Hamilton (4-1-1) 16 @ Edmonton (3-5) 15

Don Sutherin’s 18-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining in the game gave the Tiger-Cats the win in their first regular season game at Clarke Stadium before a crowd of 15,667. Bernie Faloney, playing his first regular season game in Edmonton since 1954, started at quarterback for the Tiger-Cats, but left with a season-ending knee injury in the 1st quarter. His replacement, Frank Cosentino, scored Hamilton's only offensive touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Defensive back Grant McKee scored the other Hamilton touchdown in the 3rd quarter when he picked up an errant lateral by Edmonton running back Mike Lashuk and returned it 83 yards. Edmonton touchdowns came on passes from Don Getty to Tommy-Joe Coffey (46 yards in the 1st quarter) and Bill McKenny (10 yards in the 2nd quarter). Johnny Bright led the Eskimos’ rushing attack with 19 carries for 94 yards, while Mr. Cosentino led the Tiger-Cats with 87 yards on 8 carries, in addition to completing 11 of 18 passes for 187 yards. The Eskimos attempted to tie the game in the final seconds when Mr. Getty completed a pass to Mr. Lashuk for a first down. On the last play, Vic Chapman, who had scored a single earlier in the game on a 75-yard punt, tried for another, but his kick came down at the Hamilton 2-yard line.

Defense
The United States Senate voted 88-2 to approve the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) agreement, negotiated during U.S. President Richard Nixon’s visit to Moscow in May, freezing their offensive nuclear missiles at current levels for five years. The five-year agreement gave the Soviets about 1,618 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), including 300 big SS-9s, compared to 1,054 ICBMs in the United States, which had more multiple warhead missiles and a larger fleet of long-range bombers. The pact included a hotly-debated amendment by Senator Henry Jackson (Democrat—Washington) stipulating that any such accord in the future should not limit the U.S.A. “to levels of intercontinental strategic forces inferior to the limits provided for the Soviet Union.”

The Toronto Argonauts fired head coach Adam Rita, the day after an embarrassing 31-0 loss at home against the Calgary Stampeders had dropped the team’s record to 3 wins and 7 losses. Mr. Rita, who had led the Argonauts to a 13-5 record and the Grey Cup championship in 1991, became the first head coach to be fired during the season following a Grey Cup championship. Assistant coach Dennis Meyer was named as his successor. It was also an embarrassing moment for Bryan Hall of CJCA in Edmonton. It was obvious that his 12:15 P.M. sportscast had been taped beforehand, because he said that Mr. Rita might be fired. Meanwhile, CHQT’s lunchtime sportscast, broadcast live, had reported that Mr. Rita had already been fired.
