The fire was fanned by a hard wind from the west, which blew sparks onto neighbouring shingle roofs, tinder dry after a month of no rain. Work was being done on the water mains, and water pressure was not fully restored until late the next day. Over 10,000 were left homeless as almost 60% of the city was destroyed.
