Charles Christie, 75. Canadian-born U.S. motion picture executive. Mr. Christie and his brother Al, natives of London, Ontario, founded Christie Film Company in 1916. The company introduced performers such as Harold Lloyd and Fatty Arbuckle, but was hit hard by the stock market crash in 1929, and went into receivership in 1933.
Joseph Cermak, 40. Czech-born aviator. Captain Cermak, formerly with the Czech Air Force and the British Royal Air Force, died two days after the Avro York freighter piloted by him and Jerry Lozie crashed in a lake 80 miles north of Beaverlodge, Saskatchewan. The men had dropped supplies at a Distant Early Warning (DEW)-line site in the Northwest Territories and were supposed to fly to Edmonton via Yellowknife, but ended up going off course. Mr. Lozie was rescued on October 9.

It was Jack Jacobs Night at Winnipeg Stadium, honouring the recently-retired quarterback of the Blue Bombers from 1950-1954.
Ken Carpenter scored 2 touchdowns and Ron Adam scored another as the Roughriders beat the Lions before 23,321 fans at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. Joe Aguirre converted all 3 Saskatchewan TDs and added 2 field goals. All 3 Roughrider touchdowns came as the result of Lion fumbles. By Bailey scored the B.C. touchdown, converted by Ron Baker, and Al Pollard kicked a field goal. Mr. Pollard left the game in the 1st quarter after a hard tackle by Bobby Marlow, returned briefly, and then left for good in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Pollard was suffering from torn muscles in the neck and right leg, and a badly-bruised left shoulder. B.C. guard Bob Sikorski left the game with a dislocated shoulder.

The winning run was scored in the 6th inning on a base on balls to Felipe Alou and errors by catcher John Roseboro and third baseman Jim Gilliam. For the Braves, the win was their 86th of the season and their last in 12 years as the Milwaukee Braves; the team moved to Atlanta after the 1965 season.

Losing pitcher Tom Kelley allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. Lee Stange allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings to win the pitchers' duel over John Miller as the Indians won the second game 3-2.
Tommy John pitched a 4-hitter, and Tom McCraw hit a home run and single and scored 2 runs as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Kansas City Athletics 6-1 before 5,029 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Rollie Sheldon started on the mound for Kansas City and allowed 4 hits and 1 run--earned--in 7 innings before being relieved by Don Mossi, who allowed 1 hit, 1 base on balls, and 2 runs--both earned--in 1/3 inning and was tagged with the loss in the 463rd and last game of his 12-year major league career.

It was the second victory for Mr. Ali in three fights against "Smokin' Joe."

Rod Woodward, who had rushed for his team's only touchdown while serving as holder for placekicks in the previous game, returned an interception 63 yards in the 3rd quarter for the Rough Riders' only touchdown as they defeated the Tiger-Cats before 20,221 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Gerry Organ converted and added 2 field goals and 2 singles. Mr. Woodward, who was having an outstanding season, suffered a broken left arm in the 4th quarter and was lost for the rest of the season; it ws the same arm that he had broken in a pre-season game in 1970 which had cost him that entire season. The only Hamilton touchdown also came from the defence, when linebacker Lou Clare recovered a Rough Rider fumble in the Ottawa end zone 7 minutes after Mr. Woodward's TD. Former Dallas Cowboy Les Strayhorn played his first CFL game for Hamilton, leading all rushers with 119 yards on 20 carries and catching 4 passes for 18 yards. Art Green led the Rough Rides with 20 carries for 74 yards. Ottawa quarterback Tom Clements completed just 8 of 20 passes for 116 yards, and the Rough Riders managed just 12 first downs. Hamilton quarterbacks Jerry Keeling (8 for 15) and Jim McMillan (4 for 7) completed 12 of 23 passes, but for just 78 yards, and the Tiger-Cats managed only 11 first downs. It was the only CFL game for Ottawa defensive lineman Jim "Bubba" McCollum.

Curtis LeMay, 83. U.S. military officer. General LeMay was credited with devising a campaign of strategic bombing in the Pacific theatre of operations during World War II. After the war, he initiated the Berlin airlift, reorganized the Strategic Air Command, and served as U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff from 1961-1965. Gen. LeMay was the American Independent Party's candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1968, as the running mate of Alabama Governor George Wallace.

Kerwin Bell completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Shalon Baker in the 2nd half of overtime to give the Eskimos their win over the Lions before 30,046 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. After Lui Passaglia's fifth field goal of the game had given B.C. a 29-26 lead, Mr. Bell drove the Eskimos 75 yards in 28 seconds, rushing 1 yard for his second touchdown of the game with 1 second remaining in regulation time, with Sean Fleming's convert tying the game 29-29 and sending the game into overtime. Mr. Fleming kicked a 12-yard field goal to give the Eskimos the lead in the 1st half of overtime, but B.C. quarterback Danny McManus promptly answered with a 75-yard touchdown pass to Matt Clark, with Mr. Passaglia converting to give the Lions a 36-32 lead. Michael Soles scored the other Edmonton touchdown on a 12-yard rush in the 4th quarter. Zed Robinson rushed 14 yards to open the scoring for B.C. in the 1st quarter, and Robert Gordon scored the other B.C. TD on a pass from Mr. McManus with 1:36 remaining in the game to give the Lions a 26-22 lead after Mr. Passaglia's convert. Mr. Bell completed 28 of 48 passes for 395 yards. It was the first CFL game for Edmonton defensive lineman Pat McNerney.
