Economics and finance
The leaders of the world’s seven largest industrialized nations—U.S.A., U.K., Japan, Canada, France, West Germany, and Italy—met in Versailles, France, with the object of seeking an agreement to limit the use of cheap export credits in world trade. U.S. President Ronald Reagan raised the issue of putting sharp restrictions on credits to the U.S.S.R., but he found himself at odds with the leaders of the other six nations. The leaders did agree that all developed nations, including the U.S.R., be permitted to receive export financing at no less than 12.5% interest for short-term loans, and that there be no ceilings placed on the volume of such loans, or credit in general, to East bloc nations.
