Aviation
Amelia Earhart landed in the backyard of a farmhouse near Derry, Ireland, 15 hours after taking off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland in a single-engine Lockheed Vega and becoming the first woman and second person—after Charles Lindbergh five years earlier—to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Miss Earhart had intended to land in Paris, but went off course.

Scandal
The U.S. brokerage firm Merrill Lynch and Company agreed to pay a fine of $100 million to settle a case in which it was accused of publicly promoting stocks of companies with which it wanted to do business, while privately denigrating the same stocks.
