Pierre Baillot. French musician and composer. Mr. Baillot was a violinist who taught at the Conservatoire de Paris, and wrote the instructional manual L'Art du violon (1834). He was known for composing chamber music and works for violin, and died on September 15, 1842, 16 days before his 71st birthday.

Irwin Kostal. U.S. musical arranger and orchestra conductor. Mr. Kostal won Academy Awards for scoring the musical films West Side Story (1961) and The Sound of Music (1965). He died on November 23, 1994 at the age of 83.

Heinrich Mark. Prime Minister-in-Exile of Estonia, 1971-1990; Prime Minister of Estonia in duties of the President, 1990-1992. After the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940, Mr. Mark escaped to Finland before settling in Sweden. Estonian independence was restored in 1991, making Mr. Mark the country's last head of state-in-exile. He died on August 2, 2004 at the age of 92.

Leo Hafford, 28. U.S. baseball pitcher and football coach. Mr. Hafford played with the Cincinnati Reds (1906), posting a 1-1 record with an earned run average of 0.95 in 3 games. He played at least 5 seasons in the minor leagues (1907-1911). Mr. Hafford became football coach at the University of Connecticut in 1911, but died of typhoid fever three weeks later and two weeks after his 28th birthday, after a season-opening loss. He was still credited as head coach for the whole season, with the Aggies finishing 0-5.

The St. Louis Browns erupted for 5 runs in the top of the 11th inning as they beat the Detroit Tigers 11-6 before 8,000 fans at Navin Field in Detroit. Elam Vangilder (11-12) allowed 1 run--earned--in 8 innings of relief to get the win over Red Oldham (11-14), who allowed 18 hits and 10 earned runs in a complete game.

Goldie Rapp singled home Butch Henline with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the score, and Frank Parkinson scored when second baseman Hank Schreiber made an error on a ground ball by Russ Wrightstone, giving the Philadelphia Phillies a 10-9 win over the New York Giants in the first game of a doubleheader at National League Park in Philadelphia. Red Causey (4-4) and Claude Jonnard combined to pitch an 8-hitter for the Giants as they won the second game 3-0. Jimmy Ring (10-19) pitched an 8-hit complete game, allowing 2 earned runs. New York second baseman Bud Heine batted 0 for 2 in the second game, making 1 putout and 2 assists in his only major league game.

39 more people were executed in the Nazi-created Protectorate of Bohemia-Moravia for "preparation for treason," bringing the total to 123 in three days since the appointment of Reinhard Heydrich as Reich Protector there.

U.S. Navy Secretary Frank Knox said that the United States "must provide both the major power and the dominant leadership" to police the world together with the United Kingdom after the forces of German Fuehrer Adolf Hitler were defeated.

U.S. representative Averell Harriman and U.K. representative Lord Beaverbrook, at the end of their three day conference in Moscow with U.S.S.R. dictator Josef Stalin, stated that the Soviet Union would receive all war materials needed from America and Britain.
