Eduard Franck
. German musician and composer. Mr. Franck was a classical pianist and music teacher, whose compositions included four symphonies, and numerous chamber and keyboard works. He wasn't as well known as some of his contemporaries, perhaps because many of his works weren't published until late in his life, which ended on December 1, 1893 at the age of 76.

William B. Washburn, 67
. U.S. politician. Mr. Washburn, a moderate Republican, sat in the Massachusetts Senate (1850) and House of Representatives (1853-1855). He represented the state's 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives (1863-1871), leaving that office to serve as Governor of Massachusetts (1872-1874). Mr. Washburn was then appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Charles Sumner. He represented Massachusetts in the Senate from April 17, 1874 until the end of Mr. Sumner's term on March 3, 1875, and refused to run for office again. Mr. Washburn held various academic posts, and supported numerous Christian missionary societies.

Stinson, Kelly, and Babe Reynolds scored touchdowns for the Winged Wheelers as they defeated the Argonauts before 2,000 fans at the MAAA Grounds in the first game of the recently-founded Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU). Mr. Flett's 30-yard field goal was the biggest scoring play for the Argonauts, who failed to score a touchdown. Mr. Reynolds' 65-yard touchdown rush in the 4th quarter clinched the victory, just when it seemed as though Toronto had a chance to win the game.

Dundas Rugby Club announced its withdrawal from the Ontario Rugby Football Union over the ORFU executive's refusal to let Mr. Gillespie play for Dundas despite fulfillment of the residency requirements.

Baseball
The Philadelphia Athletics swept a doubleheader from the Washington Nationals 4-2 and 4-0 at Columbia Park in Philadelphia. In the second game, Philadelphia's Rube Vickers was pitching a perfect game after 5 innings when the game was called because of darkness.

. U.S. television personality. Mr. Ludden, born Allen Ellsworth, hosted several game shows, but was best known as the host of various versions of Password from 1961-1980. He was married to actress Betty White from 1963 until his death from stomach cancer on June 9, 1981 at the age of 63.

. Polish-born U.S. movie director, producer, and screenwriter. Mr. Warner, born Schmuel Wonsal or Wonsklolaser, co-founded Warner Brothers Studios with brothers Harry, Albert, and Jack L. Sam was credited with promoting the technology behind The Jazz Singer (1927), but died of pneumonia caused by sinusitis, osteomyelitis and epidural and subdural abscesses, the day before the movie's premiere.

Representatives of Communist Parties from nine eastern European countries concluded a secret conference in Poland by establishing a Communist Information Bureau (Cominform) in Belgrade to "organize and exchange experiences and...coordinate the activity of Communist parties." State Assembly elections in the Saar resulted in a large victory for candidates favouring economic affiliation with France.

The Italian Constituent Assembly gave Prime Minister Alcide de Gasperi a vote of confidence after a debate over the country's economic condition.

In the first televised address from the White House, U.S. President Harry Truman asked Americans to refrain from eating meat on Tuesdays and poultry on Thursdays to help stockpile grain for starving people in Europe.

José Leandro Andrade, 55
. Uruguayan soccer player. Mr. Andrade, nicknamed "la maravilla negra" (The Black Marvel), played wing-half with six senior Uruguayan clubs (1921-1934), scoring 39 goals in 284 games. He scored 1 goal in 34 international matches (1923-1930), helping Uruguay win gold medals in the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympic Games, and the first World Cup in 1930. Mr. Andrade developed syphilis during his playing career, and fell on hard times in later years, taking to drink and dying in poverty in an asylum.

Argentine authorities arrested 270 labour leaders who were supporters of former President Juan Peron.

Former Yugoslavian Vice President Milovan Djilas was sentenced to an extra seven years in prison for smuggling his book The New Country out of the country for publication in the United States.

University of California geologist Warren Kaufman revealed plans for the disposal of radioactive wastes by injecting them into deep formations below useful water levels.

C.C. Williams, 35
. U.S. astronaut. Clifton Curtis Williams, Jr. was a major in the United States Marine Corps, and was one of 14 men selected in the third group of astronauts in 1963. When Alan Bean was moved to the Apollo Applications program (eventually known as Skylab), Major Williams was moved into Mr. Bean's position as Lunar Module Pilot for the lunar landing mission that eventually became Apollo 12. Major Williams was killed when the T-38 jet he was flying experienced a mechanical failure and crashed near Tallahassee, Florida. His position on the Apollo crew was taken by Mr. Bean, who was moved from Apollo Applications back into his old position. The Apollo 12 crew commemorated Major Williams by including a fourth star on the Apollo 12 flight patch, and his naval aviator wings were left on the surface of the Moon by Mr. Bean and Apollo 12 Commander Pete Conrad in November 1969.

Eddie Kendrick(s), 52
. U.S. singer. Mr. Kendrick (he added the "s" in the early 1960s and then dropped it in the '80s) was a member of the Temptations from 1961-1971. His high voice was featured on the lead vocal of many of their hits, especially ballads such as 1971's Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me). Mr. Kendricks left the group to begin a solo career; his hits included Keep On Truckin', which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. Mr. Kendrick rejoined the Temptations for a reunion album in 1982 and performed with former bandmate David Ruffin for several years. Mr. Kendrick died of lung cancer.

Brian Pillman, 35
. U.S.-born football player and wrestler. Mr. Pillman, known as "Flyin' Brian" during his professional wrestling career, was a nose tackle at Miami University of Ohio before playing briefly with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1984, and playing three games at linebacker with the Calgary Stampeders in 1986. He wasn't good enough to be a starter with the Stampeders, but he impressed people with his agility, and was invited to join the Calgary-based Stampede Wrestling circuit. Mr. Pillman wrestled with Stampede Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling, Extreme Championship Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Federation through the 1990s. Injuries and the resulting pain began to take a toll on him, and he died of a heart attack caused by a previously undiagnosed heart condition, hours before he was scheduled to participate in a match in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Rickey Foggie passed for 498 yards to lead the Tiger-Cats over the Blue Bombers before 14,987 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Hamilton led 27-12 with 10 minutes remaining, but mounted a comeback, and only a failed 2-point convert attempt prevented the game from going into overtime. It was the only CFL game for Johnnie Johnson, who dressed as a backup quarterback for the Tiger-Cats.

The Stampeders led the Eskimos 28-6 in the 3rd quarter before 31,572 fans on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Commonwealth Stadium, but Edmonton quarterback Danny McManus rallied his team to a 32-32 tie late in the 4th quarter. Calgary kicker Mark McLoughlin attempted a game-winning field goal on the final play of regulation time, but Edmonton defensive back Kavis Reed partially blocked the kick, with no points resulting. Don Blair caught his second touchdown pass of the game from Mr. McManus at 3:32 of the 1st overtime period to put the Eskimos ahead to stay.
