Terrorism
With British Trade Commissioner James Cross and Quebec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte being held hostage by FLQ terrorists in Montreal, 15 soldiers from the 22ième Régiment arrived in the city to assist civil authorities; other units took up positions in Québec City. Police had Jacques Lanctôt under suspicion, while Paul Rose was picked up by surveillance but lost.

Journalism
Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Ottawa bureau reporter Tim Ralfe engaged in an impromptu debate outside the Parliament buildings in Ottawa regarding whether Mr. Trudeau's proposed words and actions toward FLQ terrorists threatened Canadians' civil liberties. When asked how far he would go, Mr. Trudeau said, "Just watch me."

Abominations
The Canadian government of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China after almost two years of negotiations, while at the same time severing diplomatic ties with the Chinese Nationalist government in Taiwan. The joint Canadian-Chinese announcement said that the government of Canada "noted" Communist China’s claim to Taiwan, but did not accept it. Nationalist Chinese Ambassador Hu chi Hsueh immediately left Canada.

Politics and government
The Liberal Party, led by Gerald Regan, upset the governing Progressive Conservative government of Premier G.I. Smith in the Nova Scotia provincial election. The Liberals took 23 of 46 seats in the House of Assembly, an increase of 17 from their total in the most recent election in 1967. The PCs, despite having a slight edge in the popular vote (46.9%-46.1%), dropped from 40 seats to 21. The New Democratic Party, led by Jeremy Akerman, won the remaining 2 seats.

Crime
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested fugitive Angela Davis in a New York City motel after being sought nationwide for two months. Miss Davis, a former university professor from California, was wanted on murder and kidnapping charges related to a courthouse shooting on August 7 in San Rafael, California during a trial of a Black Panther terrorist that resulted in the deaths of Judge Harold Haley and three others.

Diplomacy
Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu began a two-week visit to the United States, becoming the first leader of a Communist state to be an official guest of the U.S. administration of President Richard Nixon.

Baseball

Frank Robinson and Don Buford also hit home runs for the Orioles, while third baseman Brooks Robinson drove in 2 runs with a double and made a couple of great plays in the field.

Football
CFL
Calgary (6-7) 28 @ Hamilton (6-6-1) 30
British Columbia (6-6-1) 9 @ Edmonton (11-2) 33

Rufus Crawford scored twice on 1-yard rushes and middle linebacker Ben Zambiasi made 2 interceptions to snuff out Calgary drives as the Tiger-Cats won in front of 19,989 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Hamilton’s other touchdown came on a 42-yard pass from Dave Marler to Leif Pettersen. Calgary quarterback Ken Johnson completed 23 of 28 passes for 295 yards and touchdowns of 72 yards to James Sykes and 14 yards to Ron Robinson. For Mr. Robinson, it ws his first CFL touchdown. Backup Calgary quarterback Bruce Threadgill threw just 1 pass, but it went for a 78-yard touchdown to Willie Armstead; it was Mr. Armstead’s only reception of the day. Mr. Threadgill suffered a season-ending shoulder separation shortly after this play. Mr. Sykes rushed for just 30 yards on 9 carries, but caught 8 passes for 117. Rocky DiPietro led the Hamilton receivers with 106 yards on 5 receptions.

The Eskimo defense held the Lions to just 9 first downs and 95 yards net offense before 43,346 fans on a dark and drizzly Thanksgiving day afternoon at Commonwealth Stadium. Warren Moon completed 17 of 23 passes for 247 yards and a 31-yard touchdown to Tom Scott in the 2nd quarter. Mr. Moon also rushed 6 times for 49 yards, including an 8-yard run for the first touchdown just 2:37 into the game. Mr. Scott scored the game’s second touchdown--and his first of the game--on a 4-yard rush just over 4 minutes later. It was his second rushing touchdown in as many years, on as many rushing plays. Dave Cutler added 3 converts and 4 field goals. Larry Key rushed 4 yards for the only B.C. touchdown, while Lui Passaglia converted and added 2 singles. With wide receivers Brian Kelly and Waddell Smith having suffered serious injuries in the loss at Winnipeg the week before, the Eskimos activated Randy Simmrin and former Washington Redskin Danny Buggs. Mr. Buggs made a great catch for a 25-yard gain on the first play of the game, and finished with 2 catches for 29 yards. Mr. Simmrin also caught 2 passes for 29 yards, but seemed nervous in what turned out to be his only CFL game; his first reception was for a gain of 22, but he fumbled and the Lions recovered. Tom Wilkinson, who had been used just for holding on placekicks since August because of a hamstring injury, relieved Mr. Moon in the 4th quarter, but looked rusty, completing 1 of 4 passes for 13 yards. Mr. Scott led all receivers with 94 yards on 6 receptions, while Jim Germany of the Eskimos led all rushers with 9 carries for 51 yards. Joe Paopao started at quarterback for the Lions and completed 8 of 14 passes for 86 yards and an interception before leaving the game after he injured his throwing hand when he banged it on the helmet of Edmonton defensive lineman Ron Estay. Rookie Roy Dewalt relieved Mr. Paopao but completed just 3 of 12 passes for 13 yards.

Rickey Foggie started at quarterback for the Argos, but left in the 2nd quarter with a finger injury, and was replaced by Mr. Congemi. The Argos completed just 10 of 32 passes for 149 yards.

Football
CFL
Toronto (5-9-1) 32 @ Hamilton (8-7-0-2) 8

The Argonauts sacked Hamilton quarterbacks Todd Bankhead and Billy Dicken 5 times and made 3 interceptions as they jumped out to a 21-1 halftime lead and held the Tiger-Cats to 11 first downs and 175 yards net offense for the entire game. Toronto running back Michael Jenkins rushed 20 times for 102 yards and caught 5 passes for 66. Kerwin Bell passed for touchdowns of 4 yards to Eddie Brown and 17 yards to Andre Kirwan, and former Tiger-Cat Calvin Tiggle returned an interception 8 yards for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter--just after the Tiger-Cats had stopped the Argonauts on a goal line stand. Jacob Marini added 3 converts and 3 field goals, while Noel Prefontaine punted for a pair of singles. Hamilton’s only touchdown came 2:25 into the 3rd quarter on a 20-yard pass from Mr. Bankhead to Mike Morreale, who led all receivers with 68 yards on 4 receptions. If I’m not mistaken, it was in this game that Hamilton head coach Ron Lancaster gave clear instructions to Mr. Dicken on what to do on a third-down gamble, only to see the rookie do exactly what he’d told him not to do, resulting in a turnover. The coach’s reaction made for great television. 19,632 attended the game at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
