William McGonagall, 77. U.K. poet. Mr. McGonagall, who trained as a weaver, wrote about 200 poems, which are regarded as among the worst in the history of the English language. His poems included The Tay Bridge Disaster (1879) and The Famous Tay Whale (1884).

John Cobb, 52. U.K. auto racing and speedboat driver. Mr. Cobb set the world land speed record in 1938, 1939, and 1947. He was killed in Loch Ness in Scotland when an unexpected wake destroyed his boat while he was trying to break the world water speed record.

This was the first episode of Mr. Gleason's new variety show. Art Carney returned to play Ed Norton in the first Honeymooners' skit in five years. Immediately preceding the Honeymooners' skit, which closed the show, was a musical number with the Newton Brothers, with Wayne Newton singing and playing the banjo. Space
Canada’s first satellite, Alouette 1, was launched from Pacific Missile Range at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Its mission was to be a topside ionosphere sounder. Alouette 1 was the first satellite to be constructed in a country other than the U.S.S.R. or U.S.A.

Russ Jackson rushed for touchdowns of 7 and 14 yards, passed 22 yards to Len Chandler for another TD, and handed off to Millard Flemming for a 2-yard run for the other touchdown as the Rough Riders blanked the Tiger-Cats before 17,124 fans at Lansdowne Park. Ernie White rushed 15 times for 93 yards for Ottawa and caught 2 passes for 90.

Bob Ptacek completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Ray Purdin late in the 4th quarter to give the Roughriders their win over the Argonauts before 11,900 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. The Roughriders trailed 11-1 early in the 4th quarter, but came back with a 2-yard touchdown run by Bill Gray and a 26-yard TD pass from Mr. Ptacek to Ferd Burket. Dick Shatto and Aubrey Linne scored touchdowns for Toronto. Mr. Ptacek completed 16 of 22 passes for 327 yards. Gerry McDougall led the Argonauts' rushing attack with 146 yards, while Mr. Shatto carried 10 rimes for 56 yards and a touchdown and caught 5 passes for 69.

Joe Kapp completed 13 of 22 passes for 427 yards and 6 touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown of his own as the Lions beat the Eskimos before 18,322 fans at Clarke Stadium. Mack Burton and Tom Larscheid each caught 2 touchdown passes, with Willie Fleming and Jim Carphin catching 1 each. Mr. Burton, perhaps the CFL's outstanding rookie, snapped an Achilles tendon and was lost for the rest of the season. Jim Walden, Bobby Walden, and Tony Kehrer scored Edmonton touchdowns. Ted Tully, replacing the injured Tommy-Joe Coffey as the Eskimos’ kicker, added 2 converts and a field goal, and Bobby Walden punted for a single. It was Rollie Miles Night at Clarke Stadium, as the Eskimos honoured one of their greatest players, who had recorded an outstanding 11-year career from 1951-1961.

Richard Crooks, 72. U.S. opera singer. Mr. Crooks, a tenor, starred with the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the 1930s and 1940s, and hosted The Voice of Firestone (originally known as The Firestone Hour) radio program on NBC from 1928-1945.

Diplomacy
Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka and Chinese Premier Chou En-lai signed an accord to end the technical state of war that had existed between the countries since 1937, and renewed diplomatic relations. The agreement ended Mr. Tanaka’s five-day visit to Peking, where he also called on Chairman Mao Tse-tung in the Forbidden City. In a joint statement, Mr. Tanaka accepted the Chinese position that “Taiwan is an inalienable part” of the People’s Republic of China. After notifying Nationalist China of its new policy that day, Japan severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Tom Seaver pitched a 2-hitter and the New York Mets scored a run in the 9th inning off Nelson Briles as the Mets edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 to give Mr. Seaver his 20th win of the season.

Monty Stratton, 70. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Stratton pitched with the Chicago White Sox from 1934-1938, compiling a record of 36 wins and 23 losses. He was 15-5 with an earned run average of 2.40 in 1937 and was named to American League all-star team. Mr. Stratton was 15-9 in 1938, but in November, he fell while hunting and accidentally shot himself in the right leg, which had to be amputated. After a couple of years as a coach with the White Sox, he attempted a comeback using an artificial leg. In 1946 Mr. Stratton pitched for the Sherman Twins of the class C East Texas League, compiling a record of 18-8. Hollywood decided to make a movie about him, and Mr. Stratton reduced his pitching workload in order to assist the film project. The Stratton Story, starring James Stewart, was released in 1949, and won the Academy Award for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story.

Henry Ford II, 70. U.S. automobile executive. Mr. Ford, the grandson of Henry Ford and son of Edsel Ford, was president of the Ford Motor Company from 1945-1960 and chairman and chief executive officer from 1960-1979. He died 25 days after his 70th birthday.

Baseball
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 before 34,314 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, while the Detroit Tigers whipped the Baltimore Orioles 10-1 before 16,882 fans at Tiger Stadium, leaving the Blue Jays 1 1/2 games ahead of the Tigers in the race for the American League East Division pennant. The Blue Jays had 4 games remaining, the Tigers 5.

Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees set a major league record with his 6th grand slam of the season--the last one off Bruce Hurst--as the Yankees blanked the Boston Red Sox 6-0 before 20,204 fans at Yankee Stadium. Mr. Mattingly's homer opened the scoring in a 5-run 3rd inning. Charles Hudson pitched a 4-hit shutout to improve his 1987 record to 11-6.

Floyd Bannister allowed 4 hits in 7 innings to improve his record for the season to 15-11, winning the pitchers' duel over Mike Witt, as the Chicago White Sox edged the California Angels 1-0 before 7,554 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Mr. Witt allowed 7 hits in pitching a complete game and falling to 16-13, with the only run scoring in the 5th inning when Ken Williams singled with 2 out, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Steve Lyons.

Don Carman pitched a 1-hitter, facing just 1 batter over the minimum, to improve his 1987 record to 13-11 as he led the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-0 win over the New York Mets before 30,799 fans at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Mookie Wilson's infield single leading off the 4th inning was the only blemish on Mr. Carman's performance.

Buddy Bell singled home Paul O'Neill with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Cincinnati Reds a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves before 8,725 fans at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.

Joe Magrane pitched a 3-hitter and Greg Mathews allowed 3 hits and no runs in 6 innings to get the win as the St. Louis Cardinals swept a doubleheader from the Montreal Expos 1-0 and 3-0 before 48,142 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis, leaving the third-place Expos 5 games behind the National League East Division-leading Cardinals with 5 games remaining for both teams.

Vice-President Itamar Franco would become acting President, and would fill Mr. Collor’s term, due to expire in 1985, if Mr. Collor were convicted.

Anthony Calvillo completed 23 of 32 passes for 287 yards and touchdowns to Jeremaine Copeland and Ben Cahoon as the Alouettes routed the Argonauts before a sellout crowd of 20,002 at Molson Stadium. Thomas Haskins rushed 13 times for 87 yards and another Montreal touchdown, and caught 7 passes for 59 yards. Mark Washington scored the game’s final TD on a 48-yard interception return.

Paul Osbaldiston missed a 43-yard field goal attempt with 14 seconds left in regulation time, and the resulting single point left the Tiger-Cats 1 point short of the Eskimos before 16,054 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Jason Tucker of the Eskimos caught 5 passes for 88 yards and 3 touchdowns, the first from starting quarterback Ricky Ray and the others from backup quarterback Jason Maas. Edmonton defensive back Jerome Peterson scored his only CFL touchdown on a 50-yard interception return in the 1st quarter as the Eskimos built a 17-0 lead. The Tiger-Cats responded with 25 straight points in the 2nd quarter, including touchdown passes by Danny McManus to Darren Flutie, Andrew Grigg, and Tony Akins. Jarret Smith scored the other Hamilton touchdown on a 1-yard rush with 5:40 remaining in regulation time. Edmonton’s John Avery led all rushers with 18 carries for 150 yards, while Mr. Grigg led all receivers with 113 yards on 5 receptions. It was the first CFL game for Edmonton’s Randy Chevrier, a backup defensive tackle and long snapper. The win clinched a playoff spot for the Eskimos for the 31st consecutive season.



Baseball
The Chicago Cubs ended the season by firing manager Bruce Kimm, making the announcement, at Mr. Kimm's request, before the game, in which the Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3. The Cubs became the first modern major league team to lead the league in strikeouts by pitchers (1,333) and batters (1,269) in the same season.
