Born on this date
Virginia Dare
. Miss Dare was the first child of English parents to be born in the Americas. Her parents, Ananias Dare and Eleanor White, were members of the Roanoke Colony in what is now North Carolina. Several months later, her grandfather and Governor of the colony, John White, returned to England to obtain more supplies. When he returned in 1590, the colonists were gone, and their fate remains a mystery.

John Russell
. Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 1846-1852, 1865-1866. Lord Russell, a Whig for most of his career and then a Liberal, held several cabinet posts in addition to his two terms as Prime Minister. He was known for his support of the expansion of civil liberty, but was criticized for his government's failure to deal with the Irish Potato Famine in the late 1840s. Lord Russell served as Foreign Secretary under Prime Minister Lord Palmerston from 1859-1865, and was named Prime Minister upon Lord Palmerston's death. Lord Russell died on May 28, 1878 at the age of 85.

Caspar Weinberger
. U.S. politician. Mr. Weinberger, a captain in the United States Army during World War II, was U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford from 1973-1975, but was better known for his tenure as Secretary of Defense under President Ronald Reagan from 1981-1987, aiding Mr. Reagan's "peace through strength" policy that helped to win and end the Cold War against the U.S.S.R. He died on March 28, 2006 at the age of 88.

Disasters
A Great Fire in Thessaloniki, Greece destroyed 32% of the city, leaving 70,000 people homeless.

Baseball
The Detroit Tigers released outfielder Jim Landis. Mr. Landis, who was in his 11th major league season, started the season with the Houston Astros, batting .252 with 1 home run and 14 runs batted in in 50 games before being traded to Detroit for relief pitcher Larry Sherry on June 29. Mr. Landis replaced right fielder Al Kaline, out with a broken finger. Mr. Landis batted .208 with 2 homers and 4 RBIs with the Tigers.

Gary Bell pitched a 4-hit complete game victory for the Boston Red Sox as they edged the California Angels 3-2 before 31,027 fans at Fenway Park in Boston. Boston right fielder Tony Conigliaro was hit in the eye by a pitch from Jack Hamilton with 2 out in the bottom of the 4th inning; he missed the rest of the season and all of 1968, and lingering effects shortened his career. California center fielder Jimmie Hall hit solo home runs in the 7th and 9th innings.

Ted Uhlaender led off the top of the 9th with a single and Rich Reese followed with a 2-run home run to enable the Minnesota Twins to edge the New York Yankees 4-3 and get a split in their doubleheader before 22,991 fans at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees won the first game 1-0, with Steve Barber pitching a 6-hit shutout to win the pitchers' duel over Jim Kaat, who pitched an 8-hit complete game. The only one came in the 1st inning when Horace Clarke and Tom Tresh led off with singles and advanced to third and second bases, respectively, on a wild pitch. Mickey Mantle walked to load the bases, and Joe Pepitone followed with a single to score Mr. Clarke, as Mr. Tresh was thrown out at home plate trying to score.

Tim Cullen's 3-run home run off Paul Lindblad with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning gave the Washington Senators a 7-6 win over the Kansas City Athletics before 9,488 fans at District of Columbia Stadium. Kansas City starting pitcher Catfish Hunter hit a 2-run homer as part of a 4-run 5th inning.

Pete Ward's 2-run home run was the big blow of a 3-run 6th inning as the Chicago White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader before 23,754 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Winning pitcher Joel Horlen allowed 7 hits and 1 earned run in 6 innings to improve his 1967 record to 14-3. The Orioles scored 5 runs in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th to win the second game 8-2, with Jim Hardin pitching a 5-hit complete game to win the pitching matchup over Bruce Howard. The start of the doubleheader was delayed two hours by rain.

Mickey Lolich allowed 1 hit in 5 innings and drove in a run with a ground out as the Detroit Tigers shut out the Cleveland Indians 4-0 before 19,461 fans at Tiger Stadium in a game that was called because of rain with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th inning. The Tigers scored all their runs in the 2nd inning off losing pitcher Sam McDowell.

Jim Ellis allowed 8 hits but only 1 run in 6+ innings for the only win of his major league career, winning the pitchers' duel over Larry Jackson as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 before 16,485 fans at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Glenn Beckert drove in 2 runs for the Cubs with a ground out and a single.

World events
Anti-apartheid activist Steven Biko was arrested at a police roadblock in King William's Town, South Africa under the Terrorism Act No. 83 of 1967. He later died from injuries sustained during this arrest, bringing attention to South Africa's apartheid policies.

Crime
Donald Harvey, 35, a hospital orderly from Middletown, Ohio, pled guilty in Hamilton County Court to killing 24 people, 21 of them in 1986 and 1987 at Daniel Drake Memorial Hospital in Cincinnati. Mr. Harvey reportedly confessed to 30 other killings since the 1970s. He said that he poisoned most of his victims. The investigation into the killings began when an autopsy showed that a patient had died of a lethal dose of cyanide. Mr. Harvey was sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison.

Terrorism
American Broadcasting Company reporter Charles Glass, who had been kidnapped in Beirut on June 16, escaped and made contact with Syrians who drove him to Damascus, where he was handed over to U.S. officials. Mr. Glass said that he had slipped out of his chains and locked the sleeping guards inside the apartment in which he was being held.

Medicine
U.S. health officials and MicroGeneSys Inc. announced that the first test on humans of an experimental vaccine for AIDS would begin in October. The company, based in West Haven, Connecticut, developed the vaccine, which had already been tested on animals. 81 volunteers would be recruited in the Washington, D.C. area for the tests.

. U.S. film director. Mr. Sturges, who directed 45 films, was known for action movies with large all-male (or nearly all-male) casts. His movies included Mystery Street (1950); Escape from Fort Bravo (1953); Bad Day at Black Rock (1955); Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957); The Magnificent Seven (1960); The Great Escape (1963); The Satan Bug (1965); Ice Station Zebra (1968); Marooned (1969); and The Eagle has Landed (1976).

Politics and government
Negotiations between the Canadian government of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and provincial governments began in Charlottetown; they eventually resulted in a constitutional agreement known as the Charlottetown Accord, which was subjected to a national referendum two months later.

Abominations
Conditions in two Serbian detention camps were condemned by French cabinet minister Dr. Bernard Kouchner, leader of a delegation inspecting the camps.

Business
Wang Laboratories, Inc., a company that had led the way in developing minicomputers, filed for bankruptcy. The company had been founded by the late An Wang, acknowledged as the inventor of word processors. Analysts said the company had failed to respond effectively to the rising popularity of personal computers.

Larry Bird announced his retirement from the Boston Celtics after 13 seasons because of recurring back problems. Mr. Bird had led the Celtics to NBA championships in 1981, 1984, and 1986, and been named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1984, 1985, and 1986.

Michael Deaver, 69
. U.S. political adviser. Mr. Deaver was White House Deputy Chief of Staff under President Ronald Reagan from 1981-1985. He was convicted of perjury in 1987 for testimony that he had submitted to Congress regarding his lobbying activities, and was sentenced to probation, a fine, and public service. Mr. Deaver died of pancreatic cancer.

The Roughriders trailed the Eskimos 32-24 late in the 3rd quarter before 28,800 fans at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, but Luca Congi kicked a field goal late in the 3rd quarter and a field goal and a single in the 4th quarter before quarterback Kerry Joseph rushed 2 yards for a touchdown and Wes Cates rushed 4 yards for a 2-point convert with 5:06 remaining in the 4th quarter to give the Roughriders the win. Mr. Joseph passed for 343 yards and 2 touchdowns to D.J. Flick, and handed off to Chris Szarka for another TD. Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray completed 25 of 35 passes for 361 yards and a touchdown to T.J. Acree, while backup quarterback Steven Jyles rushed for 2 short touchdowns and Jason Goss returned an interception 46 yards in the 3rd quarter for the other Edmonton TD.
