Bruce Smith, Rick Shaw, and Al Brenner intercepted passes from former teammate Wally Gabler in the 4th quarter as the Tiger-Cats came from behind to beat the Argonauts before the usual capacity crowd of 33,135 at CNE Stadium. Mr. Smith’s interception was immediately followed by a 6-yard rush by Dave Fleming for the winning touchdown. Mr. Fleming also scored on a 1-yard rush in the 3rd quarter, set up by a 44-yard run by quarterback Chuck Ealey. Tight end Tony Gabriel scored a Hamilton touchdown when he recovered a fumble by punt returner Elmars Sprogis in the Toronto end zone in the 2nd quarter. The Argonauts jumped to an 11-0 lead after 1 quarter on a 43-yard field goal by Ivan MacMillan—set up by a 52-yard completion from Mr. Gabler to Leon McQuay--, a single by Zenon Andrusyshyn, and a 62-yard touchdown pass from Mr. Gabler to Eric Allen. The Argonauts scored their other touchdown in the 3rd quarter when Mr. Gabler threw to Mr. Allen for 57 yards to the Hamilton 18-yard line and then to Mr. McQuay for 15 yards and the touchdown. The Tiger-Cats outrushed the Argonauts 242 yards to 88. Mr. Ealey rushed 10 times for 88 yards; Mr. Fleming carried 20 times for 88; and Dave Buchanan gained 55 on 16 carries. Mr. McQuay led the Argonauts with 13 carries for 79 yards. Mr. Gabler completed just 11 of 32 passes, but for 251 yards. Mr. Ealey completed 4 of 12 for 45 yards and an interception.

Tom Wilkinson threw touchdown passes to George McGowan and Roy Bell and Dave Walker blocked a punt and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown before 22,921 fans at Clarke Stadium as the Eskimos beat the Stampeders for the second straight game. Veteran Edmonton middle linebacker Jerry Griffin suffered a season-ending knee injury, and his replacement, rookie Therman Couch, intercepted 2 passes, returning them for a total of 41 yards. The Stampeders, who trailed 20-6 after 3 quarters, scored 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter. Fritz Seyferth, playing his first CFL game, rushed 2 yards for a touchdown with 12:21 remaining in the game. Mr. Bell’s converted touchdown gave the Eskimos a 27-13 lead with 3:54 remaining, but Calgary quarterback Jim Lindsey, who had replaced starter Jerry Keeling earlier in the game, marched his team downfield and connected with rookie receiver Gary Kerr for a 5-yard touchdown with 1:04 remaining. For Mr. Bell, it was also his first CFL game. Another player making his CFL debut was Calgary guard Marion Latimore, replacing the departed John Atamian. It was the only appearance in an Edmonton uniform for former British Columbia Lions’ punter Ken Phillips; he also suffered a knee injury and never played again. The game was the third and last CFL game for Edmonton defensive end Jerry Shay, and the only CFL game for Grant Cvitanich, who played defensive end for the Stampeders.

NFL
Gale Sayers, one of the most exciting players in NFL history, announced his retirement after seven seasons as a running back and kick returner with the Chicago Bears. The announcement came the day after he had fumbled twice in three carries during the Bears' 33-14 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in a pre-season game at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis. Mr. Sayers scored 22 touchdowns in his rookie year, an NFL record for a single season. A serious injury to his right knee interrupted Mr. Sayers' 1968 season, but he came back to win the league rushing title in 1969. An injury to his left knee during a pre-season game in 1970 limited his playing time for that season and 1971, and he never regained his old form. Gale Sayers was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1977.
