Faisal I, 48
. King of Syria, 1920; King of Iraq, 1921-1933. Faisal bin Hussein bin Ali al-Hashimi was a member of the Hashemite family who promoted unity between Sunni and Shiite Muslims and pan-Arabic unity. He was proclaimed King of the Arab Kingdom of Syria on March 7, 1920, but was expelled from the country on July 24 after Syrian forces were defeated by the French in the Battle of Maysalun. Great Britain, which held a mandate in Iraq, created a monarchy and ensured that Faisal became king, taking the throne on August 23, 1921. He died in Bern, Switzerland, where he was receiving his official medical checkup. Cause of death was listed as a heart attack, but there were suspicions that the king had been poisoned. Faisal I was succeeded as King of Iraq by Ġāzī I.

United States General Dwight D. Eisenhower publicly announced the Allied armistice with Italy five days after it had been signed. Meanwhile, the O.B.S. (German General Headquarters for the Mediterranean zone) in Frascati was bombed by U.S. Army Air Forces. The Soviet Red Army captued Stalino and freed the Donets basin. Australian troops defeated a Japanese force at Saingaua Plantation, eight miles from Lae, and were approaching the Busu River, three miles east of the besieged base.

Medicine
The American Chemical Society announced the development by the St. Louis University Laboratory of "Penicillin B," 10 times more powerful than current penicillin.

Economics and finance
In a nationwide radio broadcast, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt opened the $15-billion Third War Loan drive.

Italy's surrender caused nervous selling on the New York Stock Exchange, with losses of about 2 points and sales of 797,600, the largest in more than a month.

Baseball
Relief pitcher Ace Adams of the New York Giants set a major league record for pitching appearances in a single season with 62, pitching the last 2 innings in relief of Cliff Melton in a 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies before 1,157 fans at the Polo Grounds in New York. Bill Lee pitched a 9-hit complete game victory. Buddy Kerr made his major league debut at shortstop for New York, and led off the 3rd inning with a home run in his first major league plate appearance.

Whit Wyatt pitched a 1-hitter, allowing only a single by Claude Workman with 2 out in the 1st inning, as he and the Brooklyn Dodgers shut out the Boston Braves 3-0 before 1,957 fans at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Brooklyn catcher Mickey Owen drove in 2 runs.

Stan Musial hit 2 solo home runs and George Munger pitched a 7-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Rip Sewell as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 before 4,049 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis in a game that was played in 1 hour 38 minutes.

On the undercard, former Canadian heavyweight champion Vern Escoe (28-15) of Edmonton knocked out Ron Whittle (29-20-10) at 2:41 of the 5th round of their heavyweight bout.

Harold Johnson (42-5) won a 10-round split decision over former world heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles (81-10-1) at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.

. U.S. football player. Mr. Johnson, a rookie halfback with the Kansas City Chiefs, died nine days after breaking his neck while attempting to make a block on a kickoff in a pre-season game against the Houston Oilers in Wichita, Kansas. The Chiefs retired his jersey number 33.

Baseball
Warren Spahn improved his record to 20-5 and became, at 42, the oldest 20-game winner in Major League history as he pitched the Milwaukee Braves to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Mr. Spahn tied Christy Mathewson's record with 13 seasons of 20 wins or more.

The gunmen had demanded that Jordan release Al-Fatah leader Mohammed Daoud Odeh, currently serving a life sentence for terrorist activities. Jordan and Saudi Arabia had refused to comply, and further negotiations with Kuwait had failed.

Edmonton quarterback Bruce Lemmerman rushed 2 yards for the winning touchdown with 29 seconds remaining as the Eskimos overcame a 17-6 3rd-quarter deficit to defeat the Alouettes before 22,636 fans at Clarke Stadium. Montreal quarterback Jimmy Jones rushed 5 yards for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter, and completed a 10-yard pass to Peter Dalla Riva in the 3rd quarter. Edmonton defensive back Larry Highbaugh responded to Mr. Dalla Riva's TD with a 102-yard return of the kickoff for the Eskimos' first touchdown. Dave Cutler kicked a 15-yard field goal in the 4th quarter to make the score 17-16, and Wally Buono punted for a 52-yard single with 1:22 left to give the Alouettes an 18-16 lead. The big play in the final 85-yard touchdown drive was a 44-yard pass from Mr. Lemmerman to George McGowan at the Montreal 2-yard line. Mr. McGowan and Montreal defensive back Phil Price both caught the ball--the second time in the game that the two had caught the same pass--but the rule, then as now, provided that the ball remained in the possession of the offense. Mr. McGowan caught 9 passes for 148 yards, giving him 24 receptions for 397 yards in his most recent 2 games. Montreal's John harvey led all rushers with 107 yards on just 10 carries. Mr. Lemmerman and Tom Wilkinson combined to complete 24 of 32 passes for 288 yards. Edmonton defensive back Dick Dupuis broke his arm attempting to tackle Johnny Rodgers in the 3rd quarter, and was lost to the team for the next 7 games. It was the first CFL game for Edmonton defensive back John Beaton.

Dave Pickett completed 23 of 33 passes, including touchdowns to Gerry Harris and John Konihowski, as the Huskies upset the defending Vanier Cup champion Golden Bears before 6,932 fans at Varsity Stadium in Edmonton. Saskatchewan linebacker Ron Moe recovered a fumble by Alberta running back Dalton Smarsh at the Albeta 50-yard line 2:04 remaining and the Golden Bears leading 18-15. Mr. Pickett moved the Huskies in 5 plays, handing off to Larry Remmen for a 2-yard touchdown with 1:06 remaining. Brian Adam rushed 6 yards for the first Alberta TD and quarterback Gerald Kunyk sneaked 1 yard for the other Golden Bears' TD. Jack Schwartzberg converted both and added a 16-yard field goal with 13 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter as the Golden Bears took a 17-14 halftime lead.

At the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko had a chilly exchange. U.S. President Ronald Reagan ordered the Soviet airline Aeroflot to close both its U.S. offices. The move was in retaliation for the September 1 downing of the commercial airliner Korean Air Lines Flight 007, with the loss of all 269 aboard, after it had strayed into Soviet airspace.

. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Mattingly posted a 0-1 record with an earned run average of 3.82 in 8 games with the Brooklyn Robins in 1931. He played at least 6 seasons in the minor leagues from 1927-1933, and was 17-2 with the Hartford Senators of the Class A Eastern League in 1931.

The Canadian Grain Commission released figures showing that Russia's cash shortage had cut that country's purchases of Canadian grain from an annual average of 4.5 million tonnes in recent years to 1.8 million, dropping the former number one customer to third place behind China (3.5 million tonnes) and South Korea (2 million tonnes).

Darryl Kile of the Houston Astros pitched a no-hitter, striking out 9 and walking 1, as the Astros beat the New York Mets 7-1 before 15,684 fans at the Astrodome. The Mets scored their run in the 4th inning when Jeff McKnight walked with 1 out, advanced to second on a wild pitch that Houston catcher Scott Servais thought had hit batter Joe Orsulak, and scored when Mr. Servais didn't chase what was still a live ball, and first baseman Jeff Bagwell picked it up and threw wildly to third base in an attempt to retire Mr. McKnight, who was still running on the play. Butch Huskey made his major league debut at third base for New York, striking out in all 3 plate appearances, and making 2 putouts, an assist, and an error.



Pinch hitter Kevin Roberson drove in 3 runs with a bases-loaded triple with 2 out to climax a 7-run 8th inning as the Chicago Cubs overcame a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5 before 26,553 fans at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.

Brent Gates drove in 2 runs with an infield single with 2 out to enable the Oakland Athletics to edge the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 before 50,329 fans at SkyDome in Toronto.

The Cleveland Indians scored 10 runs in the first 3 innings and withstood a 6-run 8th inning rally to defeat the Minnesota Twins 15-8 before 13,590 fans at Cleveland Stadium. . German film director. Miss Riefenstahl, a favourite of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, was known for directing the drama Das Blaue Licht (The Blue Light) (1932) and the documentaries Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will) (1935) and Olympia (1938). She was the subject of the documentary The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl (1993).
