The Boston Americans scored 9 runs in the 2nd inning and added 10 in the 3rd as they beat the Philadelphia Athletics 23-12 before 2,841 fans at Columbia Park in Philadelphia. Every man in the Boston lineup had at least 1 hit and 2 runs. Parson Lewis (1-0) pitched a complete game victory, allowing 19 hits and 11 earned runs, while Pete Loos (0-1) started and took the loss in his only major league appearance, giving up 2 hits, 4 bases on balls, and 3 earned runs in 1+ inning.

Algie McBride batted 4 for 6 with 2 doubles, 4 runs, and 5 runs batted in to help the Cincinnati Reds defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 16-12 before 3,000 fans at Robison Field in St. Louis. Bill Phillips (2-0) pitched a 17-hit complete game victory, allowing 10 earned runs, while batting 2 for 4 with 3 runs and a run batted in.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission authorized the full commercialization of television broadcasting beginning July 1, 1941.

Following the coup d'état against Iraq Crown Prince 'Abd al-Ilah earlier in the year, the United Kingdom launched the Anglo-Iraqi War to restore him to power.

Defense
The American Legion's executive committee urged U.S. convoys to deliver war materials to Britain. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt urged in a letter to Office of Production Management chiefs William Knudsen and Sidney Hillman that the machine tool industry go on a 24-hour day, 7-day workweek. In a letter to House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee Chairman Robert Doughton (Democrat--North Carolina), President Roosevelt urged a "minimum" $3.5-billion tax increase to cover defense costs.

Science
Dr. Rubby Sherr and Professor Kenneth Bainbridge of Harvard University reported the transmutation of mercury into radioactive gold and platinum.

Economics and finance
U.S. Price Administrator Leon Henderson said that the government was prepared to fix prices for staple commodities, food, and clothing to prevent unwarranted price inflation.

Business
General Mills began shipping a new cereal called "Cheerioats" to six test markets; the cereal was later renamed "Cheerios."

Israeli-Syrian fighting broke out again in the demilitarized border zone between the Huleh swamp and the Sea of Galilee. 20 Syrians and 4 Israelis died as a result of Syrian attempts to keep the Israelis from drainnig the swamp.

The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees released a summary of the October 1950 conference on Wake Island between President Harry Truman and Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command General Douglas MacArthur which confirmed earlier reports that Gen. MacArthur had misled President Truman on the possibility of Chinese intervention in Korea.

Diplomacy
Japanese Emperor Hirohito paid his first visit to Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command General Matthew Ridgway in Tokyo.

Crime
A U.S. federal jury in Newark, New Jersey convicted Dr. John Jones, veterinarian and former Army meat inspector, of taking part in a conspiracy which had defrauded the government of $1 million by passing inferior-grade meat bought by the Army in 1947-1948 as top-grade beef.

Boxing
Former world heavyweight champion Joe Louis (63-2) won a 10-round unanimous decision over Omelio Agramonte (42-12) at Olympia Stadium in Detroit. It was the Brown Bomber's second decision over Mr. Agramonte within three months.

Transportation
The Canadian Pacific Ocean liner RMS Empress of Canada, the new flagship of the Canadian Pacific fleet, arrived at Montréal on her maiden voyage, eight days after departing Liverpool.

Agriculture
The government of Canada announced that it had negotiated an agreement to sell 6 million tons of wheat, barley, and flour, with a total value of about $362 million, to the People's Republic of China in one of the biggest grain sales in Canadian history. The agreement between the Canadian Wheat Board and China Resources Company, covering a period from June 1, 1961 to December 1963, was negotiated in Hong Kong from the Canadian side by Agriculture Minister Alvin Hamilton. The terms of the sale were 25% cash and the balance in 270 days. Canada guaranteed credit up to $50 million.

Baseball
Mickey Mantle hit a grand slam in the top of the 10th inning to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins before 16,669 fans at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington. It was the Yankees’ first game in Minnesota.

Canadiana
Expo 86, a world's fair with participation from 54 nations, was opened in Vancouver by Prince Charles and Princess Diana, with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The exposition, which emphasized themes of transportation and communication, ran until October 13.

Joe Ghiz was sworn in as Premier of Prince Edward Island, replacing James Lee.

Medicine
Dr. Wilbert Keon performed Canada's first artificial heart transplant at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, fittting patient Noella Leclair, 42, with a Jarvik 7- 70 until a human heart was found several days later.

Disasters
The Ukraininan city of Chernobyl was evacuated, six days after the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, nine miles away.

A U.S. federal grand jury indicted the former chairmen of the world’s two largest auction houses--Sotheby’s and Christie’s--for overcharging their customers.

Baseball
Johnny Oates resigned as manager of the Texas Rangers, with the team off to an 11-17 start to the season. Mr. Oates had been the team’s manager since 1995, and had led them to American League West Division titles in 1996, 1998, and 1999. Interim manager Jerry Narron avoided defeat in his first game when the game at The Ballpark in Arlington was called because of rain after 3 innings, with the Rangers trailing the Chicago White Sox 6-0.
