Nikolai I
. Czar of Russia, 1825-1855. Nikolai I, the son of Paul I, succeeded his brother Alexander I on the throne. Czar Nikolai's reign was marked my geographical expansion and economic growth, but he centralized administration and suppressed dissent. Czar Nikolai led his country into the Crimean War in 1853, but died of pneumonia on March 2, 1855 at the age of 58 while the war was still on, and was succeeded by his son Alexander II.

Sylvester Pennoyer
. U.S. politician. Mr. Pennoyer was Governor of Oregon from 1887-1895. He was a Democrat when he was first elected, but switched to the Populist Party in the early 1890s. Mr. Pennoyer didn't get along with either U.S. President Grover Cleveland or Benjamin Harrison, and was known for his opposition to Chinese immigrants. He was Mayor of Portland (1896-1898), and died of heart disease on May 30, 1902 at the age of 70.

Chlodwig, Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, 82
. Chancellor of Germany, 1894-1900. Prince Chlodwig was one of the most prominent liberal politicians of his time. He was Minister President of Bavaria from 1866-1870, influencing the union of Bavaria with the North German Confederation. Prince Chlodwig was Governor of Alsace-Lorraine from 1885-1894, and then succeeded Leo von Caprivi as Chancellor. As Chancellor, Prince Chlodwig seldom appeared in Parliament, granting great independence to his secretaries of state. He resigned on October 17, 1900.

June Gale
. U.S. actress. Miss Gale, born June Gilmartin, entered show business as one of the Gale Sisters dancing act with her identical twin sister Jane and younger identical twins sisters Jean and Joan. The sisters appeared on Broadway in Flying High (1930) and George White's Scandals (1931). June appeared in minor roles in about three dozen movies from 1933-1940. She married musician Oscar Levant in 1939, and they remained wed until his death in 1972 despite numerous troubles. Mrs. Levant co-hosted her husband's television talk show in the late 1950s, and hosted her own talk show a few years later. She was married to screenwriter Henry Ephron from 1978-1982, and died of pneumonia on November 13, 1996 at the age of 85.

Billy Mauch
; Bobby Mauch. U.S. actors. Billy and Bobby Mauch were identical twins who were best known for starring in the movie The Prince and the Pauper (1937). Billy eventually became a sound editor for Warner Brothers, while Bobby worked as a film editor. Billy died on September 29, 2006 at the age of 85; Bobby died on October 15, 2007 at the age of 86.

Nancy Reagan. U.S. actress; U.S. First Lady, 1981-1989. Mrs. Reagan, born Anne Frances Robbins, was known as Nancy Davis when she appeared in movies such as Night Into Morning (1951) and Donovan's Brain (1953). She met Ronald Reagan shortly after his divorce from Jane Wyman in 1949, and the two were married in 1952. Mrs. Reagan aided her husband in his career as Governor of California (1967-1975) and President of the United States, and was known for leading the "Just Say No" public campaign against drug abuse. She took care of her husband after his diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease in 1994 until his death 10 years later. Mrs. Reagan died of congestive heart failure on March 6, 2016 at the age of 94.

Allan MacEachen. Canadian politician. Mr. MacEachen, a native of Inverness, Nova Scotia, was a Liberal who represented Inverness-Richmond (1953-1958, 1962-1968) and Cape Breton-Highlands (1968-1984) in the Canadian House of Commons. He was Minister of Labour (1963-1965); Minister of Finance (1980-1982); and Secretary of State for External Affairs (1974-1976, 1982-1984), and was Deputy Prime Minister (1977-1979, 1980-1984). Mr. MacEachen represented Nova Scotia in the Senate (1984-1996), serving briefly as Government Leader (1984), and then as Leader of the Opposition (1984-1991). He died in Antigonish, N.S. on September 12, 2017 at the age of 96.

Louis Armstrong, 69
. U.S. musician and singer. The legendary New Orleans-based "Satchmo" (short for "Satchelmouth") became famous as a trumpeter with his Hot Five and Hot Seven Combos in the 1920s. His popularity broadened when he added singing to his repertoire, and in the 1950s he had hits with versions of such songs as Blueberry Hill and A Kiss to Build a Dream On. Mr. Armstrong's recording of Hello Dolly! hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1964. What a Wonderful World, which failed to achieve chart success in the United States in 1967, spent four weeks at #1 on the U.K. singles chart in the spring of 1968, finally becoming popular in North America in early 1988 when it was included on the soundtrack of the movie Good Morning, Vietnam! Mr. Armstrong died of a heart attack, 29 days before his 70th birthday..

Canadian Space Agency astronaut and NASA Payload Specialist Dr. Robert Thirsk, on U.S. space shuttle Columbia mission STS-78, started to wrap up the last of his experiment operations in the Spacelab module with fellow Mission Specialists Susan Helms, Rick Linnehan, Chuck Brady and Jean-Jacques Favier. Chicago designated hitter Roosevelt Brown batted 5 for 6 with a home run, double, 3 runs, and 3 runs batted in.

Jim Thome hit 3 home runs and drove in 6 runs for the Cleveland Indians as they routed the St. Louis Cardinals 14-2 before 42,394 fans at Jacobs Field in Cleveland.
