Alexander H. Bailey. U.S. politician. Mr. Bailey was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1849 and the New York State Senate from 1862-1865, and then represented New York's 21st District in the United States House of Representatives from 1867-1871. He was a judge of the Oneida County Court from 1871 until his death on April 20, 1874 at the age of 56.

Born on this date
Cupid Childs. U.S. baseball player. Clarence Childs was a second baseman with the Phialdelphia Quakers (1888); Syracuse Stars (1890); Cleveland Spiders (1891-1898); St. Louis Perfectos (1899); and Chicago Orphans (1900-1901), batting .306 with 20 home runs and 743 runs batted in in 1,457 games. He led the National League with 136 runs in 1892, and was near the top in bases on balls nearly every year, amassing a career total of 991. Mr. Childs drank himself to death at the age of 45 on November 8, 1912 at the age of 45.
John Galsworthy. U.K. author. Mr. Galsworthy was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his distinguished art of narration, which takes its highest form in The Forsyte Saga," a trilogy of novels published from 1906-1921. He died of a brain tumour on January 31, 1933 at the age of 65.

The North-West Territorial Council passed an ordinance "For the Protection of the Buffalo" in an attempt to slow the destruction of the herds. It became unlawful to drive the buffalo into ravines or pits where they could be easily killed, or to hunt or kill buffalo for amusement, or solely to secure their tongues and pelts; The ordinance closed the season on female buffalo, extending from November 15 until August 14 each year.

The Detroit Tigers routed the St. Louis Browns 16-1 and 20-7 in a doubleheader sweep at Navin Field in Detroit. Eldon Auker, the winning pitcher in the first game, helped his own cause by hitting 2 home runs and batting in 5 runs. The Tigers hit 6 homers in the second game, with Charlie Gehringer batting 5 for 5 with 2 home runs, a double, 3 runs, and 6 runs batted in.
Pinch hitter Frankie Pytlak tripled home Odell Hale with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Cleveland Indians edged the Chicago White Sox 4-3 at League Park in Cleveland. Johnny Allen allowed 6 hits and 3 earned runs in 7 innings to improve his record for the season to 5-0.
Jim Turner pitched a 3-hitter to improve his 1937 record to 12-8 and scored the game's final run as the Boston Bees shut out the Brooklyn Dodgers 3-0 before 2,426 fans at National League Park in Boston.

First prize money was $45,000.

Mark McGwire set a major league record for rookies with his 39th home run of the season, off Don Sutton in the 6th inning, to help the Oakland Athletics defeat the California Angels 7-6 in 12 innings before 36,616 fans at Anaheim Stadium. The Athletics scored the winning run when Tony Bernazard doubled with 2 out and scored on a single by Mike Davis.
Shane Mack drove in 5 runs with a home run, triple, and sacrifice fly, and Randy Ready added 4 RBIs with a double and 2 singles to help the San Diego Padres defeat the Cincinnati Reds 15-8 before 32,080 fans at Jack Murphy-San Diego Stadium. Nick Esasky hit a 3-run homer to give the Reds a 3-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning, but the Padres scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, 4 in the 3rd, and 5 in the 4th to take an 11-2 lead.

John Sirica, 88. U.S. judge. Known as "Maximum John" because of his harsh sentences, Mr. Sirica was Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He became famous for presiding over the trials of many of those accused in the break-in of the Democratic National Committee offices in the Watergate office complex in Washington. Mr. Sirica was named Time magazine's Man of the Year for 1973.
Tony Williams, 64. U.S. singer. Mr. Williams was the lead singer of the Platters from 1953-1960, when they were one of the most popular groups in North America. Their hit singles included Only You; The Great Pretender; My Prayer; Twilight Time; and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.

Lonnie Smith had 5 hits and drove in 6 runs as the Atlanta Braves routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 15-0 before 38,595 fans at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Tom Glavine pitched his 5th shutout of the season to improve his record to 18-3.

The Yankees loaded the bases with 1 out in the 9th, but Roberto Hernandez struck out Bernie Williams and retired Roberto Kelly on a popup to end the game.
Jim Gantner led off the bottom of the 13th inning with a home run to give the Milwaukee Brewers an 8-7 win over the Boston Red Sox in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader before 25,598 fans at County Stadium in Milwaukee. The Red Sox scored 2 runs after the first 2 batters made outs in the top of the 12th and retired the first 2 batters in the bottom of the inning, but the Brewers rallied with 3 straight hits to tie the game. Robin Yount singled home Kevin Seitzer with 2 out in the bottom of the 1st in the second game, and it held up for a 1-0 Milwaukee win to complete the sweep as Cal Eldred allowed 3 hits in 8 innings to win the pitchers' duel over Greg Harris.
