Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen
. Queen consort of the United Kingdom and Hanover, 1830-1837. Adelaide, the daughter of George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, married the future King William IV in 1818, and became queen consort when he acceded to the throne upon the death of his elder brother George IV. She had no children who survived past infancy, and when King William died in 1837, he was succeeded on the throne by his niece Victoria. Adelaide lived in England as a dowager queen, with her health gradually declining until her death on December 2, 1849 at the age of 57. The city of Adelaide, Australia is named in her honour.

Ben Hogan
. U.S. golfer. One of the greatest golfers in history, Mr. Hogan won 64 professional tournaments and 9 major championships, Mr. Hogan was seriously injured--almost fatally--in a car accident in 1949, but resumed play in 1950, and had some of his greatest moments after that. In 1953 he won 5 of the 6 tournaments he played in, including the Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open. He didn't play in the PGA championship in 1953 because it overlapped with the British Open, in which American players seldom played in those days. Mr. Hogan was the subject of the biographical movie Follow the Sun (1951), starring Glenn Ford.

. French composer. Mr. Massenet was best known for his operas, including Manon (1884); Werther (1892); and Thaïs (1894/1898). The Méditation from Thaïs is his most famous composition.

Baseball
The Brooklyn Dodgers swept a doubleheader from the New York Giants 18-9 and 5-4 at the Polo Grounds in New York. Sloppy Thurston was the winning pitcher in the first game despite giving up 6 home runs, including homers by Bill Terry, Mel Ott, and Freddie Lindstrom on consecutive pitches in the 4th inning. The Dodgers amassed 24 hits, including 4 by Mr. Thurston. The Dodgers scored all their runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. Hack Wilson hit a home run, triple, and single for the Dodgers, and Tony Cuccinello and Zack Taylor added homers. The Dodgers hit 3 more home runs in the second game, while Mr. Ott hit his 35th of the season for the Giants.

Red Ruffing struck out 12 batters, allowed just 3 hits, and hit a home run for the game's only run as the New York Yankees edged the Washington Nationals 1-0 in 10 innings.

Farrell Funston scored 3 touchdowns as the Blue Bombers, who hadn't lost a road game since 1959, defeated the Stampeders before 14,000 fans at McMahon Stadium. Mr. Funston scored 2 touchdowns on passes from quarterback Kenny Ploen, and in a play oddly prophetic of what was to occur in the playoffs, recovered a fumble by Calgary defensive back Harvey Wylie for his other touchdown. Mr. Ploen also threw a touchdown pass to Ernit Pitts. Leo Lewis rushed 83 yards for a Winnipeg touchdown, and defensive back Dick Thornton returned an interception for another Blue Bomber touchdown. Jim Dillard rushed 14 yards for one Calgary touchdown and score another on a 65-yard pass from quarterback Jerry Keeling. Mr. Keeling scored a the other Stampeder touchdown on a 4-yard rush.

. U.S. film director. Mr. Walters directed such movies as Easter Parade (1948); Summer Stock (1950); The Belle of New York (1952); Lili (1953); Dangerous When Wet (1953); Torch Song (1953); The Tender Trap (1955); High Society (1956); and Walk, Don't Run (1966).

Joe E. Ross, 68. U.S. comedian and actor. Born Joseph Roszawikz, Mr. Ross was a burlesque comedian who was known for saying, "Ooh! Ooh!" He was a supporting actor in the television comedy series You'll Never Get Rich (later known as The Phil Silvers Show) (1955-1959) and co-starred in the comedy series Car 54, Where Are You? (1961-1963) and It's About Time (1966-1967).

As U.S. President Ronald Reagan was travelling in his helicopter and approaching his ranch in Santa Barbara, California to begin a vacation, a small private plane flew within 200 feet of the helicopter. Mr. Reagan’s pilot took evasive action, and security guards in a second helicopter pursued the plane, which landed at Orange County Airport. The pilot, U.S. Army Private Ralph Myers, was questioned and then held when it was learned that he was absent without leave from a base in Washington state.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega concluded two days of talks with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in Havana.

With the score tied 17-17 early in the 3rd quarter, Toronto punter Hank Ilesic fumbled a high snap, and B.C. defensive back Keith Gooch returned the ball 3 yards for a touchdown to put the Lions ahead to stay before 37,843 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. Ray Crouse rushed 14 times for 57 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Lions, and caught 7 passes for 41 yards. Toronto quarterback Gilbert Renfroe completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Ken Joiner to open the scoring in the 1st quarter and rushed 1 yard for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter.

The United Nations Security Council voted 12-0 with 3 abstentions to authorize the use of military force to insure that humanitarian aid got to Bosnia-Herzegovina. In a second resolution, the Security Council unanimously condemned the Serbian policy of ethnic cleansing, which involved forced evacuations.

Tom Burgess completed 17 of 26 passes for 230 yards and 2 touchdowns to James Ellingson and another to Jock Climie as the Rough Riders beat the Stampeders in front of a Lansdowne Park crowd of 24,752. Backup quarterback Terrence Jones rushed 9 yards for the Ottawa touchdown, while Calgary quarterback Doug Flutie rushed 2 yards for the Stampeders’ only touchdown with 4:19 remaining in the game.

Matt Dunigan threw touchdown passes to Larry Willis and Rob Crifo in the 3rd quarter and Bobby Evans returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown in the 1st quarter as the Blue Bombers defeated the defending Grey Cup champion Argonauts before 27,714 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. John Congemi, who relieved starter Rickey Foggie at quarterback for the Argonauts, rushed 1 yard for the first Toronto touchdown in the 4th quarter and completed a pass to Paul Masotti for a 2-point convert on the second Toronto touchdown, scored by defensive back Don Wilson on a 68-yard return of a blocked field goal with 3:06 remaining in the game.

Dave Ridgway’s sixth field goal of the game, a 20-yard kick with 7 seconds remaining in the 2nd half of overtime gave the Roughriders their win over the Lions before 25,653 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. Mr. Ridgway had tied the game with a 43-yard field goal on the last play of regulation time, 1 minute and 26 seconds after the Lions had taken the lead on a 10-yard touchdown rush by Jon Volpe, converted by Lui Passaglia. The Roughriders dominated the statistical battle, tying a CFL record for first downs in a game with 44 (set by the Edmonton Eskimos in a 60-minute game on September 11, 1983), amassing 707 yards in net offense, and keeping the ball for 45 minutes and 22 seconds of the game’s 70 minutes. Saskatchewan quarterback Kent Austin completed 38 of 59 passes for 536 yards and a touchdown to Ray Elgaard. Mr. Austin and Lucius Floyd also rushed for touchdowns. Saskatchewan running back Milson Jones rushed 19 times for 121 yards and caught 9 passes for 73. Mr. Volpe rushed 16 times for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Lions, and also caught a touchdown pass from starting quarterback Tony Kimbrough. Lorne King carried once for the Lions, and went 57 yards for a touchdown. Backup quarterback Mike Johnson completed a 76-yard touchdown pass to Darren Flutie, and defensive back Ron Francis returned a fumble 85 yards for another B.C. touchdown. Each team fumbled 4 times, and lost all 4.
