Dawit I. Emperor of Ethiopia, 1382-1413. Dawit I succeeded his elder brother Newaya Maryam on the throne. He campaigned against Muslims in Egypt and on his eastern border, and had diplomatic contact with Europe. Dawit I died after being kicked in the head by his horse, and was succeeded by his son Tewodros I.

Duc Duc, 31. Emperor of Vietnam, 1883. Duc Duc was named Emperor by three regents on July 20, 1883, but was deposed by the same regents just three days later. Reports differ as to whether he was executed or left to die in captivity.

Roland Garros. French aviator. Mr. Garros set a world altitude record in 1911 of 18,410 feet, and two years later made the first nonstop flight across the Mediterranean Sea. An error by New York first baseman Joe Pepitone led to the winning run as the Yankees suffered the first World Series sweep in their history. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Jim Gilliam led off for the Dodgers with a ground ball to New York third baseman Clete Boyer, who threw to Mr. Pepitone. The first baseman lost sight of the ball in the background of white shirts worn by Los Angeles fans, and the ball hit his arm and rolled into right field, allowing Mr. Gilliam to go all the way to third base. The next batter, Willie Davis, hit a sacrifice fly to Mickey Mantle in center field, driving in Mr. Gilliam with the go-ahead run. The Yankees managed to put runners on first and second bases with 2 out in the 9th against Los Angeles ace Sandy Koufax, but Hector Lopez grounded to shortstop Maury Wills, who threw to first baseman Bill Skowron, an ex-Yankee, to end the series. Losing pitcher Whitey Ford gave up just 2 hits, both to Frank Howard. Mr. Howard's first hit was a home run in the bottom of the 5th inning that travelled 420 feet into the eighth row of the second tier of the grandstand, as 55,912 fans saw the first fair ball ever hit into that spot at Dodger Stadium. Mr. Mantle tied the score on a homer with 1 out in the 7th. Mr. Koufax, who pitched 2 complete game victories, was named the series' Most Valuable Player. Veteran Yankees' broadcaster Mel Allen, who had been suffering from laryngitis, lost his voice in the late innings while calling the game on television; Dodgers' broadcaster Vin Scully, who had been sharing the duties with Mr. Allen on television, filled in for him.

Sidney Blackmer, 78. U.S. actor. Mr. Blackmer was a stage and screen actor for more than 50 years. He won a Tony Award in 1950 for his performance in Come Back, Little Sheba, and portrayed Theodore Roosevelt in more than a dozen films, including Teddy, the Rough Rider (1940). Perhaps Mr. Blackmer's most memorable performance--to this blogger, at least--was that of fictitious U.S. President William Lyon Selby in an episode of The Outer Limits titled The Hundred Days of the Dragon (1963).

Dennis Price, 58. U.K. actor. Mr. Price was best known for his co-starring role in the film Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and for his portrayal of Jeeves in television adaptations of P.G. Wodehouse's stories.

François Cevert, 29. French auto racing driver. Mr. Cevert, born Albert François Cevert Goldenberg, was a Formula One driver who won the 1971 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, New York. He had six second-place finishes in 1973, three of them behind teammate Jackie Stewart. Mr. Cevert was killed the day before the U.S. Grand Prix in a qualifying session when he crashed in a part of the Watkins Glen track known as the "Esses." Just before the session, he and Mr. Stewart engaged in a debate over how to handle that part of the track, and Mr. Cevert turned out to be wrong.

Allied forces in Italy captured Aversa and Maddaloni north of Naples and crossed the Calore River. A U.S. Navy task force attacked Japanese-held Wake Island at dawn.

Billy Martin singled to drive in Hank Bauer from second base with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning with the winning run as the Yankees became the first--and so far, only--team to win 5 straight World Series, beating the record they had shared with the Yankees of 1936-1939. The Yankees, playing before 62,370 fans at Yankee Stadium, seemed in control of the game. They led 3-1 after 8 innings, with Allie Reynolds relieving starting pitcher Whitey Ford after 7 innings. However, with 1 out in the top of the 9th, Duke Snider drew a base on balls and Carl Furillo hit a home run to tie the score. Mr. Bauer singled off Brooklyn relief pitcher Clem Labine to begin the bottom of the 9th. After Yogi Berra lined out to Mr. Furillo in right field, Mickey Mantle beat out an infield single, with Mr. Bauer stopping at second, and Mr. Martin singled to end the series. Carl Erskine started on the mound for the Dodgers and gave up 3 runs in 4 innings. Mr. Labine, the third Dodger pitcher of the day, pitched 2 1/3 innings in taking the loss. Mr. Reynolds was credited with the win. It was the fifth World Series championship for Casey Stengel in his fifth season managing the Yankees, but it was the end of the line for Charlie Dressen as manager of the Dodgers. He was let go when owner Walter O'Malley refused to accede to his demand for a two-year contract, and was replaced by Walter Alston.

Tom LaSorda was the winning pitcher for the Royals as they beat the Blues before 5,413 fans at Delorimier Stadium. Bob Wiesler started on the mound for the Blues and took the loss. Bob Cerv of Kansas City hit the game's only home run.

The Oakland Chiefs, who had been operated by a fan-owned corporation since 1950, declared a deficit of $30,000, and team president Paul Thomas said it was likely that the team would not operate in 1954.

The United Nations General Assembly rejected the credentials of the South African delegation, but General Assembly President Leopoldo Benites of Ecuador ruled that the delegation could still speak before the assembly and otherwise participate in UN work. When South African Foreign minister Hilgard Muller took the rostrum shortly after the rejection, representatives of 100 of the 135 member nations walked out to express their disapproval of South African policies. South African Prime Minister John Vorster called the decision a "comedy," but said his country would remain in the UN.

Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, on a 10-day tour of China, and Chinese Premier Chou En-lai announced a trade agreement which placed emphasis on long-term commercial arrangements such as the recent deal to sell Canadian wheat to China for $1 billion. Mr. Trudeau also announced agreements on exchange of scientific, medical, and cultural delegations as well as establishment of consular relations.

The European Patent Convention was signed in Munich.

Mr. Quayle had been accused of being too young and inexperienced to be vice-president, but he said that he was as experienced as John F. Kennedy had been when he had been elected president in 1960. Senator Bentsen replied, "I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."



Vadim Medvedev, newly-appointed Soviet cabinet minister for ideology and propaganda, gave a speech in which he rejected the idea of a struggle against the West. He said that Communism was facing crises around the world, and called for development of a new concept of socialism that would borrow ideas from other socialist countries and even from capitalist countries.

The Brazilian Constitution was ratified by the Constituent Assembly.

Josh Ashton, 44. U.S. football player. Mr. Ashton was a running back at the University of Tulsa who was drafted in the 9th round by the New England Patriots in 1971. He went to the Canadian Football League instead, joining the British Columbia Lions. Mr. Ashton played the first 6 games of the season, rushing 25 times for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns, catching 9 passes for 112 yards, and returning 10 kickoffs for 291 yards. He suddenly announced that he no longer wanted to play football, and returned to the United States. Having presumably been released by the Lions, Mr. Ashton joined the Patriots in 1972, and played 38 games with New England through 1974 and 2 games with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1975, rushing 257 times for 994 yards and 3 touchdowns, catching 33 passes for 320 yards and 1 touchdown, and returning 15 kickoffs for 309 yards. His best season was 1972, when he scored all his touchdowns, rushing 128 times for 546 yards, catching 22 passes for 207 yards, and amassing all his kickoff returns, for 1,062 combined yards.

Red Crowder, 23. U.S. baseball pitcher. Joseph Dean Crowder played in the New York Yankees' organization (1949-1953), compiling a 36-24 record with an earned run average of 3.26 in 212 games. He was 10-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 38 games with the Birmingham Barons of the AA Southern Association in 1953. Mr. Crowder died in Wyandotte, Oklahoma.

McGill's Enal Bosoki was awarded a touchdown when he intercepted a pass on his own 35-yard line and was tackled on the OAC 25-yard line by Roney McDonald, who had come onto the field from the sideline during the play to make the tackle.

The United States Senate Select Committee on Campaign Activities, which was investigating the June 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. and the subsequent cover-up, heard testimony from Donald Segretti, who had worked on the campaign to re-relect President Richard Nixon in 1972. Mr. Segretti had been hired by Mr. Nixon's appointments secretary Dwight Chapin to play pranks on Democratic party politicians, but he testified that he had no reason to believe that Mr. Nixon had been informed about his work. Mr. Segretti gave a lengthy rundown of his activities, including an admission that he had sent out a fake letter on Senator Edmund Muskie's stationery accusing fellow Democratic Senators Hubert Humphrey and Henry Jackson of sexual misconduct.

Terrorism
U.S. President Richard Nixon appealed to Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky to reconsider his decision of September 29 to cave in to the demands of armed Arab guerrillas to suspend group transit of Israeli-bound Soviet Jews through Austria and to close down the Schoenau Castle transit facility. The two guerrillas had seized three Soviet Jews and an Austrian customs official on September 28 in a raid on a train bound from Moscow to Vienna carrying 40 Jewish emigrants. Mr. Nixon said, "We simply cannot have governments--small or large--give in to international blackmail by terrorist groups."

Mithileshwar Singh, an Indian citizen with permanent alien-resident status in the United States and a professor at Beirut University, was freed by his captors in Beirut 19 months after being kidnapped, along with three American professors, by gunmen who had identified themselves as Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine. The terrorists had offered to release one hostage in return for U.S. support for the Palestinians. Mr. Singh said his three American colleagues were "OK." The U.S. administration of President Ronald Reagan denied that any deal had been made to free any hostages.

Cedric Minter rushed 5 yards for the final Toronto TD with 12 seconds left in the game. Denny Ferdinand rushed 1 yard for the Concordes' only touchdown just 3:22 into the game. Mr. Greer, the CFL's leading receiver, caught 10 passes for 121 yards.

A questionable pass interference call against defensive back Ron Hopkins led to a 6-yard touchdown pass from Warren Moon to Brian Kelly in the 4th quarter, allowing the Eskimos to escape with a win over the Stampeders before 52,255 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. The penalty, while Mr. Hopkins was attempting to defend against Mr. Kelly, was called by official Art McAvoy and amounted to a 38-yard gain. Calgary quarterback Bernard Quarles threw touchdown passes to Vic Wallace and Ray Crouse to give the Stampeders a 14-1 lead just 3:03 into the game. Mr. Moon completed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Waddell Smith later in the quarter, and Dave Cutler kicked 3 field goals to offset another TD pass from Mr. Quarles to Mr. Wallace, leaving the Eskimos behind 21-17 at halftime. Mr. Moon completed a 17-yard pass to Milson Jones for a touchdown--the first for Mr. Jones since coming to the Eskimos in a trade with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers two weeks earlier--to put the Eskimos ahead in the 3rd quarter, but Mr. Quarles connected with Willie Armstead for a 50-yard TD later in the quarter. On the game's final play, Mr. Cutler attempted a 36-yard field goal, but it was wide, and Calgary defensive back Harry Kruger punted it out of the end zone to the Calgary 35-yard line. Edmonton punter Paul Hickie fielded the ball but made a poor punt to Calgary linebacker Danny Bass at the 15. He then punted to the Calgary 40, where Mr. Hickie caught the ball and lateralled to Tom Scott, who was takcled by Randy Trautman. The Eskimos were trying for more points because the teams were tied 46-46 in total points in games between the teams, and the Eskimos wanted at least 1 more point in case the teams finished tied for a playoff spot at the end of the season, and the tie needed t be broken--which turned out to be the case. Mr. Moon completed 28 of 47 passes for 438 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 68 yards, while Mr. Quarles was 14 for 23 for 286 yards and 4 touchdowns, and rushed 5 times for 51 yards. Mr. Quarles completed just 4 of 9 passes in the 2nd half, as the Eskimos used as many as 7 defensive backs on some plays. Edmonton running back Neil Lumsden rushed twice for 7 yards and caught 3 passes for 31, but suffered a season-ending knee injury. Rookie Danny Barrett, who had spent the entire season on the Stampeders' injured list, dressed as Calgary's third-string quarterback, but saw no action. It was his first regular season CFL game.

He held numerous other offices in a political career spanning almost 50 years. Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono died of a sudden internal bleeding while on a visit to Washington, D.C.

Frederick Hauck, Commander of U.S. space shuttle Discovery mission STS-26, led a tribute by the crew to the astronauts who had been killed in the space shuttle Challenger explosion on January 28, 1986.

David Kay, chief U.S. government weapons inspector in Iraq, testified to Congress that his team had yet to find conclusive evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, though he said that deposed President Saddam Hussein's regime had sought to develop the weapons. Crime

James and Crockett were hanged the day after being convicted of violating a 1584 act of Parliament prohibiting Roman Catholic priests from coming into the realm of England. The two, with three other priests, had been ordained abroad and had been captured aboard ship upon re-entry into England on April 19, 1586, and then had spent more than two years imprisoned without trial. They were beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929.

The game before 19,266 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium marked the first game between the Blue Bombers and Tiger-Cats since the September 21 trade that sent quarterback Dieter Brock from Winnipeg to Hamilton and quarterback Tom Clements from Hamilton to Winnipeg. Mr. Clements led the Blue Bombers to victory, but suffered a broken collarbone that put him on the injured list for the rest of the regular season. He was injured while completing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Boyd with 11 seconds remaining in the 1st half, just 45 seconds after Mr. Brock had rushed 2 yards for a Hamilton touchdown. Rookie Nickie Hall played the 2nd half for Winnipeg and threw a 27-yard TD pass to James Murphy and handed off to Willard Reaves for a 10-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter. Mr. Brock completed a 29-yard pass to Scott Collie for the other Hamilton touchdown early in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Clements completed 12 of 19 passes for 172 yards, while Mr. Hall was 4 for 13 for 71 yards. Mr. Brock wsa 19 for 33 for 189 yards, while backup Jeff Tedord was 3 for 8 for 24 yards. Mr. Reaves led all rushers with 23 carries for 130 yards. It was the last game for Bud Riley as head coach of the Tiger-Cats; he was fired several days later and replaced by Al Bruno.

The Roughriders blew a 22-0 2nd-quarter lead and lost to the Rough Riders before 24,563 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Homer Jordan, making his first start as a CFl quarterback, threw touchdoan passes to Chris DeFrance and Dwight Edwards, and Tim Kearse returned a punt 68 yards for a TD to give Saskatchewan the lead, but Gerry Organ kicked a 31-yard field goal on the last play of the 1st half to get Ottawa on the scoreboard. Skip Walker rushed 2 yards for the first Ottawa touchdown in the 3rd quarter, and J.C. Watts completed a 3-yard pass to Dave Newman for the next Rough Rider TD on the last play of the quarter. Mr. Newman's touchdown was set up by a 75-yard punt return by Mariet Ford. Mr. Watts rushed 8 yards for the touchdown that gave Ottawa the lead early in the 4th quarter. Saskatchewan kicker Dave Ridgway missed all 3 of his field goal attempts, the last coming fromm 35 yards with 1:12 remaining. The kick, from 35 yards, would have given the Roughriders the lead, but went for a single point. Mr. Walker became the first player in 1983 to gain over 1,000 yards rushing for the season.

Greg Vavra's touchdown pass to Randy Guy late in the game enabled the Dinosaurs to escape with a victory over the Golden Bears at Varsity Stadium in Edmonton. This blogger had the pleasure of meeting veteran broadcaster Ken Newans of CFCN radio in Calgary, who was in town to call the CFL game between the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders the next day. Several members of the Eskimos were also at the game.

The Supreme Soviet confirmed Mikhail Gorbachev as President of the U.S.S.R. Yegor Ligachev, regarded as a hardline critic of Mr. Gorbachev, was relieved of his position as party ideologist and was put in charge of overseeing agriculture policy. The Supreme Soviet named Vadim Medvedev to replace Mr. Ligachev in the ideology and propaganada portfolios. President Andrei Gromyko, 79, was retired, ostensibly for reasons of health. Aleksandr Yakovlev, an ally of Mr. Gorbachev, replaced Anatoly Dobrynin as Foreign Minister. Viktor Chebrikov, an ally of Mr. Ligachev, was replaced as head of the secret police force KGB by Vladimir Kryuchkov. Mr. Gorbachev, elected unanimously by the 1,500 members of the Supreme Soviet, said that the people were not satisfied with the way that the government and party bodies were functioning.

Olympics
Carolyn Waldo and Michelle Cameron of Canada won the gold medal in synchronized swimming in Seoul. Miss Waldo, who had won the solo competition four days earlier, became the first Canadian woman to win two gold medals in a single summer Olympic games.

Lennox Lewis of Canada defeated Riddick Bowe of the United States to win the gold medal in the super heavyweight boxing final, becoming the first Canadian boxer to win a gold medal since 1932.
