Toronto quarterback Tobin Rote was injured, and his substitute, veteran Tom Dublinski, completed a 12-yard pass to Ron Stover in the 3rd quarter for the Argonauts’ only touchdown. The loss was the first for the Argonauts under head coach Nobby Wirkowski, who had taken over after the firing of Lou Agase several days earlier.

An emergency session of Canada’s parliament ended with the passage of a bill ordering 3,200 longshoremen back to work after a 3-week strike on the coast of British Columbia.

Politics and government
Immediately after passage of the bill ordering B.C. longshoremen to end their strike, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau called a federal election for October 30.

Disasters
37 people died and another 50 were injured when a deliberately-set fire swept through the Wagon Wheel, a bar on the second floor, above the Blue Bird Cafe in Montreal.

Bobby Fischer, 29, won the world championship 12 1/2 to 8 1/2 when defending champion Boris Spassky of the U.S.S.R. resigned from the 21st game in the tournament in Reykjavik. Mr. Fischer became the first American to win the world championship since the title had been established in 1886. Mr. Fischer won 7 games in the tournament and earned a record $156,000 in prize money.

Olympics
Valery Borzov of the U.S.S.R. ran the men's 100-metre final in 10.14 seconds to win the gold medal. Robert Taylor of the U.S.A. won the silver medal.

Baseball
Charlie Spikes, playing his first major league game, had 2 hits, drove in a run, and made a run-saving catch in right field to help preserve Mel Stottlemyre's shutout as the New York Yankees blanked the Chicago White Sox 4-0.

Rod Carew stole home plate with 2 out in the 10th inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians. The Indians blew a 4-0 lead.

. Polish politician. Mr. Gomulka was First Secretary of the Polish Workers' Party (later known as the Polish United Workers' Party, i.e., Communist) and was the de facto leader of Poland from 1945-1948 and 1956-1970.

The last remaining Syrian troops and Palestine Liberation Organization guerrillas left Beirut, a week after U.S. Marines had landed in the city.

Diplomacy
U.S. President Ronald Reagan called for a fresh start in the Middle East peace process and urged full autonomy for Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip under Israeli occupation. He demanded the cessation of Israeli settlement and asked that Jordan supervise the Palestinians.

World events
23 trade union leaders were arrested in Manila, bringing to 38 the total number of people jailed or picked up for questioning since President Ferdinand Marcos had announced his discovery of a plot to disrupt the government.

Economics and finance
Mexican President Jose Lopez Portillo announced that the country’s private banks would be nationalized to end what he termed the “looting” of Mexico through the flight of capital. He added that exchange controls would be imposed and that banks would remain closed until September 6, when the Bank of Mexico would assume control of them. Mexican businessmen reacted with anger, and the head of the Bank of Mexico resigned in protest.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers claimed running back Kevin Cole on waivers from the Edmonton Eskimos. Mr. Cole, who made the team after veteran Jim Germany broke his ankle in the first pre-season game, was leading the Eskimos in rushing with 390 yards on 73 carries—a 5.3-yard average—and 4 touchdowns in 7 games. He had also caught 24 passes for 252 yards and 1 touchdown.

Health
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug to lower the level of cholesterol in the blood. The drug, lovastatin, would be sold by its developer, Merck & Company, under the trade name Mevacor. Medical experts warned that the drug, which could cost users $3,000 per year, was not a substitute for proper diet and exercise, but should be used only when diet and exercise failed to lower cholesterol levels.

Economics and finance
The United States Commerce Department reported that the index of leading economic indicators had risen 0.5% in July.

Humour
Dave Bresnahan, catcher for the Williamsport Bills in the Eastern League, slipped a shaved potato into his mitt after a time out during a game against Reading while Rick Rudblad of Reading was a runner on third base. On the next pitch, Mr. Bresnahan threw the potato wildly on a pickoff attempt, and tagged Mr. Rudblad with the real ball when he came to home plate. The umpire ruled the runner safe, charged Mr. Bresnahan with an error, and fined him $50. Mr. Bresnahan replied, "I thought it'd be a do-over." Mr. Bresnahan, who was hitting just .149 for the season, was released by the Bills' parent club, the Philadelphia Phillies, the next day.

Baseball
The Boston Red Sox traded designated hitter Don Baylor to the Minnesota Twins and outfielder Dave Henderson to the San Francisco Giants for players to be named later. Mr. Baylor was batting .239 with 16 home runs and 57 runs batted in in 108 games with Boston in 1987, while Mr. Henderson was batting .234 with 8 homers and 25 RBIs in 75 games with the Red Sox.

Morris Carnovsky, 94
. U.S. actor. Mr. Carnovsky acted in Yiddish theatre and on Broadway before going to Hollywood and appearing in such movies as The Life of Emile Zola (1937); Edge of Darkness (1943); Rhapsody in Blue (1945); Cornered (1945); Dead Reckoning (1947); and Gun Crazy (1950). He was blacklisted by the movie industry when he refused to name names of Communists before the U.S. House of Representatives Un-American Activities Committee, and returned to Broadway.

Winnipeg quarterback Khari Jones handed off to Mike Sellers for a 1-yard touchdown rush in the 1st quarter and completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Milt Stegall in the 2nd quarter. The touchdown was Mr. Stegall’s 11th of the season. The Roughriders outscored the Blue Bombers 22-4 in the 2nd half.
