Mr. Paige struck out 9 batters and gave up just 7 hits as he outduelled losing pitcher Virgil Trucks.

Quarterback Dave Sarette completed a 31-yard pass to Jack Gotta for a touchdown, and Reg Whitehouse added a convert and 3 field goals as the Roughriders beat the Stampeders at Taylor Field in Regina. Ed Buchanan rushed 5 yards for a Calgary touchdown. It was the first CFL game ever televised on CTV, with Al Shaver of CFRN in Edmonton calling the play-by-play and Henry Viney of CFCN in Calgary adding colour commentary.

Johnny Klippstein, who had entered the game in relief of starting pitcher Bob Purkey in the 11th inning, hit a home run in the top of the 13th inning to give the Cincinnati Reds a 1-0 win over the Houston Colt .45s at Colt Stadium in Houston.

The United States Labor Department reported that the unemployment rate had risen 0.3% in July to 9.8%, a post-World War II record. The number of people without jobs was pegged at 10,790,000; the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that there were another 1.5 million people who had given up looking for work and were not included in the unemployment figures.

Rookie quarterback Luc Tousignant, a native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, completed touchdown passes to Lester Brown in the 1st quarter and Nick Arakgi in the 2nd quarter as the Concordes upset the Tiger-Cats before 17,662 fans at Olympic Stadium. Hamilton Tom Clements scored his team’s only touchdown with a 1-yard rush in the 3rd quarter, but threw 5 interceptions, including 2 to safety Phil Jones.

Gerry Dattilio threw touchdown passes to Alton Alexis and Brett Davis as the Stampeders defeated the Rough Riders before 28,038 fans at McMahon Stadium. Middle linebacker Danny Bass scored the other Calgary touchdown on a 40-yard fumble return in the 4th quarter. Running back Skip Walker scored both Ottawa touchdowns, on a 52-yard pass from quarterback Chris Isaac in the 1st quarter and a 1-yard rush in the 3rd quarter. The Rough Riders scored a 2-point convert on their second touchdown when holder Jeff Avery fumbled the snap and was able to recover and complete a pass to fullback Jim Reid. Mr. Davis's touchdown was the only one he scored in his brief CFL career.

The Argonauts made 4 interceptions against former Toronto quarterback Matt Dunigan as they routed the Blue Bombers before a SkyDome crowd of 32,201. Don Wilson returned one of the interceptions 94 yards for a touchdown with 56 seconds left in the game. The other Toronto touchdowns were scored by Raghib “Rocket” Ismail on a 1-yard rush in the 2nd quarter and quarterback Rickey Foggie on a 1-yard rush in the 4th quarter.

Blake Marshall rushed 50 yards for a touchdown on a third-down short-yardage gamble in the 1st quarter and 1 yard for another TD in the 2nd quarter as the Eskimos defeated the Rough Riders before 25,113 fans at Commonwealth Stadium for their second win over Ottawa in as many weeks. Edmonton quarterback Tracy Ham completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jim Sandusky in the 4th quarter. The Rough Riders scored the first touchdown 3:29 into the game on a 22-yard pass from Tom Burgess to David Conrad, and the last TD on an 18-yard pass from Mr. Burgess to Mr. Conrad with 56 seconds remaining in the game.

Damon Allen completed 2 touchdown passes to Orville Lee and rushed 9 yards for the winning touchdown with 5:24 remaining in the game as the Tiger-Cats edged the Lions before 24,606 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. B.C. quarterback Tony Kimbrough threw touchdown passes of 43 and 12 yards to Kasey Dunn and another of 17 yards to Mike Trevathan. The Lions had a chance to tie the game, but kicker Lui Passaglia’s 52-yard field goal attempt was wide and went for a single point with 1 second remaining in regulation time. Mr. Kimbrough completed 30 of 56 passes for 456 yards, while Mr. Allen was 20 for 38 for 303 yards, and rushed 7 times for 59 yards.
