Tom Wilkinson completed a 78-yard touchdown pass to Don Warrington to help the Eskimos defeat the Roughriders in an entertaining game before 22,452 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Edmonton kicker Dave Cutler kicked 3 field goals, including one from 54 yards, but two attempts that he missed were more memorable. With a strong wind behind him, Mr. Cutler attempted a field goal from 71 yards, and it hit the crossbar; a few minutes later, he just missed from 64 yards. The league record at the time for the longest field goal was 59 yards, kicked by Mr. Cutler in Taylor Field on October 28, 1970. The Roughriders mounted a late comeback and almost pulled out a victory, and the Eskimos almost lost on the last play; they had the ball with third down deep in their own end of the field, and put Larry Highbaugh in the end zone to accept the snap in punt formation, with the intention of having him run out the clock before conceding a safety touch. The snap was low, and Mr. Highbaugh had trouble gaining possession, and did so just before a Saskatchewan player could recover for what would have been a game-winning touchdown. Saskatchewan quarterback Ron Lancaster suffered a season-ending knee injury.
