Economics and finance
The British Treasury announced that it was freeing the pound sterling from its official parity rate of $2.6057 U.S. and letting it float temporarily in the international money market to a new level determined by supply and demand. British Chancellor of the Exchequer Anthony Barber told the House of Commons that the move had been caused by large speculation against the pound that had forced the U.K. to use its reserves, and had led to intervention by Europe’s central banks to maintain the official rate.

Scandal
U.S. President Richard Nixon and aide H.R. Haldeman discussed ways to obstruct the Federal Bureau of Investigation's investigation of the June 17 break-in at the Democratic National Committee's offices in the Watergate complex in Washington.

Law
U.S. President Richard Nixon signed Title IX, a statute which barred sex discrimination at schools receiving federal funds, effectively forcing colleges to create sports programs for women if they wanted to keep their revenue-producing sports programs for men. The lasting effect of trying to enforce a non-existent equality has not been to enhance women's sports programs, but to kill men's programs (e.g., California State University at Fullerton, from which Canadian Football Hall of Famers such as Damon Allen and Mike Pringle came, no longer has a football program).

In the Israeli general election, the Labour Party, led by Yitzhak Rabin, took 44 seats in the 120-seat Knesset to take power for the first time in 15 years. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir’s Likud Party took 32 seats, while the three-party coalition called Meretz won 12 seats. Labour supported a “land for peace” compromise with Palestinians, while Likud opposed Palestinian self-rule and was committed to constructing more Jewish settlements in the occupied territories. Meretz supported an independent Palestine. It was expected that Meretz and several small parties would join with Labour to produce a parliamentary majority for Mr. Rabin.

Crime
New York crime boss John Gotti was sentenced to life in prison for racketeering and five counts of murder.
