Baseball
The Texas Rangers set a modern major league record for the most runs scored by a team in a game as they routed the Baltimore Orioles 30-3 in the first game of a doubleheader before 21,828 fans at Oriole Park in Baltimore. The combined run total was also major league record. Oddly, the Orioles led 3-0 after 3 innings. Another oddity from that game is that the eighth and ninth men in the Texas lineup each drove in 7 runs. The Rangers scored 3 runs in the 8th inning to overcome a 7-6 deficit and win the second game 9-7.

2 errors contributed to 3 unearned runs as the Oakland Athletics scored 4 runs in the 7th inning and defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 before 31,145 fans at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

The Kansas City Royals held off a late rally to edge the Chicago White Sox 7-6 before 31,739 fans at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. The Royals led 7-2 after 7 1/2 innings, but Paul konerko hit a solo home run for the White Sox in the 8th inning, and Josh Fields hit a 3-run homer with 2 out in the 9th. Jim Thome then singled, but Joakim Soria struck out Mr. Konerko to end the game.

The Minnesota Twins scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and coasted to an 8-4 win over the Seattle Mariners before 29,881 fans at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. Minnesota third baseman Tommy Watkins batted 2 for 5 with a run a putout, and 3 assists in the 9th and last game of his major league career; he left the game after suffering a strained abdominal muscle when he was thrown out at home plate attempting to score in the bottom of the 8th inning, and never played in the majors again.

Franklin Gutierrez doubled and scored in the 4th inning and hit a 3-run home run in the 5th inning to help the Cleveland Indians defeat the Detroit Tigers 11-8 before 40,914 fans at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Tigers scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th and had runners on first and second bases with 1 out, but Joe Borowski retired Carlos Guillen on a fly ball to left field, and struck out Ivan Rodriguez to end the game.

The New York Yankees scored 7 runs in the last 3 innings to defeat the Anaheim Angels 8-2 before 44,326 fans at Angel Stadium. Jorge Posada led the New York attack with 2 doubles and a single, 2 runs, and 2 runs batted in.

The San Diego Padres withstood a 3-run 9th-inning rally to defeat the New York Mets 7-5 before 50,060 fans at Shea Stadium in New York. Carlos Beltran was on second base for New York with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, but Trevor Hoffman struck out Carlos Delgado to end the game.

The Los Angeles Dodgers scored 12 runs in the last 4 innings to rout the Philadelphia Phillies 15-3 before 37,321 fans at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Los Angeles right fielder Matt Kemp had a triple, 3 singles, 3 runs, and 2 runs batted in, while second baseman Jeff Kent hit a pair of solo home runs.

The Pittsburgh Pirates scored at least 1 run in each of the first 6 innings as they beat the Colorado Rockies 11-2 before 20,629 fans at Coors Field in Denver. Second baseman Freddy Sanchez led the Pittsburgh attack with a home run, a double, 2 singles, and 3 runs batted in. Colorado catcher Geronimo Gil batted 0 for 4 and made 2 putouts in the 277th and last game of his 6-year major league career.

Yadier Molina doubled home Scott Rolen, and Jim Edmonds followed with a 2-run home run as the St. Louis Cardinals scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and defeated the Florida Marlins 6-4 before 42,147 fans at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Jeremy Hermida's 2-run homer had climaxed a 3-run rally in the top of the 7th to give Florida a 4-3 lead.

Stephen Drew singled with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th inning, advanced to third base on a single by Chris Snyder, and scored on a ground out by Jeff Cirillo to break a 2-2 tie as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 before 31,720 fans at Chase Field in Phoenix.

A passed ball and an error contributed to 2 unearned runs for the Chicago Cubs in the top of the 10th inning as they broke a 2-2 tie and defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-2 before 39,548 fans at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
