Arthur Phillip, 75. U.K. military officer and politician. Mr. Phillip, an admiral in the Royal Navy, was the first Governor of the penal colony of New South Wales from 1788-1795. He died on August 31, 1814 at the age of 75.

Louis Cyr. Canadian strongman. Born Cyprien-Noé Cyr in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, Quebec, Mr. Cyr performed feats that earned him a reputation as the world's strongest man, and maybe the strongest man who ever lived. His accomplishments included lifting a 534-pound weight with one finger; lifting 18 men on a platform, totalling 4,337 pounds; and resisting the pull of four draught horses (two in each hand). Mr. Cyr died of Bright's disease on November 10, 1912 at the age of 49.

Joe Simon. U.S. author and illustrator. Mr. Simon created or co-created many comic book characters in the 1930s and '40s. He and partner Jack Kirby created Captain America in 1940; they also created romance comics, and were pioneers in horror comics. Mr. Simon founded the satirical magazine Sick in 1960 and edited it for almost a decade. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1999, and died on December 14, 2011 at the age of 98.

Yugoslavian partisans reported that they were within 23 miles of Belgrade and were in the suburbs of the Croatian capital of Zagreb. Australian Prime Minister John Curtin revealed that the Allied flier beheaded by Japanese forces in New Guinea was an Australian. Mr. Curtin said that such atrocities were being examined "with a view of full retribution against responsible persons." The deceased was later revealed to be Royal Australian Air Force Flight Lieutenant Bill Newton, 23, who was still listed as missing when he was awarded the Victoria Cross, but who had in fact been executed on March 29, 1943.

Pope John Paul II addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, but was interrupted by Rev. Ian Paisley, MEP from Northern Ireland, who shouted, "I renounce you as Christ's enemy and antichrist, with all your false doctrine..." Mr. Paisley was physically attacked and ejected from the House, despite the fact that according to the rules of the Parliament, he had every right to protest as he did and Lord Plumb, President of the European Parliament, had no right to silence him.

The game was interrupted for 13 minutes by a brawl in the bottom of the 4th inning when Boston's Manny Ramirez objected to an inside pitch and started toward Mr. Clemens, and the benches emptied. New York bench coach Don Zimmer, 72, charged toward Mr. Martinez and the Boston ace grabbed him and threw him to the ground. Another fight occurred in the 9th inning when New York relief pitcher Jeff Nelson scuffled with a groundskeeper in the bullpen. New York shortstop Derek Jeter hit the game's only home run; Mariano Rivera earned the save for the Yankees.
