Walter Scott, 61
. U.K. writer. Sir Walter, a native of Edinburgh, was a judge and legal administrator by profession, and wrote poetry and two volumes of the History of Scotland (1829-1830), but was best known for historical novels such as Rob Roy (1817) and Ivanhoe (1819). He died of a stroke, after a period of failing health.

Johnny Pont rushed for 1 touchdown and caught a pass for another as Balmy Beach defeated the Redskins before 2,600 fans on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Maple Leaf Stadium. Balmy Beach coach and quarterback Gerry Tuttle completed just 8 of 20 passes, but 3 of his completions went for touchdowns. In addition to the TD pass to Mr. Pont, Mr. Tuttle completed touchdown passes to Doug Woolley and Fred Smale. Al Dekdebrun, who had quarterbacked the Toronto Argonauts to the Grey Cup championship two years earlier, split the Redskins' quarterbacking with Glen Dawson. Mr. Dekdebrun moved to halfback when Mr. Dawson took over as quarterback, and took a handoff from Mr. Dawson for the first Brantford touchdown. Bill Brady rushed 1 yard for the other Redskin touchdown late in the game. Toronto halfback Ross McKelvey broke his ankle in the 1st quarter.

Joe Black pitched a 3-hitter to win his first major league start as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Boston Braves 8-2 in what turned out to be the Braves' last game in Boston, and the last major league game at Braves Field. Jim Wilson took the loss for the Braves. Brooklyn catcher Roy Campanella hit the last home run at Braves Field. 8,822 attended the game, the Braves' second-largest home crowd of the season.

Johnny Riggins (26-13-1) knocked out Alejandro Lavorante (19-5) in the 6th round of a heavyweight bout at Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. Mr. Lavorante, who had been taken out of the ring on a stretcher after being stopped in the 10th round by Archie Moore on March 30 and then had been knocked out by Cassius Clay in 5 rounds on July 20, went into a coma, from which he did not recover. The native of Argentina died on April 1, 1964 at the age of 27. Mr. Riggins had just 2 more fights, both of which he lost.

Eagle Day completed 20 of 28 passes for 330 yards and touchdowns of 14 and 56 yards to Jim Dillard as the Stampeders came back from a 23-6 deficit to defeat the Rough Riders before a Lansdowne Park crowd of 16,265. Lovell Coleman rushed for 2 Calgary touchdowns and Ed Buchanan rushed for the other Stampeder major. Russ Jackson, Dave Thelen, Ernie White, and Ron Stewart scored Ottawa touchdowns. Moe Racine added 2 converts and 2 field goals.

Sven Andersson, 77
. Swedish politician. Mr. Andersson, a member of the Social Democratic Party, was a member of Gothenburg City Council (1939-1940), and was first elected to Parliament in 1941. He was Minister of Communications (1951-1957); Minister of Defence (1957-1973); and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1973-1976), and was known as a strong anti-Communist and defense hawk.

An American helicopter gunship fired on and hit an Iranian ship laying mines in the Persian Gulf. 3 Iranian sailors were killed and 26 taken prisoner. The captives were returned to Iranian control five days later.

The Eskimos overcame a 15-1 1st-quarter deficit to defeat the Roughriders before 44,480 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. John Avery rushed 22 times for 157 yards and caught 4 passes for 52 yards and a touchdown to lead the Edmonton attack. In addition to the touchdown pass to Mr. Avery, Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray threw a touchdown pass to Terry Vaughn and rushed for a touchdown of his own. Chris Szarka rushed 6 yards for the first Saskatchewan touchdown and linebacker K.D. Williams scored the second on a 19-yard fumble return. The Eskimos were leading 28-18 when Saskatchewan quarterback Nealon Greene and receiver Quincy Jackson, who had both been Eskimos a year earlier, connected for an 11-yard TD with 3:10 remaining in regulation time. Sean Fleming kicked a 14-yard field goal with 2:09 remaining to put the Eskimos ahead by 6 points, but Mr. Greene marched the Roughriders into position to try for a game-winning touchdown in the final seconds, only to be sacked on 2 consecutive plays. The Eskimos sacked Mr. Greene 6 times in the game, while Mr. Ray wasn’t sacked once. Henry “Gizmo” Williams, a legendary kick returner from 1986-1988 and 1990-2000, was added to the Eskimos’ Wall of Honour in a ceremony at halftime.
