Arlie Latham hit a home run and acted as the pivot man in a triple play to help the Browns defeat the Wolverines in a game that was played in the morning before 1,261 fans at the Swampdoodle Grounds after being rained out the day before. Curt Welch also homered for the Browns, while Hardy Richardson homered for the Wolverines. Bob Caruthers (3-3) won the pitching matchup over Charlie Getzein (3-2).

Detroit Wolverines 13 St. Louis Browns 3 @ Baltimore (Detroit led 15-game series 8-3)

The Wolverines scored 3 runs in the 4th inning, 4 in the 5th, and 4 in the 6th as they defeated the Browns before 2,707 fans at Union Park in a game that was played in the afternoon. Each team made 7 errors. Lady Baldwin (3-0) won the pitching matchup over Dave Foutz (0-3).

U.K. Foreign Secretary said that captured Nazi official Rudolf Hess was considered a prisoner of war and his immediate trial as a war criminal was not contemplated. Russian troops repulsed Nazi attacks in Stalingrad and in the Mozdok area of the Caucasus. Major General Mark Clark and seven other U.S. Army officers left on a secret trip to the North African coast to gather political and military information to prepare for Allied landings. Attacking for the first time since landing reinforcements, Japanese forces were repulsed on the western flank of the American line on Guadalcanal.

South African Prime Minister Jan Smuts addressed the British Parliament, saying that the German Army was being bled to death by the Russians and that Russia was bearing "more than her share of the common burden."



Attorney General Gordon Conant was sworn in as Premier of Ontario, succeeding Mitchell Hepburn, who had resigned. Mr. Hepburn announced that he would remain leader of the Liberal Party.

John and Elsie Mehrtens of Edmonton were fined $60 for hoarding 69 pounds of coffee and 1 pound of tea in violation of Canadian rationing regulations in force during World War II.

The Cardinals broke a 1-1 tie with 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning before 55,347 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium. The key hit was a 3-run home run by third baseman Tom Lawless, who had hit just .080 (2 for 25) during the regular season; the homer was just the second of his major league career. Bob Forsch, who relieved starting pitcher Greg Mathews with 2 out in the 4th inning, pitched 2 2/3 innings and was credited with the win. Frank Viola lasted just 3 1/3 innings in taking the loss.

Jim Garrison, 70
. U.S. attorney. Mr. Garrison was the District Attorney for New Orleans Parish from 1961-1973. He was known for investigating the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and his efforts resulted in charges against New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw, who was acquitted. Mr. Garrison's book On the Trail of the Assassins (1988) provided some of the inspiration for the movie JFK (1991). Mr. Garrison died of cancer, 30 days befere his 71st birthday.

Personal
As I was driving to Edmonton from Enoch in the afternoon, I saw a bald eagle. I'd never seen one in person before or since, and it was a beautiful sight.
