Religion
More than 300 clergy and laymen at the 21st General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada, meeting in Kingston, Ontario, voted unanimously to adopt a new Book of Common Prayer. The revision had been approved unanimously at the 1959 General Synod, but the move couldn't take effect until there was unanimous approval by two consecutive general synods. The revision brought some language and ideas up to date, reorganized the layout to make the book easier to use for worshippers, and restored some liturgy from versions dating from the 16th century. Two old anthems for use at communion were revived from earlier versions in the new book, and the revised funeral service included, for the first time, a place for reference to the deceased by name.

Politics and government
The Republican National Convention, meeting in Miami Beach, Florida, nominated Vice-President Spiro Agnew as the party’s 1972 candidate for Vice President of the United States. The vote was 1,345-1, with the sole dissenting vote going to NBC television commentator David Brinkley, who wasn’t actually a candidate. In his acceptance speech, President Richard Nixon, who had been renominated the previous night, stated that the choice presented to voters was the most clear-cut of any election in the 20th century, and urged Democrats unhappy with the nomination of U.S. Senator George McGovern as their presidential nominee to “come home” to “American principles.” Mr. Nixon defended his Vietnam war policy, stating that his administration had made “great progress” toward ending the war, but would “never stain the honour of America” by “imposing a Communist government on our allies.” Delegates continued their mindless chanting of “four more years.”

Protest
More than 1,129 demonstrators were arrested outside Convention Hall in Miami Beach for trying to bar entry to delegates at the Republican National Convention. Police used pepper gas to subdue the protesters.
