Fushimi, 52. Emperor of Japan, 1287-1298. Fushimi, born Hirohito-shinnō, was the second son of Emperor Go-Fukakusa, and succeeded his cousin Go-Uda on the throne. Fushimi abdicated in favour of his son Go-Fushimi.

Born on this date
Marina Tsvetaeva. Russian poetess. Miss Tsvetaeva is regarded as one of Russia's greatest lyric poets. Her husband Sergei Efron joined the White Army in the Russian Civil War, and she and their two daughters suffered economic hardships, and the youngest daughter died of hunger. Miss Tsvetaeva and her family fled Russia for Paris in 1922, eventually settling there from 1925-1939. Mr. Efron and their daughter Alya developed Soviet sympathies, and Sergei became an NKVD agent. They were arrested for espionage in 1941; Mr. Efron was executed by shooting, aand Alya Efron served eight years in prison. Miss Tsvetaeva, reportedly under pressure to work for the NKVD, committed suicide by hanging herself on August 31, 1941 at the age of 58.

The Cubs trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the 9th inning before 24,377 fans at West Side Park, but scored a run and had Harry Steinfeldt on third base when Detroit pitcher Wild Bill Donovan struck out pinch hitter Del Howard for what should have been the final out of the game. However, catcher Charlie Schmidt allowed the third strike to get by him for what was then scored as an error, allowing Mr. Steinfeldt to score the tying run. The teams played 3 more innings before umpire Hank O'Day called the game on account of darkness, resulting in the first tie in World Series history.

Born on this date
Danny Murtaugh. U.S. baseball player and manager. Mr. Murtaugh was a second baseman with the Philadelphia Phillies (1941-1943, 1946); Boston Braves (1947); and Pittsburgh Pirates (1948-1951), batting .254 with 8 home runs and 219 runs batted in in 767 games. He had four different stints as manager of the Pirates from 1957-1976, compiling a record of 1,115-950, and leading them to World Series championships in 1960 and 1971. Mr. Murtaugh suffered from health problems for years and died of a stroke on December 2, 1976 at the age of 59, two months after managing his last game, after already announcing his retirement. This blogger saw the Pirates play in person under Mr. Murtaugh four months before his death.

Rodney Robert Porter. U.K. biochemist. Dr. Porter shared the 1972 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Gerald Edelman "for their discoveries concerning the chemical structure of antibodies." Dr. Porter was killed in a car accident on September 6, 1985 at the age of 67.

Mary Webb, 46. U.K. authoress and poetess. Mrs. Webb was a romantic novelist and poet who wrote about people in the countryside of Shropshire, England in novels such as The Golden Arrow (1916) and Gone to Earth (1917). She suffered from Graves' disease, a thyroid disorder, which may have contributed to her death.

Effie Ellsler, 87. U.S. actress. Miss Ellsler was a leading actress on stage, and later, screen in a career spanning more than 75 years, beginning at the age of 3. Her stage roles included the title role in Hazel Kirke in the early 1880s and the lead role in her last Broadway play, The Bat (1920-1922). Miss Ellsler appeared in more than 20 movies, including Old Ironsides (1926); The Front Page (1931); and Camille (1936). She died three weeks after her 87th birthday, after a short illness.

The German government reported that its tactics at Stalingrad would be changed from storming he city to systematically destroying it by artillery fire.

Clement Attlee, 84. Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 1945-1951. Mr. Attlee, a member of the Labour Party, was first elected to the House of Commons in 1922, and held cabinet posts in the government of Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald in 1924 and 1931. He led the Labour Party from 1935-1955, and joined the warime coalition government of Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1940. Labour withdrew from the coalition after the defeat of Germany in May 1945, and won an upset victory over Mr. Churchill's Conservatives in the July 1945 general election. Mr. Attlee presided over Indian independence and the introduction of the welfare state in Britain, while pursuing a foreign policy of opposition to Soviet expansion.
He resigned as Labour Party leader and Leader of the Opposition after the 1955 general election, and sat in the House of Lords as Earl Attlee and Viscount Prestwood.

Konstantinos Tsatsos, 88. 2nd President of Greece, 1975-1980. Mr. Tsatsos was a member of the Liberal Party and then the National Radical Union, holding several cabinet posts in the years before the 1967-1974 military junta. Mr. Tsatsos returned to politics as a member of New Democracy, and was President by the parliament; he retired after serving his five-year term.

War
U.S. helicopter gunships sank three Iranian patrol boats in the Persian Gulf, killing at least two Iranians. At least one of the boats had fired on a patrolling helicopter.

Diplomacy
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega called on the United States government to enter direct talks with his government.

Rev. Jerry Falwell resigned as chairman of the PTL television “ministry” and the entire board of directors also resigned, more than six months after Rev. Falwell had taken the reins at the request of the “ministry’s” founder, Jim Bakker, when Mr. Bakker had become entangled in a sex scandal. The resignations of Rev. Falwell and the board came the day after a U.S. federal bankruptcy court rejected a reorganization plan submitted by Rev. Falwell, and ordered creditors of PTL to submit their own plan.

The Pioneer Venus Orbiter, which had been orbiting Venus since December 4, 1978, plunged into the planet’s atmosphere with most of its instruments still operating.

Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn unveiled the $2.8-million peacekeeping monument on a traffic island in Ottawa. The monument, titled Reconciliation, honoured 90,000 Canadians who served, 80 who had died on duty since 1947.

Politics and government
Native leaders in Manitoba urged their people to vote against the Charlottetown Accord on October 26, stating that their existing treaty rights would be eroded by the constitutional agreement. Assembly of First Nations Grand Chief Ovide Mercredi countered their argument, saying that their concern was based on an outdated copy of the legal text.

Former Saskatchewan Premier Grant Devine announced that he was leaving politics to return to his teaching job at the University of Saskatchewan.
