Baseball
In a Pacific Coast League game between the San Diego Padres and Sacramento Solons at Edmonds Field in Sacramento, umpire Jack Powell was arrested on the field during the 6th inning for drunkenness. The arrest was made after Mr. Powell had called a Sacramento runner out at second base in the 5th inning although the San Diego second baseman had dropped the ball. The Padres won the game 8-6, and the Solons protested the game.

Allied troops landed at Dieppe, on the French coast northwest of Paris, sustaining heavy casualties. About 4,100 of the 6,100-man landing force were killed, wounded or captured by Nazi forces. About 1,000 of those killed were Canadians; Germany sustained 591 casualties. Evidence has now come to light revealing the possible actual purpose of the raid.

Baseball
The Houston Astros released pitcher Barry Latman, ending his 11-year major league career. He was 3-6 with an earned run average of 4.52 in 39 games with Houston in 1967. For his career, he was 59-68 with a 3.91 ERA and 16 saves in 344 games.

The Boston Red Sox withstood a 4-run 9th-inning rally to defeat the California Angels 12-11 before 24,117 fans at Fenway Park in Boston. Carl Yastrzemski led the Boston attack, batting 4 for 5 with a home run, double, 4 runs, and 2 runs batted in. Pinch hitter Norm Siebern tripled home 3 more Boston runs in the 7th. Roger Repoz and Jimmie Hall homered for California in the 9th, and the Angels had runners on first and third bases with 2 out, but Buck Rodgers grounded out to second baseman Mike Andrews to end the game.

Dave Boswell pitched a 3-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Bill Monbouquette as the Minnesota Twins edged the New York Yankees 1-0 before 36,787 fans at Yankee Stadium. Ted Uhlaender hit into a force play in the 7th inning to score Rich Reese with the only run.

John O'Donoghue pitched a 1-hitter and the Cleveland Indians scored all their runs in the 2nd inning as they shut out the Detroit Tigers 5-0 before 14,765 fans at Tiger Stadium. Duke Sims' 3-run home run was the big blow for Cleveland, while Bill Freehan singled to lead off the bottom of the 2nd inning for the only Detroit hit.

Bert Campaneris singled home 2 runs to help the Kansas City Athletics defeat the Washington Senators 5-1 before 5,568 fans at District of Columbia Stadium, ruining the major league debut of Dick Nold on the mound for the Senators. Mr. Nold started and allowed 5 hits and 3 runs--2 earned--in 5 1/3 innings, with 4 bases on balls, 2 strikeouts, and a wild pitch. Winning pitcher Jim Nash allowed 3 hits and 1 earned run in 6 innings.

Groucho Marx, 86
. U.S. comedian and actor. Julius Henry Marx, with older brothers Chico and Harpo, and younger brother Gummo (later replaced by Zeppo), was successful in vaudeville before breaking into movies with The Cocoanuts (1929), the first of 13 films starring the brothers through 1949. Groucho was the most famous and recognizable of the brothers, with his glasses, greasepaint (later real) moustache and eyebrows, and quick wit. He had a successful solo career, especially as host of the radio (1947-1960) and television (1950-1961) quiz show You Bet Your Life.

Disasters

George McIlraith, 84
. Canadian politician. A Liberal, Mr. McIlraith was the Member of Parliament in the House of Commons for Ottawa West from 1940-1968 and Ottawa Centre from 1968-1972. In the governments of Prime Ministers Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau, he served as Minister of Transport (1963-1964); Minister of Public Works (1965-1968); and Solicitor General (1968-1970), as well as acting minister in several other portfolios. From 1964-1967 Mr. McIlraith was the government's House of Commons leader in charge of parliamentary strategy. Mr. McIlraith was appointed to the Senate by Mr. Trudeau in 1972 and served there until 1983.

Politics and government
At the Republican National Convention at the Astrodome in Houston, U.S. President George Bush and Vice-President Dan Quayle were renominated with no dissenting votes.

Canadian constitutional negotiators announced a plan for a redesigned Senate and House of Commons. The proposed new Senate would have 62 members: 6 from each province and 1 from each territory. The House of Commons would have 42 more members, adding MPs from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec, and guaranteeing Quebec 25% of the representation.

Economics and finance
The United States Commerce Department reported that the merchandise trade deficit had narrowed to $6.59 billion in June.

Paul Osbaldiston’s 33-yard field goal on the last play of regulation time gave the Tiger-Cats the win over the Blue Bombers before 20,932 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Troy Westwood had given the Blue Bombers a 20-18 lead with a 49-yard field goal, his fourth of the game, with 1:48 remaining. Orville Lee rushed 1 yard for a Hamilton touchdown in the 1st quarter, while quarterback Damon Allen rushed 1 yard for the other Hamilton TD late in the 3rd quarter. Winnipeg quarterback Matt Dunigan completed 30 of 46 passes for 333 yards, but the only touchdown he produced came on a 21-yard pass to Eric Streater in the 1st quarter. Winnipeg running back Robert Mimbs, who had led the CFL in rushing yardage in 1990 and 1991, carried 8 times for 25 yards in what turned out to be his last game as a Blue Bomber. After 7 games he had 392 yards—fourth in the league—but was replaced by rookie Michael Richardson.

Baseball
Bret Boone made his major league debut, batting 1 for 4 and driving in a run and scoring 2 while playing second base for the Seattle Mariners in a 10-8 win over the Baltimore Orioles before 41,149 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Mr. Boone thus became the first third-generation major league player, after grandfather Ray Boone and father Bob.

Don Mattingly had 4 hits and 3 runs, and Randy Velarde drove in 4 runs to help the New York Yankees rout the Oakland Athletics 14-3 before 20,568 fans at Yankee Stadium.

Greg Vaughn hit a 3-run home run in the 3rd inning and a 2-run single in the 4th to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-5 before 32,060 fans at County Stadium in Milwaukee.

With 2 out and nobody on base in the bottom of the 8th inning, Steve Sax and Tim Raines hit consecutive singles and Frank Thomas doubled them both home to enable the Chicago White Sox to defeat the Texas Rangers 3-2 before 31,227 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

Gary Disarcina doubled home Von Hayes and Lee Stevens with 2 out in the top of the 9th inning to enable the California Angels to defeat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 before 32,980 fans at Fenway Park in Boston. With 1 out in the inning, Ken Oberkfell singled and Mr. Hayes ran for him and advanced to third base on a double by Mr. Stevens after Chad Curtis struck out for the second out. For Mr. Hayes, it was the 1,495th game of his 12-year major league career.

Tom Glavine allowed 7 hits and 2 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings to improve his 1992 record to 19-3, and drove in 2 runs with a single and sacrifice bunt to help the Atlanta Braves defeat the Montreal Expos 4-2 before 27,235 fans at Olympic Stadium in Montreal. Atlanta shortstop Jeff Blauser opened the scoring with a 2-run home run in the 3rd inning.

Ray Lankford batted 4 for 5 with a home run, double, 3 runs, and 4 runs batted in, and Tracy Woodson was 4 for 5 with a run and 3 RBIs to help the St. Louis Cardinals rout the Houston Astros 12-1 before 32,201 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis.
