Magnus III, 30 (?)
. King of Norway, 1093-1103. Magnus Barefoot succeeded Olaf III as king. He became the last Norwegian king to die in battle when he was killed in an ambush in Ireland. Magnus was succeeded on the throne by his sons Sigurd I, Eystein I, and Olaf Magnusson.

. English theologian. Mr. Owen was one of the leading Calvinist scholars of his day, and became a good friend of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. His writings are still in print today.

Kate Douglas Wiggin, 66
. U.S. educator and author. Mrs. Wiggin established San Francisco's first free kindergarten in 1878, and with her sister, established a training school for kindergarten teachers. She wrote books for children, the best-known of which were Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1903) and Mother Carey's Chickens (1911).

Simone Weil, 34
. French philosopher and political and social activist. Miss Weil was a Communist who was active in France and Germany. In her later years she became an ostensibly Christian mystic. Miss Weil died of tuberculosis.

War
The first Québec Conference concluded after U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill agreed that an American would command the cross-English Channel invasion still scheduled for May 1944, and that every effort would be made to have Japan surrender unconditionally within 12 months after the defeat of Germany. U.K. Royal Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force bombers dropped 1,800 tons of explosives on Berlin in their 74th attack upon the city. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Grace Buchanan-Dineen, Theresa Behrens, and Dr. William Thomas in Detroit and Bertrand Hoffman in New York on charges of sending war information to Germany. The U.S. War Department announced that East Coast Defense Commander Lieutenant General Hugh Drum would be chairman of the Inter-American Defense Board.

Northeast Louisiana State College senior John Pennel became the first outdoor pole-vaulter to clear 17 feet, with a mark of 17 feet 3/4 inches at the Florida Gold Coast Amateur Athletic Union meet in Miami. He chose to use a fiberglass pole at a time when most vaulters were still using wooden ones.

Politics and government
The 10th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party began in total secrecy. Premier Chou En-lai presented a report, made public a week later, charging that both the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. were "contending for hegemony," but conceding that relations with the U.S.A. had "improved to some extent." Mr. Chou emphasized that the Chinese considered the "socialist-imperialist" Soviet Union a greater threat than the U.S., and warned against attack from the U.S.S.R. He also outlined, for the first time publicly, the details of an alleged plot in 1971 by the late Defense Minister Lin Piao to assassinate Chairman Mao Tse-tung and set up a rival Central Committee.

Terrorism
Two people were injured in the explosion of a bomb that had been mailed to the London Stock Exchange.

Crime
12 undercover narcotics agents were indicted in Alton, Illinois in connection with six illegal drug raids made in southwestern Illinois in April 1973. The indictments stated that the agents had conspired to search six private homes without search warrants and to deprive 11 residents of their constitutional rights.

Scott Nearing, 100
. U.S. scholar and political and social activist. A pacifist and socialist, Mr. Nearing opposed American involvement in both World Wars, and was willing to pay the price of losing employment for taking such positions. He travelled to various countries with socialist and Communist governments and wrote about his experiences. In the 1950s Mr. Nearing and his second wife Helen adopted a self-sufficient agrarian lifestyle in Maine, presaging the "back to the land" movement that started to ecome popular a decade later. Mr. Nearing died 18 days after his 100th birthday as the result of a self-imposed fast.

Crime
Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos named five judges known to be friendly to him to investigate the August 21 assassination of opposition leader Benigno Aquino.

Bob Dylan performed in Edmonton for the first time, appearing at Northlands Coliseum with Tracy Chapman as the opening act. Doug Sahm of Sir Douglas Quintet fame joined Mr. Dylan and Miss Chapman for an encore, performing She's About a Mover. This blogger was in attendance, and I paid $26.75 for my ticket.

Crime
In Toronto, Minnesota North Stars' hockey player Dino Ciccarelli was sentenced to 24 hours in jail and fined $1,000 for assault for hitting Luke Richardson of the Toronto Maple Leafs over the head twice with a hockey stick during a game. Mr. Ciccarelli was released after two hours, becoming the first NHL player to be jailed for a penalty on the ice.
