Paul Goodman, 61
. U.S. author. Dr. Goodman was a public intellectual who wrote fiction and poetry, but was primarily known for his works of social criticism, particularly Growing Up Absurd (1960). He was heavily influenced by psychoanalysis and gestalt therapy, and was perhaps the most prominent non-Marxist philosopher of the "New Left" of the 1960s, supporting anarchistic youth movements, although he admired traditional American values associated with Thomas Jefferson. Dr. Goodman was an open bisexual, and his homosexual activities frequently cost him jobs. He died of a heart attack, and is now largely forgotten.

Brian Cole, 29. U.S. musician. Mr. Cole played bass guitar and sang with The Association, whose hit singles included Along Comes Mary (1966); Cherish (1966); Windy (1967); Never My Love (1967); and Everything that Touches You (1968). He died of a heroin overdose in Los Angeles.

Diplomacy
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Libyan leader Colonel Muammar el-Gaddafi concluded three days of talks in Tobruk and Bengazi with an accord that would see the governments of the two countries unite by September 1, 1973. The proposed union, which would create the largest state in Africa, was seen as a move to provide money from oil-rich Libya for the Egyptian army to buy offensive weapons that the Soviets had refused to supply. The plan was subject to public referenda in each country, but the “final version” of the accord could be vetoed by the leaders of the two countries.

Law
In a letter to Czechoslovakian Communist party leader Gustav Husak, the International Commission of Jurists at Geneva called the trials resulting in the August 1 convictions of Milan Huebl (former adviser to ousted Premier Alexander Dubcek), Karl Kynci (former television commentator and New York correspondent for Prague radio), and Karel Bartosek (historian) for anti-state activities “a political purge” carried out “under the cover of legal proceedings.”
