Louis Daguerre
. French photographer. Mr. Daguerre was a painter and developer of diorama theatre, but was best known as the inventor of the daguerreotype, the first publicly available process of photography. He invented the process in the late 1830s, and it was popular through the 1850s. Mr. Daguerre died of a heart attack on July 10, 1851 at the age of 63.

The Canadian Pacific Railway launched the 829-ton steamboat Minto at Nakusp, British Columbia. The ship was refabricated in Toronto for service on the Stikine River in northern B.C. It was retired in April, 1954, and burned near Galena Bay on the Upper Arrow River on August 1, 1968.

Boxing
Tom Sharkey (26-2-5-1) knocked out Joe Goddard (32-5-9-2) in the 6th round of a heavyweight fight at Mechanic's Pavilion in San Francisco. Mr. Goddard's head struck the boards hard after Mr. Sharkey landed a roundhouse right and then tackled him. Referee Bob McArthur had to restrain Mr. Sharkey from fouling Mr. Goddard as he lay on top of him.

. Italian aristocrat. Prince Luigi Marcantonio Francesco Rodolfo Scipione Borghese, the Prince of Salmona, was an industrialist, politician, explorer, mountain climber, and auto racing driver. With his chauffeur, Ettore Guizardi--who did most of the driving--and journalist Luigi Barzini, Sr., Prince Borghese won the Peking to Paris auto race in 1907. Prince Borghese was succeeded as Prince of Salmona by his younger brother Livio.

Guy Bieler parachuted inside France to act as the first Canadian Army secret agent inside France during World War II. British troops in Libya drove to within 70 miles of Bengazi, while the main Axis force continued its retreat toward El Agheila. U.S., U.K., and French forces entered Tunisia from several points. The U.S.S.R. claimed that Germany had lost 1,000-4,000 men daily in their three-week offensive on Stalingrad.

Vichy French Chief of State Marshal Philippe Pétain appointed Pierre Laval as dictator of Nazi-occupied France.

The United States House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee rejected President Franklin D. Roosevelt's request for wartime powers to suspend trade laws that hampered the war effort.

Argentine Interior Minister Miguel Culaciati instructed governments of all provinces to prevent dissemination of totalitarian propaganda by Axis agents.

A U.S. federal jury in New York convicted German-born U.S. citizen Anthony Cramer of treason for aiding Werner Thiel, a Nazi saboteur who had been executed on August 8, 1942.

The United States and Mexico agreed that they would jointly rehabilitate key lines of the Mexican National Railways to facilitate transportation of war materials.

Kurt Schuschnigg, 79
. Chancellor of Austria, 1934-1938. Mr. Schuschnigg, a member of the Christian Social Party from 1927-1933 and the Fatherland Front from 1933-1938, took office as Chancellor following the assassination of Englebert Dollfuss. Mr. Schuschnigg preferred Austria to remain independent, and resigned after the Anschluss with Nazi Germany in March 1938. He was immediately placed under house arrest, and spent World War II in concentration camps. Mr. Schuschnigg emigrated to the United States after the war, and was a professor of political science at Saint Louis University from 1948-1967. He died 27 days before his 80th birthday.

Crime
A jury in Birmingham, Alabama convicted former Ku Klux Klansman Robert "Dynamite Bob" Chambliss, 73, of first-degree murder in the September 15, 1963 bombing of a Baptist church in Birmingham, resulting in the deaths of four young Negro girls. Mr. Chambliss was sentenced to life imprisonment, and the prosecution announced that they were seeking further indictments in the case.

Boxing
Leon Spinks (6-0-1) won a 10-round unanimous decision over Alfio Righetti (27-1) in a nationally-televised heavyweight bout at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. On the undercard, Jesse Burnett (18-4-1) scored a technical knockout of Lonnie Bennett (28-4) at 1:04 of the 6th round of a light heavyweight bout, as Mr. Bennett was knocked down 4 times. Former U.S. Olympian John Tate (7-0) scored a technical knockout of Frank Schram (17-9) in the 1st round, and Bernardo Mercado (19-0) knocked out Fili Moala (9-1-1) in the 8th round of heavyweight bouts.

Jacques Anquetil, 53
. French cyclist. Mr. Anquetil was the first man to win the Tour de France five times, winning in 1957 and from 1961-1964. In 1961 he led every stage of the event. Mr. Anquetil's victories in the 1950s and '60s are too numerous too list here. He retired at the end of 1969 and became a farmer and cycling consultant. Mr. Anquetil died of stomach cancer.

Scandal
The United States Congress issued its final report on the Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages scandal, concluding that the administration of President Ronald Reagan had exhibited "secrecy, deception, and disdain for the law."

Economics and finance
The United States Commerce Department reported that housing starts had declined 8% in October to the lowest level in four years.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police seized a record 4,323 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of $2.7 billion. The Canadian Armed Forces, with the help of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, tracked the plane from South America, then chased it with jet fighters and military helicopters over New Brunswick, forcing it to land at a remote airstrip at Casey, Québec. Two days later, they closed a processing lab in Laval, Québec, and arrested four Québeckers and three Colombian nationals.

Charles Roberts rushed for 97 yards and Keith Stokes returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown as the Blue Bombers defeated the Argonauts before 33,467 fans at Rogers Centre. Toronto quarterback Michael Bishop completed 21 of 45 passes for 376 yards and rushed 1 yard for his team's only touchdown, which was set up by a 90-yard pass completion from Mr. Bishop to Arland Bruce. Late in the game, Winnipeg quarterback Kevin Glenn suffered a broken left arm while trying to recover a fumble, putting him out of action for the rest of the game and the Grey Cup game; he was replaced by Ryan Dinwiddie. Damon Allen dressed as the backup for Mr. Bishop but didn't play, ending his 23-year Hall of Fame career.



Kerry Joseph threw 2 touchdown passes and the Roughriders scored 16 points off turnovers as they beat the Lions before 54,712 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. The Saskatchewan defense recorded 7 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and 2 interceptions.
