Mary, Queen of Scots, 44. Queen of Scots, 1542-1567; Queen Consort of France, 1559-1560. Mary, a Roman Catholic, had been forced to abdicate the Scottish throne in favour of her 1-year-old son, King James I, and had fled to England to seek the protection of her cousin, once removed, Queen Elizabeth I. However, Queen Elizabeth, a Protestant, regarded Mary as a threat, and after more than 18 years of imprisonment, Mary was beheaded at Fotheringay Castle, Northamptonshire.

Fritz Todt, 50. German engineer and politician. Mr. Todt was a civil engineer who joined the Nazi Party in 1922 and the SA in 1931, achieving the rank of SA-Obergruppenführer in 1938. He was appointed Inspector General of German Roadways in July 1933, a position he held for the rest of his life, directing the construction of the German autobahns. Mr. Todt was appointed as General Plenipotentiary for Regulation of the Construction Industry in 1938; Reichsminister for Armaments and Munitions in 1940; and Inspector General for Water and Energy in 1941. In May 1938, he initiated Organisation Todt, a military-engineering company that supplied industry with forced labour and administered construction of Nazi concentration camps. Mr. Todt was killed in a plane crash after departing the "Wolf's Lair," Fuehrer Adolf Hitler's residence in Rastenburg, East Prussia. Mr. Todt had recently inspected the Eastern Front and concluded that Germany couldn't win the war there. He had visited Mr. Hitler to recommend that he sue for peace with the U.S.S.R. Mr. Hitler rejected his proposal, leading to suspicion that the plane crash was an assassination ordered by Mr. Hitler; that has never been confirmed. Mr. Todt was succeeded as Reichsminister for Armaments and Munitions by Albert Speer.

George VI, 56. King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, 1936-1952; Emperor of India, 1936-1947. George VI, the second son of King George V, assumed the throne in December 1936 upon the abdication of his older brother Edward VIII. With his wife and Queen consort Elizabeth he led Britain through World War II. King George developed lung cancer, and died in his sleep at Sandringham House. He was succeeded by his eldest child, who became Queen Elizabeth II.

Kenne Duncan, 68. Canadian-born U.S. actor. A native of Chatham, Ontario, Mr. Duncan appeared in dozens of B-western movies and television shows, usually as a villain. His best-known movie was probably Revenge of the Dead, aka Night of the Ghouls (1960), written and directed by the legendary Edward D. Wood, Jr. A notorious drinker and womanizer whose nickname was "Horsecock," Mr. Duncan committed suicide in Hollywood with an overdose of barbiturates 12 days before his 69th birthday.

Born on this date
Anna Hedvig Büll. Estonian-born German missionary. Miss Büll was a Lutheran missionary to the Armenian people during the last years of the Ottoman Empire, and helped to save about 2,000 women and children from the Armenian genocide during World War I. She worked with Armenians for about 40 years, and became a refugee herself after her native Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union and she was denied permission to return. Miss Büll worked in France, Switzerland, and finally West Germany, where she died on October 3, 1981 at the age of 94.

Lisa Fonssagrives, 80. Swedish-born model. Mrs. Fonssagrives was an aspiring ballerina who moved to Paris in 1936 and became a fashion model. She moved to the United States in 1939, and continued to appear on magazine covers through the 1950s, earning recognition as the world's first supermodel. Mrs. Fonssagrives died in New York.

George Nader, 80. U.S. actor. Mr. Nader appeared in plays, films, and television programs from the early 1950s through the mid-'70s. He starred in the television adventure series The Man and the Challenge (1959-1960), but was probably best known for playing the male romantic lead in the movie Robot Monster (1953). He died after a period of declining health.

Mr. McReynolds was United States Attorney General in the administration of President Woodrow Wilson from 1913-1914, and was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1914-1941. He wrote over 506 opinions and was known for his opposition to the New Deal policies of President Franklin D. Roosevelt Mr. McReynolds died on August 24, 1946 at the age of 82.

Adam Vinatieri's 48-yard field goal on the last play of regulation time gave the Patriots their first Super Bowl championship (see video). Jeff Wilkins had given the Rams a 3-0 lead after the 1st quarter on a 50-yard field goal, but the Patriots scored touchdowns in the 2nd quarter on a 47-yard interception return by Ty Law and an 8-yard pass from Tom Brady to David Patten to take a 14-3 halftime lead. Mr. Vinatieri added a 37-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter to give New England a 17-3 lead. The Rams finally mounted a comeback in the 4th quarter when quarterback Kurt Warner rushed 2 yards for a touchdown and completed a pass to Ricky Proehl for a 26-yard touchdown, both converted by Mr. Wilkins. Mr. Brady completed 16 of 127 passes for just 145 yards, but was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Mr. Warner completed 28 of 44 passes for 365 yards.

Mr. Gear was a first baseman, outfielder, and pitcher with the Cleveland Spiders (1896-1897) and Washington Senators (1901), batting .239 with no home runs and 25 runs batted in in 69 games, compiling a pitching record of 4-13 with an earned run average in 27 games. He hit at least 17 homers in at least 1,452 games in 17 seasons in the minor leagues (1896-1914), compiling a pitching record of 55-37 in 5 seasons in the minors (1897-1898, 1902-1904). Mr. Gear was a lawyer, and remained in the minor leagues as an owner, executive, and manager through 1935. Mr. Gear died on September 23, 1951 at the age of 79.

John Tonkin. Australian politician. "Honest John," a member of the Labour Party, represented North-East Fremantle (1933-1950) and Melville (1950-1977) for a record total of 44 years in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. He held several cabinet posts, and was elected party leader in 1967, becoming Leader of the Opposition. Mr. Tonkin led Labour to electoral victory in 1971, and served as Premier of Western Australia until 1974, when Labour lost power in the state election. Mr. Tonkin resigned as W.A. Labour Party leader in 1976, and retired from politics in 1977. He died on October 20, 1995 at the age of 93.

Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California announced that they had discovered four and possibly six more small moons of Saturn when photographs taken by the Voyager 2 probe were analyzed. The discovery brought the total number of moons around Saturn to 21 or 23. Three of the four definite discoveries were found to be sharing orbits with the previously known satellites Mimas, Dione, and Tethys. The other two objects may have been moons, but photos were not clear enough to give positive identification. If they were moons, it meant that Tethys shared its orbit with four other moons. The four newly-discovered moons ranged in diameter from 6-12 miles, as compared with the moons of Saturn that could be seen by Earth’s telescopes, whose diameters ranged from 100 miles to the size of Titan, which is larger than the planet Mercury.

Henrique. King of Portugal, 1578-1580. Henrique, the fifth son of King Manuel I, became a Roman Catholic cardinal, and was Archbishop of Lisbon from 1564-1570. He served as regent for his great-nephew Sebastião from 1562-1568, and acceded to the throne upon King Sebastião's death in the Battle of Alcácer Quibir. King Henrique was unable to obtain a release from Pope Gregory XIII to take a bride in order to continue the Aziz dynasty, and died on January 31, 1580, his 68th birthday, without an heir, and without having appointed a successor. António, Prior of Crato and King Philip II of Spain both claimed the throne; Philip was elected King in 1581.

George Mantha scored 4 goals and added an assist as the Canadiens jumped to a 4-1 lead and held on to defeat the Black Hawks at the Montreal Forum. The Canadiens were badly shaken when Howie Morenz, who had rejoined the team before the start of the season and returned to the form that had made him one of the game's all-time greats during his first tour of duty in Montreal (1923-1934), caught the tip of his skate in the boards early in the first period and broke his leg in two places when he was hit by Chicago defenseman Earl Siebert, who was unable to avoid the collision. Mr. Morenz was taken from the ice on a stretcher and transported to St. Luke's Hospital.

U.S. astronaut John Glenn was aboard his Friendship 7 spacecraft, awaiting the beginning of the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, when the liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida was postponed because of heavy cloud cover. Flight director Chris Kraft called off the launch with the countdown at T minus 20 minutes. The mission finally took place on February 20, and Mr. Glenn became a national hero as the first human American to orbit Earth.

Mahalia Jackson, 60. U.S. singer. The "Queen of Gospel Song" was one of the most famous gospel singers in history, selling more than 22 million records in a career spanning more than 40 years, first achieving commercial success in 1947 with Move On Up a Little Higher. She virtually defined gospel blues and influenced several genres of music, but refused to sing anything but gospel. Miss Jackson performed internationally, and supported the Negro civil rights movement in the United States. She suffered from health problems for many years, and died while recovering from surgery to remove a bowel obstruction.

William Wrigley, Jr., 70 U.S. businessman. Mr. Wrigley founded the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company in Chicago in 1891 as a soap company, but switched to baking powder and evetually to chewing gum when those products proved more popular. He made a fortune, and played a major role in the development and preservation of Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Long Beach, Califonria. Mr. Wrigley became a minority owner of the Chicago Cubs baseball team in 1916, and became minority owner by 1921. Their home park was renamed Wrigley Field in 1927, two years after the opening of Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, home of the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League.

The extended play single Mister Twist by Tony Sheridan was officially handed over to the Bibliothèque nationale de France (National Library of France). The record, released as an EP only in France, consisted of the songs When the Saints; Cry for a Shadow; My Bonnie; and Why. Cry for a Shadow, written by George Harrison and John Lennon, was an instrumental performed by the Beatles, who accompanied Mr. Sheridan on the other tracks.
Space
The U.S.A. launched the satellite Ranger III, whose mission included transmitting photographs of the lunar surface for 10 minutes prior to crashing on the moon. Unfortunately, Ranger III missed the moon by 22,000 miles, and went into a heliocentric orbit, where it remains.

Leotis Martin (1-0) made his professional debut, winning a 4-round split decision over Bobby Warthen (3-1) in a heavyweight bout at Kenwick Terrace in Sarnia, Ontario.

John Donne. English clergyman and poet. Very Rev. Donne was born into a recusant Roman Catholic family, but eventually converted to Anglicanism. He was ordained an Anglican priest in 1615, and was Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London from 1621 until his death. Very Rev. Donne was known for his sermons, but was best known as the most prominent of the metaphysical poets, writing love poems, sonnets, religious poems, and satires. He died on March 31, 1631 at the age of 59.

Eduardo Frei Montalva, 71. 28th President of Chile, 1964-1970. Mr. Frei began his political career in the Conservative Party, but in 1938 co-founded the Falange Nacional, which became the Partido Demócrata Cristiano (Christian Democratic Party) (PDC) in 1957. He ran unsuccessfully for President in 1958, but was elected in 1964, defeating Socialist candidate Salvador Allende with the help of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. President Frei modernized his country and instituted numerous reforms. After Mr. Allende was elected President in 1970, Mr. Frei opposed his administration as a "totalitarian project" to establish Communist tyranny. Mr. Frei was elected to the Senate, representing Santiago, in March 1973, and was elected President of the Senate in May, leading the opposition to Mr. Allende. He supported the armed forces coup that ousted Mr. Allende in September 1973, even though the resulting junta led by General Augusto Pinochet dissolved the Senate on September 21. Mr. Frei later became an opponent of the junta, and opposed the extension of Gen. Pinochet's term as President in 1981. He died six days after his 71st birthday, ostensibly of septicaemia stemming from surgery for a hiatal hernia. It was alleged that Mr. Frei had been poisoned by the junta's secret police force DINA, and in 2009 it was ruled by Judge Alejandro Madrid that six accused individuals had administered toxic substances that weakened Mr. Frei's immune system and made him too weak to survive his surgery. Judge Madrid was overruled and suspended by the Appeals Court and the accused were released on bail, but the case was reopened in 2010, and the six accused were convicted in January 2019 and given prison sentences ranging from 3-10 years.

R. Budd Dwyer, 47. U.S. politician. Mr. Dwyer was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1971-1981, and was the Pennsylvania State Treasurer from 1981-1987. He had been convicted on a bribery charge and was due to be sentenced on January 23, but held a televised press conference, where he proclaimed his innocence. At the end of his statement, Mr. Dwyer handed an envelope to each of three associates, then took a handgun out of another envelope; despite protests from those in attendance, he put the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

Konrad Emil Bloch. German-born U.S. biochemist. Dr. Bloch was educated in his native Germany, but fled to Switzerland and then the United States in order to escape Nazi persecution of Jews. He taught at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and Harvard, and shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Feodor Lynen "for their discoveries concerning the mechanism and regulation of the cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism." Dr. Bloch died on October 15, 2000 at the age of 88.

Marie Prevost, 40. Canadian-born U.S. actress. Miss Prevost, born Marie Dunn in Sarnia, Ontario, starred in comedy short films for the Mack Sennett studio in the 1910s, and achieved success in several feature films directed by Ernst Lubitsch, including The Marriage Circle (1924); Three Women (1924); and Kiss Me Again (1925). Her career soon went into decline, and she drank herself to death.
