Ebba St. Claire, 61. U.S. baseball player. Mr. St. Claire was a catcher with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves (1951-1953) and New York Giants (1954), batting .249 with 7 home runs and 40 runs batted in in 164 games. He played 10 seasons in the minor leagues (1942, 1945-1958), and died 17 days after his 61st birthday. Mr. St. Claire's son Randy was a major league pitcher (1984-1994).

Joe Paopao threw 3 touchdown passes and Roy Dewalt added another as the Lions routed the Concordes before 15,208 fans at Olympic Stadium. Steve Kearns, John Pankratz, and Merv Fernandez were on the receiving end of Mr. Paopao’s touchdown passes, and Mr. Pankratz, who caught 4 passes for 115 yards, caught Mr. Dewalt’s touchdown pass. John Henry White rushed 11 yards for the game’s first touchdown, and teammate Larry key rushed 14 times for 127 yards and a touchdown for the Lions. The Concordes’ scoring came on 3 field goals by Don Sweet. It was the only Canadian Football League game for Montreal defensive back Glen Music, who had played with the Edmonton Eskimos in pre-season after an outstanding collegiate career with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Joseph P. Lash, 77. U.S. journalist and author. Mr. Lash, a socialist with Communist sympathies who eventually renounced Communism, won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1972 for Eleanor and Franklin: The Story of their Relationship, Based on Eleanor Roosevelt's Private Papers (1971). A second volume of his biography of Mrs. Roosevelt, titled Eleanor: The Years Alone, was published in 1972.
