U.S. Representative Margaret Chase Smith (Republican) of Maine was elected to the U.S. Senate by a record majority of 92,850 votes, becoming the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress and the first Republican woman to win a full Senate term.

Ezzard Charles (58-5-1) won a 10-round unanimous decision over Jimmy Bivins (66-13-1) in a heavyweight bout at Griffith Stadium in Washington. It was the fourth fight between the two, with Mr. Charles winning the last three.

Baseball
Pinch hitter Joe Schultz singled home Paul Lehner in the top of the 9th inning to break a 2-2 tie as the St. Louis Browns edged the Cleveland Indians 3-2 before 7,008 fans at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. The Browns trailed 2-0 after 7 innings, but scored 2 runs in the 8th to tie the score. Don Black started on the mound for Cleveland and pitched 2 scoreless innings, but suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while at bat in the bottom of the 2nd inning. He had fouled off a pitch into the upper deck of the stadium, and then collapsed holding onto his neck. He was able to walk to the dugout under his own power, but had lost consciousness by the time an ambulance arrived. Mr. Black was taken to St. Vincent Charity Hospital and was conscious for a time, but lapsed into a coma. His doctor noted that he was likely to make a full recovery, though he was "through with baseball for this year and possibly for good." After a few days in critical condition, Mr. Black began to recover, and his condition was reported to have improved greatly.

The Brooklyn Dodgers scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning and 4 in the 7th to overcome a 3-0 deficit and defeated the Chicago Cubs 6-4 before 22,182 fans at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.

The New York Giants scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning as they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 before 33,372 fans at the Polo Grounds in New York. Monty Kennedy pitched a 9-hit complete game victory.

Gordie Rowland returned an interception for the first touchdown and Jim Van Pelt, who had relieved injured Kenny Ploen early in the game, rushed for a TD on the second-last play of the game and added 2 converts and 2 field goals to help the Blue Bombers beat the Stampeders before 15,700 fans at Mewata Stadium. Chuck Holloway scored the Calgary touchdown on a 27-yard pass from Maury Duncan in the 2nd quarter.

With 2 1/2 inches of rain on the field and a 45-mile-per-hour wind, the Eskimos and Lions combined for 13 fumbles as the Eskimos won before just 7,000 fans in the worst weather in recent memory. The Eskimos fumbled 7 times and lost 4, while the Lions fumbled 6 times and lost 2. B.C. fullback Ed Vereb opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown rush in the 1st quarter, converted by Ted Hunt. Normie Kwong scored the only Edmonton touchdown on a 2-yard rush in the 2nd quarter. Joe Mobra converted and added a field goal and 2 singles on missed field goals, and Bill Walker punted for a single late in the game. The Eskimos produced only 173 yards in total offense, largely because of the weather.

J.B. Smith scored 2 touchdowns to help the Golden Bears defeat the Dutchmen at Kitchener Stadium. Dick Dixon and George Tait scored the other Sarnia TDs, with Gino Cappelletti adding 3 converts and 2 field goals. Bernie Custis scored 2 touchdowns for the Dutchmen, with Dave West scoring the other, all converted by Mike Norcia.

Tell Someone You Love Them was written by Billy Hinsche (the Billy of the group). His sister Annie married Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, and Billy later served for many years as a Beach Boys' sideman.

Wayne Larkin, 29
. Canadian hockey player. Mr. Larkin, a native of Winnipeg, played left wing, and was the captain of the Winnipeg Braves when they won the Memorial Cup in 1959. He concluded that season with the Winnipeg Warriors of the Western Hockey League, and played with six other teams in the WHL, International Hockey League, and American Hockey League from 1959-68. His career included four seasons with the Cleveland Barons of the AHL (1960-62, 1963-65), and he helped the Barons win the Calder Cup in 1964. Mr. Larkin played with the AHL's Buffalo Bisons, then a farm team of the New York Rangers, from 1966-68, and was invited to the Rangers' training camp in 1968. During a practice early in camp, the players were standing on the ice after a drill when Mr. Larkin collapsed with a fatal heart attack.

Archaeology
Discovery of a 1,500-year-old burial site 420 miles northwest of Lima, Peru was announced and described as the most significant of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. The site contained the remains of a high-ranking warrior-priest of the Moche people and of several of his wives and servants. The Moche were a great civilization that pre-dated the Inca. Dr. Christopher Donnan of the University of California said that the discovery ranked in importance with that of King Tutankhamen's tomb in Egypt.

Diplomacy
In a reversal of policy, the U.S. administration of President Ronald Reagan said that the United States would make an overdue payment of $44 million in dues to the United Nations, with an additional $144 million in dues to be paid October 1.

Weather
Hurricane Gilbert hit the Cayman Islands with winds of 130 miles per hour. It was the strongest recorded hurricane in the Western Hemisphere until Hurricane Wilma in 2005 (based on barometric pressure).

George Wallace, 79
. U.S. politician. Mr. Wallace was a Democrat for most of his career, and served three terms as Governor of Alabama (1963-1967, 1973-1979, 1983-1987). During his first term as Governor, he became internationally know for his defense of racial segregation, particularly in schools. Mr. Wallace ran for the Democratic party nomination for President of the United States three times, but ran his most successful presidential campaign as the nominee of the American Independent Party in 1968, winning five Southern states and 46 electoral votes. In 1972, Mr. Wallace was shot by Arthur Bremer while campaigning for the Democratic Party presidential nomination, and was permanently paralyzed from the waist down. In the late 1970s, he claimed to have become a Christian, and repudiated and apologized for his previous racial views and actions. He died after years of declining health, 19 days after his 79th birthday.

Mark Grace hit a solo home run with 1 out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Chicago Cubs an 11-10 win over the Milwaukee Brewers before 40,846 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Chicago right fielder Sammy Sosa hit his 61st and 62nd homers of the season, the latter beginning a 2-run 9th-inning rally to tie the score.

Sean Casey broke up Andy Benes' bid for a no-hitter with a single with 1 out in the 9th inning, but Mr. Benes and the Arizona Diamondbacks shut out the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 before 17,741 fans at Cinergy Field in Cincinnati.

Willie Blair allowed 3 hits in 7 1/3 innings to win the pitchers' duel over Miguel Batista as the New York Mets edged the Montreal Expos 1-0 before 15,152 fans at Olympic Stadium in Montreal. Brian McRae doubled home Edgardo Alfonzo with 2 out in the top of the 8th inning to score the game's only run.

Barry Bonds hit his 33rd home run of the season, a 3-run blow with 1 out in the bottom of the 8th inning, to give the San Francisco Giants a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies before 30,278 fans at 3Com Park at Candlestick Point in San Francisco.

Richie Sexson hit a 3-run home run with 2 out in the bottom of the 8th inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 before 43,178 fans at Jacobs Field in Cleveland. Cleveland designated hitter Cecil Fielder batted 1 for 2, singling in the 5th inning in his last major league plate appearance, in the 1,470th game of his 13-year major league career.
