The day after Canadian Premier John A. Macdonald and Deputy Premier George-Étienne Cartier resumed their offices, they completed what the Opposition referred to as the "Double Shuffle" when they got all their ministers to resign and exchange portfolios for one day to get around the technicality that under the Independence of Parliament Act of 1857, a newly appointed minister was obliged to resign his seat and face a by-election. All ministers resumed the offices they held before July 28. Mr. Cartier adopted Confederation as the major plank of his Liberal-Conservative Party platform; another major plank was the adoption of Ottawa as the future capital of the Province of Canada.

The first Australian rules football match was played between Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College.

Huntley Wright. U.K. actor. Mr. Wright had a performing career of more than 50 years, but was primarily known for appearing in musical comedies in the early 20th century. He also appeared in several movies and radio programs, and even in an early television broadcast. Mr. Wright died of a heart attack on July 10, 1941, four weeks before his 73rd birthday.

Oley Speaks, 74. U.S. singer and songwriter. Mr. Speaks had a successful singing career as a soloist and wrote the music for over 250 songs, but is mainly known for one song: On the Road to Mandalay (1907), with the lyrics taken from Rudyard Kipling's poem Mandalay.

Charles Bryant, 69. U.K.-born U.S. actor and movie director. Mr. Bryant was a stage actor who directed and appeared in several silent films with his then-wife Alla Nazimova in the 1910s and early '20s.

Justice Minister and Attorney General Louis St. Laurent was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada on the first ballot at the party's leadership convention at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa, easily defeating Jimmy Gardiner and Chubby Power. A U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. unanimously quashed playwright Arthur Miller's 1956 conviction for contempt of Congress after a two-year legal battle. Mr. Miller had, in testimony before the House of Representatives Committee on Un-American Activities, refused to name names of alleged Communist writers with whom he had attended five or six meetings in New York in 1947.

B.C. quarterback Danny McManus, making his first start since joining the team as a free agent after 3 years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, threw 4 touchdown passes--2 to Cory Philpot and 1 each to Ray Alexander and Mike Trevathan. Edmonton quarterbacks Damon Allen and Rickey Foggie each rushed for a touchdown, and Mr. Allen completed a touchdown pass to Kasey Dunn for the 4th and last touchdown of Mr. Dunn's CFL career. The Edmonton defense, widely praised for its play in the first 4 games of the season, appeared to have been reading too many press clippings.

Former Eskimo quarterback Danny McManus led the Tiger-Cats to a 28-3 halftime lead as they coasted to a rout of the Eskimos before 33,058 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. The only Edmonton touchdown was scored in the 3rd quarter by Don Blair on a 44-yard pass from Jimmy Kemp, who played the entire game in relief of injured starter David Archer, much to the displeasure of Edmonton fans, who wanted to see third-string quarterback Marcus Crandell play, especially once the outcome wasn't in doubt. It was the third time within six years that Mr. McManus had quarterbacked his team to victory at Commonwealth Stadium on August 7: in addition to the B.C. Lions' 39-23 win in 1993, he led the Eskimos to a 45-11 rout of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1997.

Bernie Brillstein, 77. U.S. talent agent and producer. Mr. Brillstein was one of Hollywood's most influential talent agents, and produced such television programs as Hee Haw, The Muppet Show, and The Sopranos. He died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
