. King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, 1632-1648. Wladyslaw was Grand Duke of Moscow from 1610-1634, and also hereditary king of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals. King Wladyslaw was successful in keeping the Commonwealth out of the Thirty Years’ War, and in defending the Commonwealth from invasion.

Charles Bonnet, 73
. Genevan naturalist. Mr. Bonnet, a lifelong resident of the Republic of Geneva, was a lawyer by profession, but was mainly interested in the study of nature. He coined the term phyllotaxis to describe the arrangement of leaves on a plant. When his eyesight began to fail, Mr. Bonnet increasingly turned to philosophy and is regarded as a pre-evolutionary thinker, postulating that the universe was created by an act of divine will and then operates on its own, and that man and all other forms of existence have an inherent power of self-development and are destined to pass into a higher stage. Mr. Bonnet died after a long illness.

. U.S. businessman and politician. Mr. Fargo and Henry Wells co-founded Western Express (later combined with other firms to form American Express) in 1845, and co-founded Wells Fargo & Company in 1852. Mr. Fargo, a Democrat, served as Mayor of Buffalo from 1862-1866. He died after an illness of several months on August 3, 1881 at the age of 63.

Lemuel Allan Wilmot, 69
. Canadian politician and judge. Mr. Wilmot, a native of Lincoln, New Brunswick, was a Reformer, and sat in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1834-1851. He was a leader in the campaign for responsible government, and was the province's Attorney General from 1848-1851. Mr. Wilmot was a judge from 1851-1868, and then served as Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick from 1868-1873. He died in Fredericton.

Terry Larkin of the Chicago White Stockings allowed only a 1st-inning single by Orator Shaffer in beating the Indianapolis Hoosiers 3-1 at Lakefront Park in Chicago, winning the pitchers' duel over Jim McCormick, who was making his major league debut. Also making his major league debut was Chicago second baseman Bill McClellan.

Edward B. Lewis
. U.S. geneticist. Dr. Lewis helped to found the field of evolutionary developmental biology, and shared the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Eric Wieschaus "for their discoveries concerning the genetic control of early embryonic development." Dr. Lewis died on July 21, 2004 at the age of 86.

With 2 out in the bottom of the 14th inning‚ Merlin Kopp of the Philadelphia Athletics stole home with the winning run as they beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Mr. Kopp had 2 steals in the game‚ as well as a double and triple. . President of Nicaragua, 1910. General Mena, a conservative, was part of the coalition government which also included liberal Juan Jose Estrada and conservatives Emiliano Chamorro and Adolfo Diaz, serving as President from August 27-30, 1910. Gen. Mena was sent into exile in Panama, and was assassinated at Ponelova.

W.H. Reddington. U.S. military aviator. Lieutenant Reddington, a U.S. Navy flier attached to the aircraft carrier Langley, was killed when his plane went into a nose dive after taking off from the deck of the ship.

The transatlantic airplane Bremen was damaged in the attempt to take off from Greenly Island, near Newfoundland, for New York City.

The German federal election resulted in the Social Democratic party (SPD), led by Otto Wels, leading with 153 of 491 seats in the Reichstag. The German National People's Party (DNVP), led by Kuno von Westarp, was next with 73 seats, while the Centre Party, led by Chancellor Wilhelm Marx, finished third with 61 seats. The Nazi Party, contesting its first election since the ban on the party had been lifted in 1925, finished ninth, taking 12 seats and 2.6% of the vote.

Buzz Beurling, 26
. Canadian military aviator. A native of Verdun, Quebec, Flight Lieutenant George Frederick Beurling dropped out of high school in order to fly planes, but was rejected by the Royal Canadian Air Force at the outset of World War II. He joined the U.K. Royal Air Force in September 1940, and became the greatest Canadian ace of World War II, recording 31 1/2 kills, 27 over Malta during a two-week period in 1942, earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Service Order, Distinguished Flying Medal, and Bar. Flt.Lt. Beurling was a Christian who believed that Jews were God's chosen people; accordingly, he turned down an offer to join the Egyptian Air Force during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and joined the Israeli Air Force instead. At the conclusion of a test flight of a Noorduyn Norseman transport aircraft which was to be delivered to Israel, Flt. Lt. Beurling and co-pilot Leonard Cohen were killed when the plane crashed while landing at Aeroporto dell'Urbe in Rome.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 13-4 before 11,953 fans at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn‚ as Stan Musial had 4 hits‚ including a home run and 2 doubles. Stan the Man was 11 for 15 in the series. Enos Slaughter chipped in with three hits as Howie Pollet won over Joe Hatten to improve to 4-0 for the season.

Cotton Minahan, 75. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Minahan played in 2 games with the Cincinnati Reds in 1907, starting and losing both, with a 1.29 earned run average in 14 innings. He played at least 4 seasons in the minor leagues from 1904-1908, posting a record of 39-41.

Soviet Academy of Sciences President Aleksandr Nesmeyanov reported that Laika, the dog aboard the satellite Sputnik 2 in November 1957, "died from overheating of the sputnik by rays of the sun."

Robert Nix (Democrat) became the first Negro sent to the United States Congress from Pennsylvania when he defeated Republican candidate Cecil Moore in a special election for Pennsylvania's 4th District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The mayor and corporation of High Wycombe were weighed in in full view of the public to see whether or not they had been getting fat at the taxpayers' expense. The annual custom dates back to medieval times and is unique to this Buckinghamshire market town.

The St. Louis Cardinals traded shortstop Alvin Dark to the Chicago Cubs for relief pitcher Jim Brosnan. Mr. Dark was hitting .297 with 1 home run and 5 runs batted in in 18 games that year with the Cardinals; Mr. Brosnan was 3-4 with a 3.14 earned run average in 8 games with the Cubs in 1958.

Before 36,167 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Johnny Kucks pitched a 5-hitter and doubled in a run to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-1 win over the last-place White Sox to extend their winning streak to 7 games. Jim Fregosi hit for the cycle, with the single driving home Tom Burgmeier with 2 out in the bottom of the 11th inning as the California Angels edged the Boston Red Sox 5-4 before 10,384 fans at Anaheim Stadium. The cycle was the second of Mr. Fregosi's career, tying him with several other players for the major league record. He also said that the U.S. had "made up its mind" to move toward full diplomatic relations with China.

Horse racing

It was the longest home run in park history, and was also Mr. Stargell's 407th home run, tying him with Duke Snider on the major league career list. Mr. Stargell hit 2 homers in the game and drove in 5 runs, while Bert Blyleven pitched a 3-hit shutout.

Behind Pedro Martinez (5-0)‚ the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 6-2 before 26,953 fans at Fenway Park in Boston‚ pinning the loss on Jaime Navarro. It was Mr. Navarro's first loss to the Red Sox following 10 straight wins‚ dating back to 1991.

The Detroit Tigers fell behind 8-2 after the 1st inning, but amassed 20 hits as they came back to defeat the Minnesota Twins 12-11 before 9,442 fans at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. Damian Easley led the Detroit attack with 2 home runs, a double, and 6 runs batted in. The Twins scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th and had runners on first and second bases, but Alex Ochoa grounded into a force play to end the game.

Kevin Tapani pitched a 3-hitter and had a hit of his own to lead the Chicago Cubs over the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 before 24,245 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

The Houston Astros scored 2 runs with 2 out in the top of the 9th inning to break a 2-2 tie and held on to defeat the Montreal Expos 4-3 before 8,372 fans at Olympic Stadium in Montreal. The Expos scored a run with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th and had runners on first and second bases, but Vladimir Guerrero struck out to end the game.

The AAA Indianapolis Indians performed a feat possibly never before duplicated in professional baseball. In the 5th inning of a game against the Pawtucket Red Sox‚ Indianapolis players hit for a "Homer cycle." Pete Rose‚ Jr. opened the inning with a solo home run; Jason Williams connected for a 3-run shot; Glenn Murray slugged a grand slam; and Guillermo Garcia finished the scoring with a 2-run blast. The Indians won the American Association game 11-4.

. U.S. political adviser. Mr. Jordan worked with Jimmy Carter during the 1970s, beginning with Mr. Carter's successful Georgia gubernatorial campaign in 1970, and served as White House Chief of Staff from 1979-1980. He died of cancer.
