Li Siyuan
. Emperor of China, 926-933. Li Siyuan, whose name was later changed to Li Dan, was born Miaojilie, the son of a military general. He succeeded Li Cunxu on the throne after Li Cunxu was killed in a battle against mutineers. Li Siyuan died on December 15, 933 at the age of 67, 10 days after falling ill. He was succeeded as Emperor by Li Conghou (Emperor Min).

Bill Killefer
. U.S. baseball player, coach, and manager. Mr. Killefer was a catcher with the St. Louis Browns (1909-1910); Philadelphia Phillies (1911-1917); and Chicago Cubs (1918-1921), batting .238 with 4 home runs and 240 runs batted in in 1,035 games. He was regarded as one of the best defensive catchers of his time, and was with the Phillies when they won the National League pennant in 1915 and the Cubs when they won the NL pennant in 1918, batting .111 with 2 runs batted in in 7 World Series games. Mr. Killefer managed the Cubs (1921-1925) and Browns (1930-1933), compiling a record of 524-622. He coached with the St. Louis Cardinals (1926); Browns (1927-1929); Brooklyn Dodgers (1939); and Phillies (1942), and was with the Cardinals when they won the World Series. He died from hemorrhaging of the digestive tract on July 3, 1960 at the age of 72.

Thelonious Monk
. U.S. musician. Mr. Monk was a jazz pianist and composer who was known for a unique improvisational style and works such as Round Midnight; Blue Monk; and Straight, No Chaser. He was highly regarded by fellow musicians, but his recordings didn't sell particularly well. Mr. Monk was active from the 1940s through the 1960s, but retreated into isolation for most of his later years until his death from a stroke on February 17, 1982 at the age of 64.

Gustave Whitehead, 53
. German-born U.S. aviation engineer. Mr. Whitehead, born Gustave Weisskopf, moved to the United States in 1893. He was reported to have made powered flights before the Wright brothers, but the claims are disputed. Mr. Whitehead also built engines, and died after suffering a heart attack while attempting to lift an engine out of an automobile he was repairing.

Theatre
Porgy by Dorothy and DuBose Heyward, directed by Rouben Mamoulian, and starring Frank Wilson, Evelyn Ellis, and Jack Carter, opened at the Guild Theatre on Broadway in New York. It was the first Broadway play directed by Mr. Mamoulian.

Politics and government
The Conservative Party of Canada's first leadership convention ever opened at the Amphitheatre Rink in Winnipeg. Former Prime Minister Robert Borden delivered the first speech and was warmly received. Arthur Meighen, who had succeeded Mr. Borden as party leader and Prime Minister in 1920 but had announced his resignation after failing to achieve electoral success, delivered the next speech; he insisted on defending policies that had proven unpopular two years earlier, and received a hostile reaction from many of those in attendance, killing any possible hope that he would succeed himself as leader. The next speaker was Ontario Premier Howard Ferguson, regarded as a leading contender for the leadership. He promptly denounced Mr. Meighen's speech, thus incurring a hostile reaction of his own, and finishing his chances of winning the leadership.

Lefty Gomez scattered 10 hits, singled in the winning run in the 5th inning, and came around to score the insurance run as he won his second game of the series and the fifth World Series game of his career. The Yankees became the first team to play an entire World Series without making an error. Myril Hoag and Joe DiMaggio hit home runs for the Yankees before 38,216 fans at the Polo Grounds. Cliff Melton started on the mound for the Giants and took his second loss of the series.

Australian troops made contact with Japanese forces in the Owen Stanley Mountain in the Myola-Templeton Crossing area of New Guinea for the first time in several days. U.S. Army heavy bombers had launched three days of attacks on Kiska in the Aleutians without losing a plane or encountering opposition.

Economics and finance
12 Latin American nations, along with British Guiana, Honduras, and Trinidad and Tobago, agreed to sell all their rubber above essential needs to the United States and to expand production.

The U.S. Senate passed and sent to conference the largest tax bill in American history, designed to raise $8.525 billion.

Premier Dalton McGuinty's Liberal Party won a second consecutive majority in the Ontario provincial election. The Liberals won 71 of 107 seats in the Provincial Parliament, a decrease of one from the most recent election. The Progressive Conservatives, led by John Tory, were second with 26 seats--an increase of two from 2003--and the New Democratic Party, led by Howard Hampton, won 10 seats, an increase of three from 2003. There were four more seats in 2007 than in 2003.
