. Indian religious figure. Shirdi Sai Baba was a guru who was something of a syncretist, as he preached the importance of self-realization and promoted the reading of both Hindu and Muslim scriptures, while opposing religious orthodoxy, whether it be Christian, Muslim, or Hindu. Dieter Brock completed 24 of 34 passes for 227 passes and 3 touchdowns to Keith Baker as the Tiger-Cats defeated the Roughriders before just 12,523 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium to win their first game under head coach Al Bruno, replacing Bud Riley, who had been fired a week earlier. Rookie Johnny Shepherd rushed 17 times for 143 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown--his only rushing touchdown of the regular season. Homer Jordan played most of the game at quarterback for Saskatchewan, completing 19 of 31 passes for 359 yards and touchdowns of 2 and 62 yards to Chris DeFrance and another of 3 yards to Tim Kearse. Backup quarterback Steve Clarkson relieved Mr. Jordan and saw the only game action of his 3-game CFL career, completing 1 of 4 passes for 25 yards. Mr. DeFrance caught 6 passes for 122 yards, while Mr. Baker caught 9 for 102.

Edmonton quarterback Warren Moon, who had been bothered earlier in the week by an inflamed bursa sac on his right elbow, showed no ill effects, as he set a team record for a single game that still stands with 555 yards passing as the Eskimos withstood a late Montreal rally to defeat the Concordes before 49,074 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. Mr. Moon completed 31 of 51 passes and connected with Brian Kelly for 3 touchdowns and Tom Scott and Milson Jones for a touchdown each. Mr. Jones also rushed 1 yard for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter, his first TD since being acquired in a trade with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a month earlier. Montreal quarterback Johnny Evans completed 27 of 40 passes for 353 yards and touchdown passes of 60 and 59 passes to Ron Robinson in the 2nd half. Lester Brown scored the first 2 Concorde touchdowns on rushes of 18 and 5 yards in the 2nd quarter. The Eskimos led 37-18 after Dave Cutler converted Mr. Jones' first TD with 30 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, but Mr. Evans connected with Mr. Robinson for his first touchdown on the last play of the quarter, and hit him for his second touchdown just 5:05 later. Don Sweet's convert reduced the deficit to 37-32, but Larry Highbaugh made his 5th interception of the season--and the 66th and last of his CFL career--and Mike McLeod intercepted another pass from Mr. Evans on his own 10-yard line and returned it 50 yards to help preserve the victory for the defending Grey Cup champions. Mr. Kelly finished with 13 receptions for 266 yards--a team record--and Mr. Scott caught 6 for 106 to become only the second CFL player to amass 10,000 career yards in pass receptions, after former Eskimo Tommy-Joe Coffey, who played in the CFL from 1959-1960 and 1962-1973. Former Concorde Pete Harvey played his first game as an Eskimo in place of injured Waddell Smith and caught 4 passes for 80 yards. Mr. Robinson led the Concordes with 7 receptions for 216 yards. Edmonton's Scott Stauch led all rushers with 6 carries for 70 yards.

Baseball
World Series
Baltimore Orioles 5 @ Philadelphia Phillies 4 (Baltimore led best-of-seven series 3-1)

Baltimore second baseman Rich Dauer batted 3 for 4 with a double and 3 runs batted in as the Orioles edged the Phillies before 66,947 fans at Veterans Stadium, the largest crowd to attend a World Series game since 1964. A turning point in the game came in the top of the 6th inning when John Lowenstein singled with 1 out and moved to third base on a double by Mr. Dauer. Philadelphia manager Paul Owens then ordered starting pitcher John Denny to intentionally walk pinch hitter Joe Nolan to lead the bases. As usual, the move backfired, since the next batter, pinch hitter Ken Singleton, drew an unintentional walk to force in Mr. Lowenstein with the tying run, and Mr. Singleton was followed by another pinch hitter, John Shelby, who hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Mr. Dauer, putting the Orioles ahead 4-3. Baltimore added a run in the 7th. The Phillies mounted a rally in the 9th when pinch hitter Ozzie Virgil singled in Bob Dernier with 2 out to make it 5-4, but Joe Morgan lined out to Mr. Dauer to end the game. Storm Davis started on the mound for the Orioles and gave up 6 hits and 3 runs--all earned in 5 innings, but was credited with the win. Tippy Martinez pitched 1 2/3 innings to pick up his second save of the series. Mr. Denny gave up 7 hits and 4 runs--all earned--in taking the loss.
