Count Fleet, ridden by Johnny Longden, won the sixth Triple Crown--and the fourth in nine years--by defeating Fairy Manhurst by 25 lengths in the 75th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in New York. Deseronto finished third in the three-horse field. Count Fleet's time for the mile and a half was 2:28 1/5, the best since the Belmont Stakes had gone to that distance in 1926.

U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy (Democrat--New York) concluded his victory speech at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, after winning the California Democratic Party U.S. Presidential primary. He then took a shortcut through the kitchen, where he was shot in the head at 12:16 A.M. by Sirhan B. Sirhan, 24, a Jordanian Arab who had been living in the Los Angeles area for 11 years. Sen. Kennedy was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where surgeons removed bullet fragments from his brain; he remained in critical condition throughout the day.

In the wake of the shooting of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, U.S. President Lyndon Johnson ordered Secret Service protection for all major party U.S. presidential and vice presidential candidates.

As the result of failure to negotiate a fishing treaty, Canada and the United States began excluding one another's commercial fishing vessels from their respective waters and the U.S.A. banned Canadian recreational fishing in American waters, while both sides were careful to avoid arrests or other confrontations.

Conway Twitty, 59. U.S. musician. Mr. Twitty, born Harold Jenkins, was a rock and roll singer in the 1950s. His single It's Only Make Believe reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 siingles chart in 1958. Mr. Twitty then turned to country music, and released 55 number-one singles from 1965-1990. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
Prairie Bayou, 3. U.S. racehorse. Prairie Bayou, the winner of the 1993 Preakness Stakes three weeks earlier, broke down in the Belmont Stakes and had to be destroyed.

The race was marred by the fatal breakdown of Preakness Stakes winner Prairie Bayou.

John LeClair scored 34 seconds into overtime to give the Canadiens the win over the Kings at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California, after the Kings had come back from a 3-0 deficit. Brian Bellows scored in the 1st period, and Gilbert Dionne and Mathieu Schneider scored early in the 2nd period for Montreal, but Los Angeles struck back to tie the game before the end of the period on goals by Luc Robitaille, Tony Granato, and Wayne Gretzky. With 12 seconds remaining in regulation time, Montreal centre Guy Carbonneau covered the puck in his goal crease, but it was erroneously ruled that the puck had been shot into him by a Los Angeles player. Otherwise, the Kings would have been awarded a penalty shot.

Sam Yorty, 88. U.S. politician. Mr. Yorty, a Democrat until 1980, sat in the California State Assembly from 1937-1941 and 1949-1950, and represented California's 14th District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1951-1953. He was Mayor of Los Angeles from 1961-1973, during which time Los Angeles grew as a major city, but Mayor Yorty's popularity gradually declined. He was defeated by Tom Bradley in 1973, and failed in later attempts to win office.
Jeanette Nolan, 86. U.S. actress. Miss Nolan appeared in numerous radio and television programs and in movies such as Macbeth (1948) and The Big Heat (1953). She was nominated for four Emmy Awards.

A strike began at the General Motors parts factory in Flint, Michigan, that quickly spread to five other assembly plants. The strike lasted seven weeks.
