Born on this date
Henry A. Wallace. 33rd Vice President of the United States of America, 1941-1945. Mr. Wallace served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933-1940 before accepting the nomintation as Vice-President. He was suspected of being too liberal and friendly toward the U.S.S.R., and was replaced as Mr. Roosevelt's vice-presidential nominee in the 1944 election campaign by Harry Truman. Mr. Wallace remained in the cabinet as Secretary of Commerce from 1945-1946 until he was fired by President Harry Truman over disagreements of policy toward the Soviet Union. Mr. Wallace was the presidential candidate of the Progressive Party in 1948, but his campaign was supported by, and largely taken over by, pro-Communist forces, and Mr. Wallace finished in fourth place, attracting 2.4% of the vote and winning no electoral votes. Mr. Wallace died on November 18, 1965 at the age of 77.

Robert Gustave Troy pitched in 1 game with the Detroit Tigers, pitching 6 scoreless innings before allowing 4 runs in the 7th for an earned run average of 5.40, taking the loss against the Washington Nationals and Walter Johnson. He spent at least 5 years in the minor leagues, winning 23 games with the Adrian Lions of the Southern Michigan League. Mr. Troy was killed in combat while serving with the U.S. Army in the Argonne Forest in France during World War I.

Alexander Peacock, 72. Australian politician. Sir Alexander represented Clunes and Allendale in the Victorian Legislative Assembly (1889-1933), holding several cabinet posts and serving three terms as Premier of Victoria (1901-1902, 1914-1917, April-July 1924). He was Speaker of the Assembly from 1928 until his death; his widow Millie won a by-election for his seat.

Mel Ott hit a home run--his second of the series--with 2 out in the top of the 10th inning to give the Giants the win before 28,454 fans in the last World Series game ever played at Griffith Stadium. The Giants led 3-0 with 2 out in the bottom of the 6th inning before Heinie Manush and Joe Cronin singled and Fred Schulte hit a 3-run homer off New York starting pitcher Hal Schumacher to tie the score. Joe Kuhel and Ossie Bluege then singled before Dolf Luque relieved Mr. Schumacher and retired Luke Sewell to end the inning. Mr. Luque, who was the winning pitcher, was still on the mound in the bottom of the 10th. He retired the first two batters, but gave up a single to Mr. Cronin and a base on balls to Mr. Schulte before striking out Mr. Kuhel to end the series. General Crowder started on the mound for Washington and was relieved after 5 1/3 innings by Jack Russell, who held the Giants scoreless until giving up the series-winning home run to Mr. Ott. It was the Giants' first World Series championship since 1922.

The Argonauts trailed the Stampeders 22-3 in the 4th quarter before quarterback Alvin White passed to M.L. Harris for a touchdown and rushed 15 yards for another TD to make the game close. Chuck Ealey started at quarterback for Toronto, but left with a broken rib, while defensive end Wayne Smith and linebacker Rick Sowieta suffered season-ending knee injuries. For Mr. Ealey, the game before 26,190 fans at McMahon Stadium was the last of his 7-year CFL career. Rookie linebacker Anthony "Champ" Dickerson, who had played 2 games with the Stampeders earlier in the season, played with the Argonauts, and recovered a Calgary fumble; it was his only game in a Toronto uniform, and his third and last CFL game.

George Brett led off the game with a triple and Hal McRae followed with a single to drive him home, but Ron Guidry allowed just 5 more hits in getting the win before 56,356 fans at Yankee Stadium. Graig Nettles hit a home run in the 2nd inning to tie the score, and Roy White homered in the 5th for the eventual winning run. Mr. Guidry was relieved by Goose Gossage after Amos Otis led off the 9th with a double, and retired the Royals in order to preserve the Yankees' third straight pennant.



National League Championship Series
Philadelphia 3 @ Los Angeles 4 (10 innings) (Los Angeles won best-of-five series 3-1)

With 2 out and nobody on base in the bottom of the 10th inning before 55,124 fans at Dodger Stadium, Ron Cey drew a base on balls and advanced to second base when center fielder Garry Maddox dropped Dusty Baker's soft line drive for an error. Bill Russell then singled, and the ball went by Mr. Maddox as Mr. Cey came home with the run that gave the Dodgers their second straight pennant.

World events
The New York Times reported that U.S. intelligence experts had concluded that Soviet air defense personnel did not know that Korean Air Lines Flight 007, which was shot down over Soviet air space on September 1, 1983 with the loss of all 269 people aboard, was a commercial airliner until after it was shot down. The latest conclusion was that the Soviet plane that had shot down the airliner had been flying below and behind its target. U.S. administration officials said that the U.S.S.R. had begun to shake up its Far Eastern defense command in the wake of the September 1 incident. Soviet political and military leaders were said to be displeased by the fact that the Korean plane had flown across sensitive Soviet territory for two hours before being met by two Soviet interceptor planes. The Soviet government was also reported to be displeased by the apparent misidentification of the plane as a U.S. spy plane, and the leadership was also said to be angered by the great propaganda advantage that had been handed to the West.

Colonel Saed Musa, leader of a rebel faction within the Palestine Liberation Organization, said that the Syrian-backed rebels had gained the upper hand over PLO leader Yasser Arafat, and it appeared that the rebels were preparing to drive him from his remaining stronghold around Tripoli, Lebanon.

Economics and finance
The Filipino government delayed an increase in the minimum wage and froze prices of key commodities. The announcement came on the third day of a demonstration by thousands of office workers against the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos.

The United States Labor Department reported that the unemployment rate had declined to 9.1% in September.
