1837


War
A rebel force of 150 led by Bonaventure Viger and Dr. Timothée Kimber ambushed an 18-man troop of the Montréal Volunteer Cavalry led by Lieutenant Ermatinger and Constable Malo on the Chambly Road at Longueuil, Lower Canada, returning from St-Jean, Lower Canada, where they had arrested Patriote leaders Notaire Pierre Desmarais and Dr. Joseph Davignon. Shots were fired and there were several wounded on both sides, including Mr. Viger, who was hit in the leg; John Molson, Jr. took several bullets in his cap, but was unharmed. The Patriotes liberated prisoners Desmarais and Davignon in this, the first military action in the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837. Governor Lord Gosford issued warrants for the arrest of 26 Patriote leaders on charges of high treason; Louis-Joseph Papineau and Wolfred Nelson were among those named. Only five leaders were captured.

Mr. Pennock kicked 4 singles to outduel Mr. Kennedy, who kicked 3, as Queen's College edged the University of Toronto in Kingston in a game that was greatly affected by a strong wind.

Tiger Flowers, 32
. U.S. boxer. Theodore Flowers began boxing professionally in 1918; he won the world middleweight title with a 15-round decision over Harry Greb on February 26, 1926, and retained the title with a 15-round split decision over Mr. Greb six months later. Mr. Flowers lost the title to Mickey Walker in a 10-round decision on December 3, 1926, but many thought he had won the fight. Mr. Flowers fought as a light heavyweight after losing the middleweight title; he had a 10-round draw against Maxie Rosenbloom on November 9 and scored a 4-round technical knockout of Leo Gates on November 12, but died of complications from surgery to remove a growth from above his right eye. Mr. Flowers compiled a professional record of 136 wins, 15 losses, 8 draws, and 2 no contests.

Gerry McDougall rushed 34 yards for a touchdown and Steve Oneschuk kicked a convert and 3 field goals to help the Tiger-Cats defeat the Alouettes before 19,609 fans at Molson Stadium. Hal Patterson scored the Montreal touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Sam Etcheverry in the 3rd quarter; Bill Bewley converted, and kicked a field goal in the 1st quarter. Hamilton linebacker Cookie Gilchrist was ejected in the 1st quarter for slugging Mr. Etcheverry at the end of a play. Late in the game, Mr. Etcheverry punted into the Hamilton end zone, but officials refused to award Montreal a point after youths ran off with the ball. At the end of the game, about 200 youths attacked field judge Norm Maxwell and several Hamilton players as they attempted to leave the field.

The Blue Bombers came back from a 7-0 deficit to upset the Eskimos before 13,849 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Edmonton opened the scoring in the 2nd quarter on a touchdown by Johnny Bright, converted by Joe Mobra. Gerry James returned the kickoff for a touchdown; the deficit remained 7-6 when Kenny Ploen missed the convert attempt. Charlie Shepard punted twice for singles to give the Blue Bombers an 8-7 halftime lead. In the 2nd half, Mr. Ploen completed a 72-yard pass to Dennis Mendyk and converted. Gerry James scored a single on a missed field goal attempt and then kicked a field goal to close the scoring.

Mike Norcia scored 16 points on 2 touchdowns, a convert, and a field goal, and Bob Celeri added a single as the Dutchmen edged the Lords before 6,500 fans at Labatt Park to win their fourth straight--and last--Ontario Rugby Football Union championship. Ron King and Max Kitzelman scored London touchdowns, with Don Wright adding a convert and a field goal.

. U.S. disc jockey and radio programming director. Captain Mikey, born Marion Elbridge Herrington, was a disc jockey and programming director at various radio stations, mainly in California. He was best known for his work with the San Jose stations KLIV (1966-1969) and KOME (1977-1982) and the Los Angeles station KMET (1972-1974). Mr. Herrington inspired the fictional characters Jeff Dugan in the movie FM (1978) and Andy Travis in the television comedy series WKRP in Cincinnati (1978-1982). He died of leukemia.

The People's Republic of China released pro-democracy dissident Wei Jingsheng from jail for medical reasons after nearly 18 years of incarceration, and deported him to the United States.

Derrell "Mookie" Mitchell and Mike "Pinball" Clemons caught Mr. Flutie's other TD passes. Saskatchewan quarterback Reggie Slack completed 22 of 37 passes for 268 yards and a touchdown to Mike Saunders, and rushed 1 yard for the game's final touchdown with 1:18 remaining in the game. Shawn Daniels rushed 3 yards for the first Saskatchewan TD with 41 seconds remaining in the 1st half. The biggest play for the Roughriders was the game's opening kickoff, which Shannon Baker returned 74 yards, leading to a field goal by Paul McCallum to open the scoring. Among the players whose careers ended with this game was Toronto receiver Norm Casola, who caught 1 pass for 13 yards; he died of cancer less than a year later at the age of 29.

Grethe Kausland, 60
. Norwegian singer and actress. Mrs. Kausland, born Grethe Nilsen, had several hit records as "Lille Grethe," and appeared in several films as a child. She later performed with the show group Dizzie Tunes and appeared in several television series. Mrs. Kausland died of lung cancer.
