. King of England and Ireland, 1547-1553. The son of King Henry VIII and Queen Jane Seymour was born at Hampton Court. He succeeded his father as King, and established Protestantism in England. King Edward VI fell terminally ill at the age of 15, and died at the age of 16 on July 6, 1553. He had arranged for his cousin Lady Jane Grey, a Protestant, to succeed him on the throne, but she was deposed after nine days and succeeded by Edward's older sister Mary I, a Roman Catholic.

William Annand, 78
. Canadian journalist and politician. Mr. Annand, a native of Halifax, was a Reform Party member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1836-1843. After being defeated for re-election in 1843, he acquired Joseph Howe's newspaper Novascotian, and founded the Morning Chronicle in 1844. Mr. Annand served in the N.S. House again from 1851-1867. He was defeated for re-election in 1867, but became Premier after he was appointed to the Legislative Council. Mr. Annand resigned as Premier in 1875; he then went to London as Canada's agent-general, and later served as agent for Nova Scotia.

Japanese ships retreated after their defeat in the Battle of Cape Esperance. Nat Pendleton, 72
. U.S. wrestler and actor. Mr. Pendleton won a silver medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, losing a hotly-disputed decision in the gold medal match. He wrestled professionally for several years before moving into acting. Mr. Pendleton appeared in more than 90 movies from the mid-1920s through the late 1940s, often playing dumb criminals or policemen. He played ambulance driver Joe Wayman in nine Dr. Kildare films (1938-1943). Mr. Pendleton died of a heart attack.

. U.S. politician. Mr. Landon, an oil executive, was Governor of Kansas from 1933-1937. He was the Republican party nominee for President of the United States in 1936, but lost to incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt in one of the most lopsided results in U.S. electoral history. Mr. Landon won only in Maine and Vermont, for a total of 8 electoral votes to 523 for Mr. Roosevelt, who was seeking his second term as President.

Fahri Korutürk, 84. 6th President of Turkey, 1973-1980. Admiral Korutürk was a career naval officer who served as Commander of the Turkish Navy from 1957-1960. He served as Turkey's Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1960-1964) and to Spain (1964-1965) before being appointed to the Senate in 1968, where he returned after serving his seven-year term as President.

Walter Brattain, 85. U.S. physicist and inventor. Dr. Brattain, with John Bardeen and William Shockley, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1956 for the invention of the transistor.

He spent much of his time in later years in humanitarian and environmental activities. Mr. Denver was the son of a renowned U.S. Air Force pilot, and Mr. Denver shared his father's interest in aviation. He was killed when he crashed his experimental plane into Monterey Bay, California.
