Richard Day, 76. Canadian-born U.S. art director and set decorator. Mr. Day, a native of Victoria, was a captain in the Canadian Army in World War I, and moved to Hollywood after the war. He worked on almost 300 films from 1919-1970, receiving 20 Academy Award nominations for art direction, and winning 7 Oscars. Mr. Day died two weeks after his 76th birthday.

Sam Snead, 89. U.S. golfer. Mr. Snead won 81 PGA tournaments and every major championship for which he was eligible except the U.S. Open, where he finished in second place four times. His last appearance was at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia in April 2002, where his ceremonial tee shot beaned a spectator. Mr. Snead died just 4 days before his 90th birthday.
