Édouard Adolphe Casimir Joseph Mortier. Marshal of France Mortier served as a general under Napoleon Bonaparte, and was Prime Minister of France from November 1834-March 1835. He died at the age of 67 on July 28, 1835 when he was one of 18 people killed in an assassination attempt by Giuseppe Marco Fieschi against King Louis Philippe I.

Born on this date
Patty Berg. U.S. golfer. Miss Berg was perhaps the greatest female golfer in history, winning 29 amateur tournaments and 63 tournaments on the LPGA tour, including 15 major tournaments in an amateur and professional career stretching from the 1930s through the 1960s. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1951. Miss Berg died of Alzheimer's disease on September 10, 2006 at the age of 88.

Jack Palmer, 48. U.K. boxer. Mr. Palmer, born Jack Liddell, fought mainly as a middleweight, compiling a record of 23-11-3-5 in a professional career spanning 1896-1916, and held the middleweight and heavyweight titles of both Britain and South Africa on and off from 1902-1906. Mr. Palmer challenged Tommy Burns for the world heavyweight title in London on February 10, 1908, and was knocked down 9 times before being knocked out in the 4th round. Mr. Palmer fought only three times after that.

Paul Whiteman and his Concert Orchestra were at Liedenkranz Hall in New York, where they recorded Midnight Reflections.
Adventure
Two men, C. Gay and E. Lucas of Toronto, crossed the ice bridge in the Niagara Gorge from Canada to the United States. The last time anyone had tried this was on Feb. 4, 1912, when three died in the attempt.

Christabel Pankhurst, 77. U.K.-born activist. Dame Christabel, the daughter of women's suffragist leader Emmeline Pankhurst, co-founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), and was narrowly defeated as a Women's Party candidate in the 1918 British general election, the first in which women were allowed to vote. Dame Christabel spent most of her later years in the United States as an evangelist with ties to the Plymouth Brethren.

Former Cuban President Carlos Prio Socarras and eight others were indicted in New York on charges of conspiring to violate the neutrality laws of the United States by planning "military expeditions...from the U.S. against the Republic of Cuba."

The British government of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan published its annual White Paper on defense, warning that any Soviet attack on the West would bring instant British retaliation with hydrogen weapons.

Mae Marsh, 73. U.S. movie actress. Miss Marsh began her career working for Mack Sennett and D.W. Griffith, appearing in such films as The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916). Miss Marsh appeared in many movies directed by John Ford, often in uncredited bit parts. Her last role was an uncredited appearance in Mr. Ford's western Cheyenne Autumn (1964).
Portia White, 56. Canadian singer. Miss White, a native of Truro, Nova Scotia, was an operatic contralto who performed nationally and internationally from 1941-1952. She retired because of vocal and health problems, and died in Toronto after a long battle with cancer.

Nancy Greene of Rossland, British Columbia, representing Canada, won the silver medal in the women's slalom at Grenoble. France's Marielle Goitschel and Annie Famose won the gold and bronze, respectively.
