Born on this date
María Montez
. Dominican-born actress. Miss Montez, born María África Gracia Vidal, was spotted by a talent scout while visitin New York in the late 1930s. She appeared in 26 movies from 1940-1951, and was known for playing seductresses in Technicolor costume adventure films such as Arabian Nights (1942); Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1944); and Cobra Woman (1944). Miss Montez married French actor Jean-Pierre Aumont in 1943, and the couple moved to France in the late 1940s and formed their own production company, Christina Productions. Miss Montez starred in five movies in France before her death on September 7, 1951 at the age of 39, apparently suffering a heart attack and drowning while taking a hot bath.

Japanese forces in Chekiang Province, China capturted the airfield of the walled city of Chuhsien, while heavy fighting continued in the centre of the city.

Economics and finance
In an anti-inflation decree, the Cuban Office of Price and Supply Control froze all prices of foodstuffs, clothing, and other commodities, and limited profits.

Horse racing
Shut Out, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, with Eddie Arcaro up, won the 74th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, New York in a time of 2:29 1/5. Alsab, the Kentucky Derby runner-up and Preakness Stakes winner, placed second.

South African justice minister Petrus Pelser ordered a month-long ban on marches and outdoor meetings. Students had spent weeks protesting apartheid.

Politics and government
U.S. Senator George McGovern moved further ahead of his competitors in the contest for the 1972 Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States when he won primaries in California, New Jersey, New Mexico, and his home state of South Dakota. The California primary gave the winner all 271 delegates to the party’s nominating convention.

Disasters
At least 427 miners were killed in a coal mine explosion in Wankie, Rhodesia.

War
The Israeli army invaded southern Lebanon by land, sea, and air, with the aim of destroying Palestine Liberation Organization strongholds in the area. More than 250 tanks and armoured personnel carriers, plus thousands of infantry troops fanned out across the frontier into southern Lebanon, stretching from the city of Tyre to the foothills of Mount Hermon, and captured several Palestinian strongholds.
