Giuseppe Verdi. Italian composer. Mr. Verdi, whose name translates into English as "Joe Green," was one of the most prominent opera composers in the 19th century. His operas included Rigoletto (1851); La Traviata (1853); Aida (1871); Otello (1887); and Falstaff (1893). Mr. Verdi died on January 27, 1901 at the age of 87.

Claude Simon. Madagascar-born French author. Mr. Simon's novels often dealt with war and with family history legends. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1985. Mr. Simon died on July 6, 2005 at the age of 91.

Adolphus Busch, 74. German-born U.S. brewer. Mr. Busch co-founded the Anheuser-Busch brewery in St. Louis with his father-in-law, Eberhard Anheuser.
Katsura Taro, 65. Prime Minister of Japan, 1901-1906; 1908-1911; 1912-1913. Mr. Taro was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army. His last time in office as prime minister ended after just two months amid suspicion that there was a plot by the generals to overthrow the constitution. He resigned after losing a non-confidence motion, and died of stomach cancer eight months later.

Center fielder Casey Stengel hit an inside-the park home run with 2 out in the top of the 9th for the winning run before 55,307 fans in the first World Series game ever played at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees took a 3-0 lead after 2 innings against starting pitcher Mule Watson. Rosy Ryan relieved Mr. Watson to begin the 3rd inning and pitched the rest of the game to get the win. The Giants rallied for 4 runs in the top of the 3rd inning to take a 4-3 lead; Yankees' starting pitcher Waite Hoyt was relieved with 1 out in the 3rd by Bullet Joe Bush, who pitched the rest of the game. The Yankees tied the game with a run in the 7th. Mr. Bush was ejected for arguing with umpire Hank O'Day after grounding out for the first out in the bottom of the 9th.

A United Airlines Boeing 247 propliner bound from Newark, New Jersey to Oakland, California, crashed near Chesterton, Indiana, with the loss of all four passengers and three crew members. The crash was caused by the explosion of a bomb that had been brought on board by one of the passengers.

Soviet forces in Ukraine strengthened their bridgeheads on the west bank of the Dnieper River in the face of heavy German counterattacks. Allied forces punched a new salient into the front near the centre of Italy by taking Pontelandolfo, 22 miles northwest of Benevento. Yugoslavian partisans attacked Trieste, Italy, forcing the Germans back into the city's centre.

In the Double Tenth Massacre during Operation Jaywick, 57 innocent civilians in Singapore were arrested and tortured--15 fatally--by the Kempeitai (Japanese Military Police) on suspicion of involvement in a raid on Singapore Harbour resulting in the sinking of seven Japanese ships.

Jean Cocteau, 74. French writer and film director. Mr. Cocteau was best known for his novel Les Enfants Terribles (1929), and for films such as The Blood of a Poet (1930); Beauty and the Beast (1946); Les Parents terribles (1948); and Orpheus (1950). He died of a heart attack, reportedly the result of hearing of the death of his friend Edith Piaf hours earlier.
Edith Piaf, 47. French singer. Miss Piaf was internationally famous for singing such ballads as La Vie en rose (1946); Hymne à l'amour (1949); and Non, je ne regrette rien (1960). She died of liver cancer after years of heavy drinking.

Ralph Richardson, 80. U.K. actor. Sir Ralph was one of Britain's most famous stage actors of the 20th century. His movies included The Four Feathers (1939); The Fallen Idol (1948); The Sound Barrier (1952); Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962); and Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984). He often acted with his friend John Gielgud, and the two starred in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on radio in 1954-1955, with Mr. Gielgud as Sherlock Holmes and Mr. Richardson as Dr. Watson.

All five members of a commission appointed by Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos to investigate the August 21 assassination of political opposition leader Benigno Aquino resigned, and the member of parliament whom Mr. Marcos had named as the second chairman of the commission turned down the appointment. The commissioners said they were resigning because of widespread doubts as to their impartiality.

John Hufnagel, playing his first game at quarterback for the Blue Bombers since being acquired six days earlier with slotback Jerome Erdman in a trade with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for quarterback Nickie Hall and wide receiver Nate Johnson, completed 21 of 35 passes for 342 yards and touchdowns of 75 and 42 yards to Jeff Boyd, but allowed 2 interceptions by Kerry Parker and another by Melvin Byrd, fumbled twice, and was sacked for a safety touch in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Boyd caught 6 passes for 179 yards. Winnipeg's Willard Reaves led all rushers with 15 carries for 61 yards. B.C.'s Larry Jones rushed 6 times for 17 yards, caught 2 passes for 12 yards, and returned 1 kickoff for 15 yards in his 8th and last CFL game. Mr. Hufnagel became the sixth quarterback to start a game for the Blue Bombers in 1983, after Mark Jackson, Nickie Hall, Dieter Brock, Norman Gibbs, and Tom Clements.
