Henri I
. King of Haiti, 1811-1820; President of Haiti, 1807-1811. Henri Christophe, born Christopher Henry, was a slave who became a leader in the Haitian Revolution. He was elected President in 1807 and proclaimed himself King in 1811. He was unpopular, ill, and fearful of a coup when he committed suicide by shooting himself with a silver bullet on October 8, 1720, two days after his 53rd birthday.

Siegmund Glücksmann, 58
. Austro-Hungarian born Polish politician. Mr. Glücksmann, of Jewish-German ethnicity, was a prominent member of the Jewish Social Democratic Party, representing the more Marxist-oriented wing of the movement. Shortly after the Soviet invasion of Poland early in World War II, Mr. Glücksmann and his family were deported to Yoshkar Ola, Russia, but in the fall of 1941 were allowed to move to Bukhara, Uzbekistan, where he died of typhoid.

The last group of Japanese-Canadian internees detained at Hastings Park internment camp left Vancouver for camps in the British Columbia interior. The October Matanikau action on Guadalcanal began as United States Marine Corps forces attacked Imperial Japanese Army units along the Matanikau River.

Hamilton Tigers' quarterback Frank Filchock, whose eligibility to play was a matter of dispute, was named the team's coach after the resignation of Andy Mullen because of ill health and inability to motivate the players. Mr. Filchock had been with the New York Giants in 1946, but had been expelled from the National Football League for failure to report the offer of a bribe before the NFL championship game against the Chicago Bears. Mr. Filchock had already played several games with the Tigers, and he soon returned to the playing ranks after the IRFU ruled him eligible to play.

The Yankees tied the game in the top of the 9th on a 3-run homer by Elston Howard to tie the score, and scored a run in the top of the 10th to take a 5-4 lead. Pinch hitter Nippy Jones led off the bottom of the inning, and was awarded first base after showing home plate umpire Augie Donatelli a smudge of shoe polish on the ball, showing that he had been hit by a pitch. Felix Mantilla went in to run for Mr. Jones, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Red Schoendienst, and scored the tying run on a double by Johnny Logan. Eddie Mathews then hit a 2-run homer to end the game.

Johnny Vander Meer, 82
. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Vander Meer played with the Cincinnati Reds (1937-1943, 1946-1949); Chicago Cubs (1950); and Cleveland Indians (1951), compiling a record of 119-121 with an earned run average of 3.44 in 346 games. He's best remembered for becoming the first--and so far, only--man in major league history to pitch two consecutive no-hitters, beating the Boston Bees 3-0 at Crosley Field in Cincinnati on June 11, 1938, and duplicating the feat four days later with a 6-0 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers in the first night game ever played at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Mr. Vander Meer was a member of the Reds' World Series championship team in 1940.
