World events
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat announced that he had decided to “terminate the mission of the Soviet military advisers and experts” in his country, and ordered their immediate withdrawal. Addressing the central committee of the Arab Socialist Union, Mr. Sadat said that he had ordered the ouster because the U.S.S.R. had failed to give him advanced arms to use against Israel. A Soviet announcement the next day said the withdrawal was by mutual agreement. The number of Soviet military advisers in Egypt was estimated to be from 15,000-20,000, maybe even as many as 30,000.

Politics and government
Spanish dictator Francisco Franco designated Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, 69, as his choice to succeed him as President if and when he decided to relinquish power.
