Roy Hamey
. U.S. baseball executive. Mr. Hamey had a career in organized baseball spanning four decades, mostly with the New York Yankees' organization. He was president of the American Association (1946); general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates (1946-1950) and Philadelphia Phillies (1954-1959), and assistant general manager of the Yankees (1951-1954, 1959-1960). Mr. Hamey replaced George Weiss as general manager of the Yankees shortly after the 1960 season, and presided over teams that won three straight American League pennants (1961-1963), winning the World Series in his first two years as GM. He retired after the 1963 season, but came out of retirement briefly to serve as chief executive of the Seattle Pilots after the 1969 season, while AL President Joe Cronin was searching for someone to buy the club. Mr. Hamey returned to retirement after Bud Selig bought the Pilots in 1970 and moved them to Milwaukee to become the Brewers. Mr. Hamey died of a heart attack on December 14, 1983 at the age of 81.

World events
General Efrain Rios Montt deposed his two fellow junta members and named himself President of Guatemala. Gen. Rioa Montt had promised that he would be only a caretaker ruler and would not seek the presidency, but said that the other two junta members had been devoting more time to politics than to governing.

Diplomacy
U.S. President Ronald Reagan arrived in Bonn, West Germany, where he urged that both Eastern and Western blocs agree to a ceiling of 700,000 ground troops in Europe for each alliance. Mr. Reagan also reiterated U.S. commitment to the defense of Europe, particularly West Germany.

War
Israel claimed that its air force had shot down 22 Syrian fighter jets and destroyed a Syrian surface-to-air missile system in the Bekaa Valley of eastern Lebanon. Syria claimed to have lost only 16 planes, and that they had shot down 19 Israeli jets. Israeli ground forces had pushed to within four miles of Beirut.

Madge Kennedy, 96
. U.S. actress. Miss Kennedy starred on Broadway and in silent movies before marrying and retiring to the stage. From the 1950s to the 1970s, she appeared in character roles in television programs and in such movies as The Marrying Kind (1952); Lust for Life (1956); North By Northwest (1959); They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969); The Day of the Locust (1975); and Marathon Man (1976).

Journalism
The Panamanian newspaper La Prensa concluded a three-day series of articles by recently-ousted chief of staff Colonel Roberto Diaz Herrera, accusing dictator General Manuel Antonio Noriega of various crimes, including rigging the 1984 presidential election, and planning the 1981 death of dictator Omar Torrijos Herrera in a plane crash. The Roman Catholic Church called for an investigation of the charges.

Religion
One million people attended a mass conducted by Pope John Paul II in Lublin, Poland.
