Alessandro Rolla, 84. Italian musician and composer. Mr. Rolla was a violist and violinist who was an innovator in technique on both instruments, which he played as leader of the Ducale Orchestra in Parma (1782-1802) and leader and orchestra director of the La Scala Orchestra in Milan (1802-1833). He wrote 12 symphonies, 20 violin concertos, 15 viola concertos, eight ballets, and numerous chamber works. Mr. Rolla is known today mainly as the teacher of legendary violinist Niccolò Paganini.

The Detroit Tigers pounded rookie pitcher Jack Bracken (3-7) for 24 hits as they routed the Cleveland Blues 21-0 before 5,000 fans at Bennett Park in Detroit. The game was stopped after 7½ innings in order to allow the Blues to catch a train. Sport McAllister led the Detroit attack with a home run, 2 doubles, 2 runs, and 7 runs batted in. Ed Siever (17-13) pitched a 6-hit shutout.

The Chicago White Sox scored a run in the bottom of the 8th inning to break a 4-4 tie as they edged the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader before 18,000 fans at South Side Park in Chicago. Davy Jones batted 1 for 5 with a home run and 2 runs batted in as Milwaukee's leadoff hitter, making 2 putouts in left field in his first major league game. Lou Gertenrich made his major league debut as Milwaukee's right fielder, batting 1 for 2 with a run, with no fielding chances. The White Sox scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning of the second game as they overcame a 4-2 deficit to win 9-4 and complete the sweep. Chicago catcher Billy Sullivan batted 4 for 4 with a triple, run, and run batted in in the second game. Nixey Callahan (14-7) and Wiley Piatt (8-13) were the respective winning pitchers, with Bert Husting (9-11) and Bill Reidy the respective losers.

Jesse Tannehill (16-9) pitched a 3-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Noodles Hahn (19-18), who pitched a 5-hitter, as the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 before 1,500 fans at League Park in Cincinnati. The Pirates scored twice in the 1st inning. Pittsburgh third baseman Jud Smith batted 0 for 4, making 1 putout and 1 assist in the 103rd and last game of his 4-year major league career.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored 10 runs in the last 3 innings as they overcame a 6-1 deficit to defeat the Chicago Orphans 13-6 before 6,800 fans at West Side Park in Chicago. Every man in the St. Louis lineup had at least one hit. Jack Harper (22-11) pitched a 9-hit complete game to win over Tom Hughes (10-18), who allowed 15 hits and 12 earned runs.

Luther Terry. U.S. physician. Dr. Terry was Surgeon General of the United States from 1961-1965. He was best known for Smoking and Health: Report of the Advisory Committee to the Surgeon General of the United States, released on January 11, 1964, which concluded that lung cancer and chronic bronchitis were causally related to cigarette smoking. Dr. Terry died on March 29, 1985 at the age of 73.

Baseball
Jimmy McAleer announced his resignation as manager of the Washington Nationals, effective the end of the season. The Nationals were in seventh place in the American League.

Jim Levey led off the 9th inning with a single and eventually scored from third base when Jack Burns grounded into a force play and second base and beat the throw to first on an attempted double play, breaking a 4-4 tie as the St. Louis Browns edged the Washington Nationals 5-4 before 1,100 fans at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Sam Gray (10-22) pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief of Bob Cooney to get the win over Lloyd Brown (14-13), who allowed 9 hits and only 1 earned run in a complete game. A pair of Washington errors contributed to 4 unearned St. Louis runs.

Tom Oliver singled home Danny MacFayden with the bases loaded and 2 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox before 2,000 fans at Fenway Park in Boston. Mr. MacFayden (15-12) pitched a 10-hit complete game to outduel Ted Lyons (3-5), who allowed 9 hits, but made a throwing error on a ground ball by Jack Rothrock in the 9th inning, allowing Mr. MacFayden, who had singled to lead off the inning, to reach third base.

U.K. Supply Minister Lord Beaverbrook wired all tank factories urging them to speed up output the following week, when every tank produced in Britain would be sent directly to the Russian frontlines. He hit .296 with 50 homers in 732 games in 8 seasons in the minor leagues (1939-1942, 1951-1954), and hit at least 7 home runs in at least 120 games in 7 seasons in the Mexican League (1945-1948, 1952-1956). Mr. Ortiz had a 35-game hitting streak in 1948, which stood as the Mexican League record until 2000. He died in Miami.

Jaafar Nimeiry, who had been President of Sudan since taking power in a coup in 1969, was elected President in a referendum, receiving the approval of 98.55% of voters.

Mr. Etheridge hit .277 with 12 homers and 46 RBIs in 114 games for the Tulsa Oilers of the AAA American Association.

John Boccabella reached third base on an error by second baseman Denny Doyle to lead off the 8th inning and Bobby Wine followed with a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Clyde Mashore with the game's only run as the Montreal Expos edged the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 before 7,734 fans at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Ernie McAnally (10-10) pitched a 4-hitter, striking out 9 batters, to win the pitchers' duel over Woodie Fryman (10-7), who allowed 6 hits in 8 innings. There were no bases on balls in the game, which was played in 1 hour 50 minutes.

The Chicago Cubs swept a doubleheader from the New York Mets 6-2 and 3-2 before 21,302 fans at Shea Stadium in New York. Hank Aaron hit his 44th home run of the season to help the Atlanta Braves to a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros before 6,513 fans at the Astrodome, with Phil Niekro (14-12) pitching a 4-hit complete game victory over Jack Billingham (8-15). In what may stand as the shortest major league career on record, Larry Yount was announced as the pitcher for the Astros to start the top of the 9th inning. He popped a ligament in his elbow while warming up on the mound, and was removed from the game before facing a batter, and never appeared in the major leagues again. His brother Robin began his Hall of Fame career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1974.

With 2 out and nobody on base in the top of the 9th inning, Harmon Killebrew drew a base on balls and Steve Braun followed with a triple to score Mr. Killebrew with the game's only run as the Minnesota Twins edged the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 before 3,960 fans at County Stadium in Milwaukee. He was with the Pirates when they won the 1960 World Series. In his later years, Mr. Burgess played primarily as a pinch hitter, and in his final season, he didn't play in the field at all. Mr. Burgess had 145 pinch hits, which was the major league career record until it was broken by Manny Mota in 1979.

Warner Troyer, 59. Canadian journalist. Mr. Troyer, a native of Cochrane, Ontario, worked at various radio stations in western Canada, and was a newscaster with CHED when the Edmonton station began broadcasting in 1954. Mr. Troyer appeared on the CBC television news program This Hour has Seven Days in the mid-1960s, and was one of the original co-hosts of the CBC television news program The Fifth Estate (1975-1976). He devoted his later years to environmental causes, and wrote books such as No Safe Place (1977). Mr. Troyer died of throat cancer.

The Calgary defense knocked Toronto quarterback Matt Dunigan with an injury, and Calgary linebacker Dan Wicklum sent Toronto running back/receiver Rocket Ismail to hospital with a concussion as the Stampeders beat the Argonauts before 26,122 fans at McMahon Stadium.

Pinch hitter Mike Fitzgerald drew a base on balls with the bases loaded and 2 out in the top of the 10th inning to force home Tom Foley with the winning run as the Montreal Expos edged the Chicago Cubs 6-5 before 25,601 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Chico Walker hit 2 home runs for Chicago, while Larry Walker homered for Montreal.

Sid Bream's grand slam was the big blow of a 5-run 1st inning as the Atlanta Braves routed the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-1 before 45,541 fans at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Steve Avery (16-8) pitched a 4-hit complete game and also singled in a run.

Rookie Ray Lankford hit for the cycle to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-2 win over the New York Mets before 26,379 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis. Winning pitcher Rheal Cormier (3-3) pitched a 9-hit complete game.

Jose Canseco hit 2 home runs, scored 3 runs, and drove in 6 as the Oakland Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-5 before 50,315 fans at SkyDome in Toronto.

Luis Rivera drew a base on balls with the bases loaded and 2 out in the top of the 8th inning to force Mike Greenwell home with the winning run as the Boston Red Sox edged the New York Yankees 5-4 before 22,303 fans at Yankee Stadium. Boston second baseman Jody Reed batted 4 for 5 with a home run, double, run, and 3 runs batted in.

Alvin Davis batted 4 for 4 with a home run, double, run, and 4 runs batted in to help the Seattle Mariners defeat the Kansas City Royals 14-7 before 20,019 fans at Royals Stadium. Pat Lennon made his major league debut with the Mariners in the 8th inning when he pinch hit for Mr. Davis, doubling in a run and coming around to score. Chris Howard made his major league debut in the 6th when he replaced Dave Valle as the Mariners' catcher; he doubled in his first major league plate appearance in the 8th and scored. Warren Cromartie came to bat as a pinch hitter for Kansas City in the 9th and grounded into a game-ending double play; for Mr. Cromartie, it was the 1,107th and last game of his 10-year major league career.

Kenny Brack won the American Memorial at EuroSpeedway Lausitz in Klettwitz, Germany. Max Papis finished second and Patrick Carpentier third in the race, which was marred by a crash involving Alex Zanardi, resulting in the loss of his legs. He was leading the race on lap 142 of 154 when he pitted, and then spun coming onto the track. He was hit by Alex Tagliani, who moved just enough to avoid hitting Mr. Zanardi in a way that would have killed him.
